Hobby Hash-up

This is my first attempt at painting 15mm tanks. Using a few simple clours and lots of weathering powders I think they came out well.

Probably the key to tying it all together is the decals. It turns the Olice Drab tank with few details in a more characterful and interesting to the eye miniature.

I went to the effor of paint black around the outside of the wheels and the proceded to cover it all with weathering powder. I think I was too heavy hand anyway and will add less next time.

I don’t always take M10 when playing FoW but I do now! I’m not leaving a precious painted mini at home.

Next up is a set of 6 M8 Priests.

I am putting together forces for playing Hail Casear. I am focusing on Carthage and her allies and mercenaries.

This allows me to field a variety of forces and my plan is that each force can stand alone and be it’s on Hail Caesar force.

I bought a load of Victrix minis a few years ago but I’ve focused for now on the Numidians. I hava a force consisting of Numidian Light Infantry, lots of Numidian Cavalry and Africna Elephants crewed by Numidians.

My forces are built but I’m just missing my commands to lead these units.

Over a grey stoney base I wash it in Nuln Oil, Dry Brush grey and then a little white. Following this I add the snow from GW’s Texture range. The tufts are green with a slight blue tint towards the bottom, I quite like this effect, I think it makes it look a bit more frostbitten.

The above command group was a joy to work on, it was nice to sit paint a few unique miniatures an give the extra details some attention.

I used the paints I listed below plus a few extras to paint the monkey and the radio etc. Hopefully the photos give an idea of what I used.

I’m used to painting plastics thanks to Warhammer but there is something really satisfying about having a hefty metal mini, it just suits historical minis.

I will jump into War of the Roses at some point and hoping Gripping Beast put the full North Rank range back on their store.

Way back I painted up Perry 8th Army and DAK but Warlord’s latest releases convinced me to sell a painted army to start all over again. I used Warlords paint set they sell (or at least did) as the bases for my paint scheme with a few changes. As it’s historics I mostly stick to Vallejo paints.

The above creates a nice faded desert uniform for the Brits.

The weathering for the Artillery and Vehichles I use Lead Belcher (just a little) and Mechanicus Standard Grey (focus more on this colour) and dab it on using a piece of foam/sponge for a more natural effect.

Later I may post photos of my tanks where pigment powders do a good job weathering the wheels as if they have been out in the hot sand for days.

This is my first squad of Levy for SAGA. After giving up on Saxons I liked the look of the Pagan Rus. With each new project there is usually something I want to achieve or experiment with. This time I wanted to make harsh winter bases suitble for that area of the Baltics.

The minis are the metals from Gripping Beast. It’s an odd notion but I like to have chunky metals for historical miniatures, the further back in the time scale the more metal minis. So my WWII Brits are metal and plastic and Medieval and older tend to be all metal. I’d love to get my hands on Front Ranks WoTR minis.

This one is bit of a throwback. My first Saga army that I bought was Saxons, but I went off them and sold all the plastics off. These last minis are metals I bought from Warlord Games and it was the first I tried highlighting miniatures and free handed St George’s cross on King Alfred’s shield (it was a big deal doing this early on in my hobby journey – and a bit anachronistic ;)) So these minis aren’t going anywhere, looking back I quite like this base and may do it for my WWII Late War Brits and Germs.

It’s Burnt Umber artist paint for the base (though I’d probably polyfiller it for texture now or use a texture paste before painting)

I used to hate basing my minis but I have a few simple methods that make it quick, easy and actually a little bit fun.
