There was also nine panzer divisions and one panzergrenadier division with over 1,400 tanks and self propelled guns based at Panzer Group West. However, these resources were not properly utilised, with Rommel only being given command of three panzer divisions, with only the 21st Panzer being located within striking distance of the Normandy beaches.

The rest of the divisions were held elsewhere and wouldn't have been able to react to the invasion as fast as needed. The other tank divisions, 2nd and 116th Panzer, were stationed north of the Seine, whilst the 2nd SS, 9th and 11th were stationed in the south of France. The other remaining divisions, 17th SS Panzergrenadier and Panzer Lehr and the 1st and 12th SS stayed with Panzer Group West. They could not be moved without Hitler’s express permission, further hampering the defence capabilities of the Germans.
