About the Project

This is a 54mm 'Conan the Barbarian' miniature from Andrea Miniatures. The miniature is over 20 years old and I have decided to start stretching my painting skills again for showcase pieces. It will be a good place to get underway with practicing again.

First Steps with the Base

Hi everyone,

This year I want to work on my atrophied painting skills, and there is no way better than taking the deep dive into showcase miniature painting.  Now, I have never been a competitive painter, nor have I won any awards, but I do enjoy taking my time and painting a model up to my best abilities.

So I have started with a very old 54mm Andrea miniature called ‘The Barbarian II’. It is certainly over 20 years old for sure and I have had it for nearly that long as well.  I also have the first iteration (The Barbarian), but it is mostly skin and I find that much harder.

I started with the base.  Cleaning it and putting it together.

The next step was to find a base from my stash and test fit it.

Once I was satisfied with the fit I assembled everything and added some body and texture with milliput.  I also gave it the first base coat and masked the base to protect it from the painting process.

Finally, I painted the whole thing up.  The whole process only took me an afternoon.  To be honest I could have gone much faster, but I watched all three Conan movies while I very lazily went about it.

The base is finally done.  I left the tape on because I forgot to take it off at this point.

That is all for  now.  I hope to finish the Conan model by Friday, but because I am very undisciplined, I have already started another project in the meantime and now I have to mange both!

Until next time, farewell and stay safe.

Hi everyone,

I have started work on the main figure.  The way I approach painting figures is first to apply base colours, in order to figure out the tone and colour palette to use.  Then I go on to the shading and highlights.

I forgot to add this photo showing a step in the painting process.I forgot to add this photo showing a step in the painting process.
A Quick Update.

Hopefully, I will finish this model by Sunday.  I find that embarking on these small projects and completing them helps build up my confidence and determination to tackle larger projects like dioramas and army building.

So until Sunday, farewell and stay safe.

Hi everyone,

This little project is finally finished.  I really like starting a project and finishing it within a week!  I will be doing more of them as in-between projects to help me overcome the stress of painting armies.  It allows me to break from the repetitive process of army painting and do something more artistic and leisurely for a week.  A break without taking a break!

The last steps was to add highlights and shadows to the main and only figure.  I tried to stay true to the source, but I had to help the figure out a bit.

The final step was to attach the Conan miniature and add a little vegetation to break up the base.  The setting is in a semi-desert area so I kept the vegetation to a minimum.

That’s a wrap.  Now I am going to focus on the IDF diorama.

Until my next post, farewell and stay safe.
