Hobby Lab: Winterdale Watchtower 10, Painting and Fitting the Door

We now turn our attention to the ground floor door of the tower. This will be pretty simple but it will give us a functional door which is always a wonderful addition to any piece of terrain.
We start by painting the metal parts of the door with Army Painter Greedy Gold. Being careful not to let the paint go in areas we don't want it to. However, at this stage, if that happens, we can tidy it up again with Army Painter Leather Brown.
We then give the door a heavy wash of Army Painter Dark Tone. This will help shade the wood grain and the metal parts. Painting the door in this manner will give us a different looking kind of wood compared to the structural timber used elsewhere in the tower.
The final step for the door itself, is to highlight the gold with Flames of War colour Shell Brass. This is brighter than Greedy Gold and will add a little glimmer to the metallic parts to give them a more eye-catching appearance.
One particular joy about the tower is that the door hinge on the tower itself is exactly the same diameter of a cocktail stick! Yes this does sound a little odd, however, it is good because the hinge on the door has a larger diameter. This means that we have some room for error if our initial cleanup step has missed something that might otherwise hinder the doors movement.
Now we can fit the door and make sure it all works before moving on. And the fit is good, as is the motion of the door.
Next we take some clippers or a craft knife and remove the excess cocktail stick, ensuring that it is as flush to the top and bottom of the tower segment.
To save us the annoyance of accidental gluing, we use a filler putty to steal the top and bottom of the cocktail stick. In this case we are using Green Stuff as it cures solid and can be sanded if needed.
The end result is smooth, and with a little bit of painting at a later stage, will be practically invisible.
With the door fitted, we can see how the tower is taking shape and how far we have come along with the project.
