Atomic Mass Show Off All Their Upcoming Marvel Heroes
August 13, 2019 by brennon
Atomic Mass Games recently started updating their Marvel: Crisis Protocol gallery showing off lots of the heroes in more detail that you'll be getting in the core set and the first two character expansions. So, without further ado, it seems apt to dive in and just start showing them off!
Captain America
Black Widow
Captain Marvel
Iron Man
Spider-Man
I really like the choices that they've made for the heroes in Crisis Protocol. We have some fan favourites in there like Captain America and Spider-Man alongside some nice picks to build up the diverse roster with Captain Marvel and Black Widow.
As well as bringing us a nice diverse mix of characters we're also seeing a neat nudge towards building an Avengers affiliated squad of heroes. Captain America, Black Widow and Iron Man immediately mean you should be able to run the affiliation and get the extra bonus from Captain America.
Villains!
On the villain's side, we have a much more disparate array of character options. Now, of course, you can mix and match between heroes and villains but I think a lot of people are going to try and stick to notable teams, at least in the beginning.
Ultron
Red Skull
Doctor Octopus
Crossbones
Baron Zemo
There is a nice mix of villains here and it feels like it's a good selection which works against specific characters on the hero side; Ultron versus Iron Man, Doctor Octopus versus Spider-Man for example.
When we saw the images of the miniatures from Gen Con there was some grumbling that the detail wasn't as nice when compared to the old Knight Models range but I honestly think these are some great looking models. A lot of detail has been worked into the plastic kits and it will be cool to see just how easy they are to assemble.
Expansions
The first two character expansions for the game have already been previewed and it includes Hulk...
...and M.O.D.O.K.
M.O.D.O.K seems like an interesting option for them to bring into the mix but I assume he's there to show that they have a lot to explore when it comes to delving into the comic books. I think it would have been nice to see another of Spider-Man's enemies so you can start building up the Sinister Six. Perhaps they could have included Rhino if they wanted another big hero in the mix?
The release for the game is set to be Fall this year (or Autumn for many of us) and there are plenty of stores which are already taking pre-orders.
Make sure to check out my preview of the rules HERE.
Which heroes and villains would you like to see in the mix?

I really don’t understand why they would go 40mm. It will be the definite downfall of this project.
I think you underestimate the power of Marvel. Also, most 35mm scenery is still going to work for this, it won’t look too far out proportion-wise.
have you seen the pricing Shred? That was what scared me off rather than scale.
Yeah, should at most be an 80 Dollar box. Add to that it will require their specialized terrain (due to size and rules).
@brennon Who has 35mm scenery? Another weird scale. 28-32mm is usual. 6, 10, 15, 20 and 54mm all have at least decent scenery support. Conquest with its weird scale at least doesn’t need in-scale scenery like buildings, this one heavily relies on it.
I guess they can survive a little bit on mini sales for collectors, like Knight Miniatures, and that’s it. Marvel or DC alone doesn’t have enough pull.
Knight Models is 35mm and there is terrain for that from all sorts of companies… https://www.multiversegamingterrain.com/dark-city-modernpulpsuperhero-c-6_4.html https://www.knightsofdice.com/product-category/sentry-city-pulp/ Plus, this blog has links to lots of other storefronts… http://pressganger.blogspot.com/2014/11/useful-35mm-dc-marvel-and-batman-game.html I think if they manage to make the gameplay feel dynamic enough and focused on heroes feeling awesome, people will be happy to get stuck into the game. Yes, the pricing is a bit rough right out of the gate but with the help of an FLGS, you will get a cut off that at least. You don’t have to fight in cities either. You could easily go out and fight in… Read more »
Or, just make your own terrain of course.
Or 3D print it 🙂 Many times you can simply magnify the model to enlarge it.
I would love to see someone make or offer as a kit a break away building. Some character throws another character at a building and you remove a chunk from the building.
oh no Shred, that’s a $100 starter, although you may find online retailers knocking some off. Other high points include, $25 for Starlord by himself, $35 for the Hulk, $40 for the twin pack sets like Rocket and Groot.
The starter box does seem to have some terrain in it. Maybe enough for a small kitchen table sized skirmish.
And seem willing enough to pay $30 or $35 for a single 40K character. Some people even make a whole weekend of it. 😉 😛 😉
don’t forget the ‘NYC terrain pack’ … which duplicates the core set ‘terrain’ (dumpsters, traffic light, ‘news stands’, etc.).
Oof, GW prices. The need for new terrain bits. All that from a company that isn’t even established. Not even GW was able to pull that off back in the day with Inquisitor.
@brennon (Almost) Nobody plays that Knight game, and I doubt the terrain would look good with 40mm minis. You have now narrowed your market share down to people who like Marvel heroes, are willing to fork over premium money for non-established manufacturers and who are willing to build or buy a new set of terrain.
I wish them best of luck.
I’ve gotta agreed with Shredhead, this would be so tempting to dip into if it were not for the terrain. I think what is needed is some cheap “get you started” card terrain in the box like Infinity and Batman have.
’cause they can and don’t want you to use miniatures from others companies ‘by accident’ …
At 54mm they’d be compatible with the mini toy figure range that’s out there for example.
/cynical me
Definitely agree that the size is odd, but it kind of makes sense for a game where you’re going to have a really low model count.
Those look really good.
I’ll have to reserve judgement until I see an actual figure: I was totally disappointed with the initial metal figures from Knight Games when I saw them in the blisters. They looked great painted in the photos but I found them rather 2 dimensional and the weapons were rather fiddly in “person”. And with the new trend of CAD sculpting cramming an over-abundance of details onto 28-35 mm figures, making them almost too-complicated to paint well, maybe 40 mm will help to relieve some of the “over-crowding”. And make them much more visible, more heroic on a smaller playing field.… Read more »
I will be so buying this. I figure I buy GW stuff so the prices to scare me. The scale…sure it is a little weird but I don’t care. I think the models will look great at that scale.
I wonder how they’re going to nerf Captain Marvel ’cause a character that can destoy spaceships isn’t exactly what I’d call “fun” in a skirmish game.
Same applies to the Hulk … although he’s got a weak form that he can revert to (which I do hope is part of the game).
btw : at those prices they’d better be painted to a professional standard …
Are these hard plastic?
Yes hard plastic
Those are some of the most uninspired Super Hero Poses I have seen in quite a while. How can anyone get this huge license and come up with this many lame poses. Most of them just differentiate between what leg or arm is coming forward. Very disappointing! 🙁
Nope, afraid not, massive Marvel fan and my kids love it, thought I might run a few games of this with them and get them painting but not at that price point for ten models I’m afraid. Just got Warcry and my kids are enjoying it so that’ll do me for skirmish for a while I reckon, won’t completely break the bank keeping up with it either.
I saw these at GenCon and they are damn sexy. A group of us were going nuts at the display. Photos do not do them justice. These are some amazing sculpts.
On a side note, some people complained about Star Wars Legion’s bigger scale and price and look how overstated those complaints are now. Same story here.
I pre-ordered the core for around $75 at my LGS along with the other packs. Still cheaper than when I bought my SW Legion core for. This game will do just fine.
great figures m.o.d.o.k. is he the guy out of the turtles?
no that was krang, he was in a dudes stomach
Lol that’s right.
i thought exactly the same thing on first look! haha
If it was 28/32mm then I’d be all in but at this scale it’s a big no.
(Keep my collection in that range so I can do cross overs and keep some of the same terrain)
Personally, I think the scale is fine. I understand the need to be different as they want people using their range and not the range of the other two Marvel miniatures (Knight Models and HeroClix). Ultimately, I can’t help but wonder two things though: 1.) How are the releases going to be done to balance variety and cost? If they spread them out too much, that will make it easier for people to justify the prices but make games become stale and boring with the same figures. If they release a bunch in succession, then the games will have a… Read more »
I’m not worried about the scale either. This company is related to Asmodee and FFG so hopefully they have the manufacture/delivery figured out. I think the license Knight Models had was from prior to Disney purchasing Marvel. Disney just didn’t renew the license as I think that KM was getting too good a deal for their IP. The fact that KM didn’t do much if anything with that IP is the real shame. I also wouldn’t worry about HeroClix. If it’s making money I think Disney is happy. It is also sufficiently different as both a hobby and game that… Read more »
I haven’t actively played/bought into HeroClix in well over a year, but it’d a game I have some friends that are still big into it (if only for a few characters). One of them pointed out there shouldn’t be any problems since one is a collectible miniatures game and this one is not. Good point about Knight Models, though I had a conspiracy for the longest time it was because Disney wanted all of their miniature games all under one roof (like Star Wars is). I figured we’d have gotten an Imperial Assault style game but based more around S.H.I.E.L.D… Read more »
I haven’t seen FFG partner with a smaller company, but FFG’s treatment of game lines is to release a few products then drop the line entirely if it doesn’t sell, leaving customers behind. They just did this with Runewars, and did this with Battelore. Smaller companies seem to support their game lines longer.
My paint and game queues are already too long, so I’m in no hurry to buy. I’ll let you guys do the work. (:
