Boardgames Shelving

About the Project
Tired of constantly tripping over my lovingly collected boardgames, I have set out to create a space for them in my home - with room to expand in the future!

Boardgames. Everywhere.
We have a lot of boardgames now. A collection five years in the making but very little space to keep cramming new ones in, precariously balancing them on their older brethren. I’m going to Spiel at the end of this year – which means more boardgames are incoming – so we needed to do something about the ones we had first.
Ikea is a wonderful place. The hotdogs aside, my house is pretty much 70% of the good Swede stuff. All of our RPGs are housed somewhat neatly in Billy bookcases. Turns out Ikea is also a great place for boardgame storage. Enter the Kallax range.
Kallax is part of Ikea’s squared storage solutions and comes in several sizes. I didn’t go for the largest one in the end – it simply wouldn’t fit the wall I had ear-marked for the games.
I had to check a few of the larger game boxes first to ensure they would fit the squared shelves but as luck would have it, they were pretty much perfect.
Delivery was swift and the assembly took about 30-60 minutes. Instructions were somewhat easy to follow (much of the assembly is “repeat these 3-4 steps”) and the finished product stands solidly on it’s own without the need for wall brackets (although it did come with them). It does not have a skirting board allowance so it does have to stand not quite flush to the wall.
That said, the Kallax does fit all our games with plenty of room for more.
A home for the games
Finally, the collection has a new home, away for direct sunlight, the floor and far more easily accessible.
As you can see, there’s plenty of space left over so I can happily buy more games in Essen later this year!
