Rust
The rust I used on any of the grating on the wall sections came from a product a friend brought for me and this was my test bed for using it.
Growing the wall
I now built up the second part of the wall … this section is 1ft wide.
Back to the Wall
I now decided the wall needed some more attention ….
Firstly to paint it, Secondly …. to grow it!
Size comparision ...
It was then given the intial black / grey spray and left there for now … I need to go back in and spray it a bit lighter with the grey.
But this is how it compares to the other towers already built …… and a ganger to show jsut how big this thing is.
Each floor is 12cm high, the half floors are 6cm high (suprisingly).
Ends up like ......
Once built, its a whopping 26 inches tall!
Building it!
Aaannnnnnd I was right!
about 16 hours of build time (no idea if that was quick, slow, expected) later ….. Ill admit it took me about 40 minutes to find the first part!
While the instructions are clear on how to build it …. they could benefit from listing which sheet of MDF each part comes from.
It here I should also point out to give an idea of the scale of this thing ….. 422 pages of instructions!!!
Cloud Buster
And a few days later it magically arrived on my doorstep …. all 25 odd sheets of MDF!
Felt this was going to be a long slog!
2nd Distraction!
Trawling through the internet … I found this monster of a thing!
It definately met the high, overbearing criteria of what I was building to.
Back to the 1st Tower
Happy with how the EBF-25 tower turned out, I went back in and painted the first tower in the same way with a spot colour, and then a wash on the floor/walkways and then weathering around the edges of the tower.
EBF-25 reactor - painting
(Still holding my breathe!)
This was painted in the same way as the previous 2 pieces.
However I decided to complete the paint job to see how I wanted everything to progress to add more interest other than the current monochrome look.
I decided on a red as a spot colour (Tuscan red by DecoArt) and heavily dry brushed this on to a few select areas.
The walkways and floor was given a brown wash to add some depth to the colour scheme and then the edges were given a weathering by sponging on a combination of Rhinox Hide, Steel Legion Drab, Zandri Dust, Baneblade Brown, Tallern Sand and Chainmail.
I wanted to add “Decay” to the overall theme of what I was making and think it turned out well.
I may come back at some point and add even more to it, but for now, I think it fits right in to what Im hoping to achieve.
It was here that the model got its name….. The gun I used is a Nerf EBF-25 and durign the removal of all the guns safety warnings, I decided to leave on the gun ID as it sounded very mechanical and would just add another small touch to the story.
EBF-25 Reactor
Ok … were learning ….. do not add too many photos to each update!
3rd time writing this part (deep breathe) …..
At this stage, I moved straight onto the next tower. I took the larger Nerf gun and cut it in half (the other half will be used later as another tower).
This looked pretty industrial from the get go, so all I added here was some more pipes, and the walkways. (I dont have any photos of this) but the walkways were made using the method shown by Erics hobby workshop on Youtube.
I found a product called Roominate on Ebay and glued some sculpting mesh over the top. This was then covered around the edges with a strip of card to hide any joins, make it all level, and to stop yourself being snagged on small pieces of metal!
Painting the first tower
The intial painting of the tower was done in the exact same way as the wall piece.
A black undercoast followed by a angled down spray of grey to create some interesting shadow.
The first two pieces together with a Delaque ganger for scale.
1st Distraction!
“2nd attempt at this bit as it didnt appear to save 1st time round even though it told me it did” …….
At this stage I wanted to jump into making my first towers to test how it would all start to look when pulled together.
Id seen on another Youtube channel (I think its Dark Matter Workshop) a tower that I thought looked awesome and would fit into my theme and by chance found the same waterpistol and so proceeded to basically copy what was shown on the channel.
The base and walkways were made from Foamboard wrapped in a thin strip of card to protect it from melting from the spray paints I was using, and then some texture added by applying thin strips of card. This would help with some defination when painting and also applying the washes I wanted to do.
The pipes were plastic drinking straws and some kids plastic tube building pieices.
All in all, the tower is 18 inches in height, so it looms large over the inhabitants of the Underhive!
Before painting – It looks exactly like it is …. a waterpistol with pipes glued to it!
"The Wall" - Painting
I wanted a quick and easy way to paint the terrain I was making, and wanted it to have a very dark, cold feeling to it and to minimise the colour palette that I was going to use.
So the model was given a black undercoat, and then an angled down spray of grey.
"The Wall"
The first thing I wanted to do, was to build “The Wall” – a piece to edge the table and to help make the miniatures seem very small within the environment they are fighting in.
Having spent an afternoon dismantling the Nerf guns and also an old printer I started to look at how to combine the parts to make the wall section.
The first section of the wall would be 24 inches wide and 13 inches high and 3 inches deep. The base structure was made from Cardboard to give a solid frame to add the details to.
When you start ….. It does look pants! – but hopefully it gets much more “industrial looking” once it has some paint on it.
To begin with, two piece of one of the guns fitted together nicely to make a pretty cool looking doorway.
Once that was done, I started to build up the detail by throwing random things at it and to try to break the lines so things didnt look to “straight” or “flat”
Below is the detailing going over the top of the door way.
Gradually I just then kept adding other pieces along the wall under it was pretty densely covered with random parts.
Like I say, when it in its raw form, I takes some inagination to see what it will look like when painted.
This is how it looked once most of the pieces had been glued into place. I kept adding a few details here and there to pack out the wall.
The Plan
I was looking to get back into Necromunda having previously played 1st edition and really wanted a modelling project to go with it, as I prefer the idea of height when thinking of Necromunda and all the winding walkways and platforms inbetween the heavy industrial machinery.
I aslo wanted to try to show off the oppressive nature of the underhive, the size, scale, coldness of the environment.
While Youtube channels such as Erics Hobby Workshop gave some ideas, I didnt want to scratch build in the same way.
What really helped to formulate my ideas were channels by PolyChopShop, Jason Jensen Trains (strange I know and not click bait for Lloyd! – but he does a really cool Sci-Fi diorama layout) and Scratch Bashing which made me want to build some table edging terrain fitting in with my scope above.
Enter Nerf guns! I certainly wont be the first to do it, but the really help to set the scene I was looking for.
I raided my Nephews Nerfgun collection and then started to think about how these could be used.
I tend to bounce between different parts of the project as I find it keeps me more interested to keeping the project moving.
The Guns featured in the build are the following …..
