About the Project
This is the first 28mm fantasy Army I have created in many years. I have been considering this project for a while now. However, the biggest barrier was deciding on a rule set, as it had to be one that would be acceptable at our club. So recently when Midgard Heroic Battles by James Morris was released and my club mates started talking about this. The time was right...so here goes my journey.

Oil be all right
As shown in one of the other posts I have a Skeleton Riding a Worm from Runewars.
I wanted to paint it following the same technique I have done for the rest of the Runewars skeletons. However for them I used the Army Painter Dark Tone dip, unfortunately I have run out of this dip. So I decided to see if I could get some more …wow the price of that is now nearly £25…😬😬😬
So I decided now would be the time to try the oil paint wash technique every one seems to like and so I ordered some Windsor and Newton black oil paint and thinners.
Unfortunately this is where I made a mistake and found that the thinner I ordered was for water based paint..and oil and water don’t mix 🤦🏻♂️
After figuring out that I just needed to buy some white spirit and then trying again I found that it mixed really well. So ready for the test.

Background to the army
The cool thing about Midgard Heroic Battles is the flexibility of the game. It’s a rule set which enables you to create armies of either a historical flavour from various periods in history..so from ancient greek through to Wars of the roses and beyond, a mate of mine is even considering using it for doing a Rourke’s Drift game. However my interest is doing a fantasy army, as there is even a basic magic system that can be used.
I am most interested in developing a theme to my undead army and have two ideas. Which I think would work. I may do one or even both we will see.
Option One - the Necromancer
My first idea is to create an army with an historical feel to it. The story is basically a Necromancer in the medieval period has discovered he can raise the dead. He then goes around raising armies of long dead warriors from various different countries. So ancient greek warriors, Romans, vikings , a zombie dragon from china. This means I can create interesting flavours to the dead and not get too bored.
Option two - the four Horsemen
The second option and possibly one I am leaning towards the most at the moment is to create an army of the dead based around the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. Each of the Army Commanders will be one of the Horsemen and their troops will be themed around them So Death with Skeletons , Famine with ghouls, War with Drauger ( undead Vikings) and pestilence with zombies.
I just need to find some fantastic representations of the Four Horsemen in 28mm scale or larger to make them look imposing so any suggestions would be welcome.
In the beginning
I have been wanting to do a fantasy Army for a while. I have been thinking about an army around the Undead. However where to start?
Trawling through the inter web , it is clearly a popular subject for miniatures. There are so many ranges. From the fantasy to the more historical, from the reasonably priced to the slightly higher end … I remember when I could get a pack of five citadel minis and still have change from a fiver.
As fate would have it Wargames Atlantic decided to release their Classic Fantasy Skeleton Army box set, and with that my decision was made. The lovely box set arrived, a couple of days after I ordered it.
Other stuff
I have been gaming for a good few years now, and I have amassed a quantity of figures of the years. So I decided to see what I have in my stash. After a rummage I have come up with some additional undead options that I can use.
Rune Quest
A few years ago before the event…there was a time when On Tabletop hosted bootcamp’s I miss these they were so much fun. Anyway one of the boot camps was the Army Painter bootcamp, a weekend of painting figures from the short lived Runequest game from I believe Fantasy Flight. And I e of the Armies from the box set was the undead, which I painted over the weekend. Yes ok I said I had not painted a 28mm fantasy army, but 25 figures is a skirmish force not an army 🤣🤣🤣.
Dungeons and Lasers
In amongst one of the many Kickstarter’s I have backed there was my dungeons and lasers collection which includes a Zombie dragon so I cracked that open, built it and have started to paint it. It’s not finished but it was basically zenithed and then painted using the army painter speed paint bone colour, followed by a dark red contrast paint which was then washed with a thinned Red and black mix for the skin.
Punga Miniatures
Another set of figures I have found was some undead Musicians, which is another Kickstarter purchase. These are lovely resin miniatures and we t together really well. My favourite is the Eternal Freddie miniature…as a fan of Queen I had to have it.
Four Horsemen
This section will be dead..icated to the build of the theme of the four horsemen idea.
The Mini's
I have spent a few hours searching through Etsy and other sites to see if I could locate some suitable minis to represent the four Horsemen.
Then I remembered that I had the Apocalypse Set from Joan of Arc Time if Legends. Which just so happened to have figures for the 4 horsemen.
Joan if Arc is a 15mmish game from the now defunct Mythic Games. So I was not sure that they would work. But having found them they actually scale pretty well to 28mm figures so I think that they will indeed work.
In preparation I washed the minis in warm soapy water followed by a zenith with plasticoat Black and Grey then Army Painter White.
