About the Project

Hi, fellow OnTableTop community members! First time Project poster here. I have a habit of buying into games and never actually finishing them, including Star Wars: Legion. The starter box had been sitting on my shelf for a number of years. At the beginning of this year(2023), two of my friends who live 300 miles away had also purchased the starter box. We all got excited and decided to get some armies completed, then schedule a meetup later in the year for a few days of gaming. This really got me motivated to finally try and complete some miniatures, what follows is my "attempt" to achieve this and keep a log of the progress. (Please note, the posting dates may not align with the actual dates as these are being reposted from a Facebook group)

This Project is On Hold

Friday 15/11/24:

I had set a New Year’s resolution to try and finish this project, but unfortunately have to admit defeat…
It is going on hold for the time being until I can get motivated with Star Wars again.

I have a Full Spectrum Dominance project that I managed to complete in time (which I will post soon).
And also working on a Warhammer 40k Space Marine project for a friend, so definitely motivated to complete that one.

Friday 28/06/24:

As mentioned in my last update, here are some pictures of the leg parts printed previously.
A joint part is pressed into each of the lower leg slots so that the upper legs can slide onto them.
These joint parts are moveable from left to right to allow for different leg positions.

Sunday 28/04/24:

So…. it’s been a while.. (cough)a year(cough).

This update signifies the moons aligning (that’s no moon) and I have finally caught up with posting updates that are up-to-date(ish), no more backdated posts.

Because of this, I have finally decided to make this project public so if this is the first post you are reading, please have a read of the project description to understand why I started this project.

Which brings us to today and the long hiatus…

Unfortunately about the time of Update 14, back in April last year, it became apparent that my friends had not started assembling their starter boxes yet.
I checked with them and we came to the understanding that their enthusiasm for Star Wars: Legion had diminished which I completely understand, it really is a full-on hobby trying to get these miniature armies assembled and painted.
No hard feelings to the guys, though this did unfortunately kill my enthusiasm for the project quite a bit 🙁

Between last April and now, I have been doing some more 3D printing here and there.
Managed to get a few more AT-AT parts printed so in the next few updates I will post my progress regarding them.
Hopefully should be able to get them assembled soon but still a long way off getting the AT-AT done.
No progress has been made so far with the Storm Troopers, they are sitting in a display box for now.

I made a New Year’s resolution this year to (at least try) and finish what I have started, this project certainly falls under that category 😀

….So welcome to the project, thanks for taking an interest 🙂 hopefully I will get this finished someday.

Saturday 08/04/23:

Attempt number two, here we go.

I resprayed all of the Storm Troopers with a white undercoat this time, then moved straight onto the Contrast Apothecary White with Technical Contrast medium step.
And to be honest, I am so much happier with this look 🙂 and it was fast.
So fast in fact, I managed to get all of the imperial troop squads sprayed white and contrasted in five days.

Monday 03/04/23:

At this point, I still wasn’t sure how I felt about the painted models, so I pressed on hoping that a full squad would look better in this style.
It took multiple hours per model to get to this point and from a distance they kind of looked OK, but up close you could really see the speckling of the dry-brush layers.
Normally with slap-chop the contrast paint colour going over the black and grey dry-brushing would help to hide a lot of the grainy/speckling bits but with white, not so much.
Also, it really did take a lot of effort/hours just to get these models to an ok’ish looking result, IMO.

After a lot of deliberation and dejected feelings looking at these models, I decided to start again….

Monday 20/03/23:
(Heads up warning, I ended up re-doing this squad of Storm Troopers)

I started on my first attempt with white armour, I wanted to try the slap-chop style to hopefully speed up the project with results that I would be happy with.

So I approached the white armour in the same way as any other colour, working up from a black primer coat to start.
Then, used a makeup brush to dry brush Citadel Base Mechanicus Standard Grey over the black.
Next, I dry brushed some White Scar over more of the raised areas.
After that, used some Contrast Apothecary White with the Technical Contrast medium
over it all, carefully not letting it pool on the flat surfaces and the medium helped with this.
Finally, dry brushed over again with White Scar because I felt the armour looked too grey.

Tuesday 14/03/23:
This week I finished priming all the models black, I wasn’t prepared for how long it would take to base all the models and prime them.
It really did start to drag a bit, unfortunately, but now this part is done 🙂

Tuesday 07/03/23:
Feeling happy with the bases, I went to town and got all the bases covered with the bird sand 🙂
I then started to prime the character miniatures, the squad of scout troopers, and the larger models.

Friday 03/03/23:
After seeing the models primed, I was very unhappy with how they looked. To me, it just felt very flat and uninteresting.
So after finding “Swords and Brushes” youtube video on “How to base miniatures: For Beginners” I also decided to use Bird Sand, and have to say I think it looks great 🙂

Once again, I based the miniatures and Primed them.
I also tried this on some of the larger bases to see how it turned out.

Monday 27/02/23:
Continuing with test painting the SlapChop style, I decided to get two squads of Storm Troopers ready.
I used some fine sand, PVA glue, and an old large painting brush to get the sand on the bases, basic stuff.
Once dried overnight they were sprayed with some black primer, I used Army Painters Matt Black primer.

#UPDATE 7 - 22/02/23 - AT-AT Legs, Yoda, First Try At Painting

WIP Wednesday 22/02/23:
This week I managed to complete the lower leg sections for all four legs and also printed one top leg section to see how it fit.

Moving back to actual Legion miniatures, I realised I had made a mistake when I pulled Yoda’s bases out of the box and they were yellow, whoops.
These miniatures are meant for the Clone Wars Republic Army but I decided to make them anyway 😀

Next, I started to have a go at painting (pre-warning, the first attempts do not go well, in my opinion)
I had been watching Miniature Hobbyist’s YouTube channel and he had been showing off the slap-chop style, in the past, I have always run out of steam on projects when it came to painting 🙁
So seeing a technique that was fast and still looked ok for tabletop standard I decided to follow along.
As you could probably guess, this does not work so well on white armour which I found out later.

I started with a black undercoat primer on a Storm Trooper then moved on to medium grey dry brush. Next, a white dry brush was applied over this, I also used some Black Templar Contrast paint on the blaster.

#UPDATE 6 - 17/02/23 - AT-AT Feet

Friday 17/02/23:
For the last two weeks, I have continued the 3D printing side of things with more feet/leg parts.

All four feet have now been printed with the toe bits inserted, also one of the four lower leg parts has been completed and glued together with the half semi-circle joint inside (so it can move). Then that was attached to the foot with the two peg pieces.

After that was completed, I attempted to print out and assemble the piston parts, this was a pain and needed multiple reprints with each bit at different sizes until I found the sizes that I was happy with, this then allowed them to move around freely.

The piston size changes that worked for me (but might not work for anyone else’s 3D printer setup) are:

103-3-3 = 144.80%
103-4-4 = 133.80%
103-5-5= 139.80%
103-6-6 = 141.80%
103-7-7 = 141.80%

I have also uploaded a video showing the finished foot movement.

WIP Wednesday 15/02/23:
1x squad of Rebel Commandos done this week plus started on a project that I’ve always wanted to do since getting a 3D printer ? a 1/48 scale AT-AT for use with Legion ?

The files for the AT-AT were purchased from GamBody for personal use. If you want to have a look at the files for yourself, search for Gambody 3d printing via Google.

After a lot of trying to figure out what size I wanted to print at, I decided to print it at 144.80% of the original file size supplied in the stl files. I changed the scale size using Simplify3D slicer program.

WIP Wednesday 01/02/23:
Few more done in the last week, a squad of Imperial Death Troopers, General Veers, Cassian Andor, and K-2SO.

I made a small mistake with Cassian, I did not read the upgrade cards correctly and assumed that the A280-CFE Pistol and Sniper configs were separate weapon options.
So what did I do? only went and scraped off the hand on the pistol and added to the model as well as the rifle.
I realise now it’s meant to be the same weapon, haha.

Maybe Cassian got bored of re-configuring the gun and decided to get a second one 😀

WIP(work in progress) Wednesday 25/01/23:
So I have been working on the core box ? managed to get them all assembled with a little bit of magnetizing of the AT-RT’s weapons because I have no clue what the list building is going to be like yet haha.

Also assembled the AT-ST (though I had done some of it before because I have had that model for a few years now) getting really excited to play Legion.
