About the Project
For a long while I dreamed of having a space to call my own. This is the journey from a tray on my desk to a full hobby space. The other main part of this topic will be about equipment and setting up a space that works, my goal is to do this on somewhat of a budget and find interesting work arounds for everyday hobby issues.

The work bench
First I found a good solid work area that would take little wood working to prep.
Hollow core doors are nearly perfect when it comes to dimensions and being square and level.
The main one is 30 inches wide and the other is 24 inches.
They will be laid out in a L shape with the 30 inch one used against the wall longways and the 24 inch one coming out from the wall as a peninsula.
The first thing to do to mount the surfaces to the wall was to use a 2×4 along the wall as a ledger. This ran proud of the main surface so that it was supporting the second one also, there was a shorter ledger in the corner which allowed to main 30 inch door to be mounted to the wall. The real key was to make sure I found the studs in the wall and to make sure it was level across the whole span. To fasten the ledger to the wall and for pretty much all of the connections cabinet screws worked perfectly as they are designed to handle much more weight than is planned.
The Plan ... or how to stop hating all the boxes and learn to love the move.
With the need to make a space for my hobbies I decided that we would uproot the company and our home and move everything 100+ miles south. After looking at many houses and losing 3 to either failed inspections of literally being told when we put our offer in it was sold we found the perfect house. It had a nice basement and room for a hobby area and it wouldn’t be in my office. Here I am going to digress and let everyone know that if you are already someplace DON’T MOVE! After moving I have decided that I am were I will be for a long time.
Home ownership is where I prove that my hobby area may be the most expensive of all time. We had to rip out all the carpet from the basement, ProTip don’t ever put carpet in a basement, and get the foundation fixed and waterproofed so the floor wouldn’t flood again. This overall took more time than anyone could have thought. Once the new floor was in it was time to start the hobby area in earnest.
This part of the update is more a cautionary tale to all who think that getting into the new home will be easy and your hobby area will just come together will be sorely disappointed.
It took nearly 6 months to get to the point I could start the area and here is how I did it…
It all started with a dream..
I got hold a hobby tray, from Warlord I am pretty sure, and used this for years. It would live on a shelf in my office space and I would clean off my desk so that I could do some hobby. It was nice because with the space we had in the house it could be stored away and clean up was pretty easy.
Ikea came to the rescue when it came to organizing my little projects and these also fit on my hobby shelf.
This set up served me well for years but I knew there could be something better. There had to be a way to get more space and to set up a dedicated space just to get away that wouldn’t get in the way of work and wouldn’t let work get in the way of my hobby time.
I love it when a plan comes together.
