He also planned to destroy any landing craft before they could unload the allied infantry onto the beaches. Therefore naval mines, underwater obstructions, land mines, steel obstacles called "Czech Hedgehogs", slanted and sharpened pointed wooden obstacles called Rommelspargel (Rommel's Asparagus) were laid on the beaches along with more anti-tank guns, machine gun positions and bunkers which were all added to various parts across the defences.
