Orinoco’s Occasional Forge Fathers Project

About the Project
With Deadzone 3.0 out it's about time for some reinforcements for my Forge Fathers. Most of these have been sitting in an unpainted/semi-painted state for some time now. Eventually this project will move from Deadzone through Firefight to Warpath with a bit of Stargrave in between. The key word is eventually as I intend to do other projects in between batches of this.

This Project is On Hold
14 more get ready for March (part 1)
14 more Forge Fathers finished to tabletop standard. The same methods and colours were applied as the previous entries. These had been siting base coated for a couple of years.
Dana Howl on You Tube has videos on using Pale Sand and Glazing that are really useful https://www.youtube.com/c/DanaHowl
I believe there may be a Deadzone campaign in March.
Hellermal Pattern Iron Ancestor
Really struggled to get half decent photos, so these will have to do. The same painting method and scheme was used as the Forge Guard.
Thorgarim/Thorgarim Huscarle
This is a conversion using the hands and weapon from the old (much smaller) metal Thorgarim and the hard plastic Steel Warriors kit. It was painted using the same method and scheme as the Steel Warrior Missile Issilegarim.
Steel Warrior Missile Issligarim
The same paint and techniques were used on the Steel Warrior Missile Issligarim as Ingulf Kresturrson, but the original base coat/prime was different (see earlier post).
The cloth parts and gloves were a 50/50 glaze of Vallejo Glaze Medium and Green Grey (Vallejo Model Color), followed by Army Painter Strong Tone and dry brushed with Pale Sand (Vallejo Model Color).
Forge Guard Missile Issligarim
The same paint and techniques were used on the Forge Guard Missile Issligarim as Ingulf Kresturrson, but the original base coat/prime was different (see earlier post).
Bomb Bot
The same paint and techniques were used on the Bomb Bots as Ingulf Kresturrson.
Padd
After the prime, wash and drybrush Padd was given a 50/50 glaze of Vallejo Glaze Medium and Filthy Brown (Vallejo Game Color).
The mouth and scars were painted with the remainders of the skintones used on Ingulf that were still on my palette. The teeth were painted Ivory (Vallejo Model Color) then given a glaze with a mix of water and Orange Rust (Vallejo Model Air).
The belly and back of the legs were painted with a 50/50 glaze of Vallejo Glaze Medium and Ivory.
The metal leg was painted using the same technique as Ingulf Kresturrson.
Ingulf Krestursson
The beard was base coated Green Grey (Vallejo Model Color), followed by Ivory (Vallejo Model Color)and then white extreme highlights.
The skin was base coated Dark Fleshtone (Vallejo Game Color) mixed with Dwarf Skin (Vallejo Game Color). A layer of Dwarf Skin was then applied followed by a highlight of Dwarf Skin mixed with Ice Yellow (Vallejo Model Color).
The purple roughly followed Sam Lenz’s How to Paint Glowing Eyes – Painting With the Pro https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aOCaK3H-EmM using Purple Ink and White paint.
The figure was gloss then matt varnished for protection and then the metals were applied.
The metals were either:
- Base coated black
- Gunmetal Grey (Vallejo Model Color) mixed with a spot of Panzer Dark Grey (Vallejo Model Air)
- Washed with Army Painter Strong Tone
- Highlighted with Silver (Vallejo Game Color) mixed with a spot of white
or:
- Base coated Brown
- then Bright Bronze (Vallejo Game Color) mixed with a spot of Red Leather (Vallejo Model Color)
- Washed with Army Painter Strong Tone
- Highlighted with Bright Bronze mixed with Silver and White
Reinforcements Arrived
Following on from the Paynes Grey Wash and drybrush of Pale Sand everything Green was give a 50/50 mix of Vallejo Glaze Medium and Reflective Green (Vallejo Model Color).
Changed the basing
I changed the basing of the Forge Fathers from the cover picture.
I brushed on a couple of coats of IDF Israeli Sand Grey (Vallejo Surface Primer), dry brushed the rocks Pale Sand (Vallejo Model Color) and used Heavy Grey (Vallejo Game Extra Opaque) on the rim. The orange was still apparent on parts of the rocks, but I thought it was a good effect.
This was followed by my basing mix using Gerry’s technique https://www.beastsofwar.com/featured/gerry-can-how-to-make-custom-basing-mix/ . The base was sealed with a mixture of PVA, Matt Medium and Flow Aid. Gloss then Matt varnish was applied to the rim.
Starting first batch of reinforcements
Ingulf Krestursson, Padd and the bomb bots were cleaned up and assembled then given a prime with IDF Israeli Sand Grey (Vallejo Surface Primer). The Iron Ancestor, Forge Guard, Steel Warrior and Thorgarim had already been primed grey then base coated Medium Olive (Vallejo Model Air).
Everything was given a wash of Payne’s Grey made from Daler Rowney Payne’s Grey Ink and Gerry’s wash medium https://www.beastsofwar.com/featured/gerry-can-how-to-make-diy-professional-washes/ (Limited to Cult of Game members). This was then followed by a drybrush of Pale Sand (Vallejo Model Color).
I will be keeping the green theme for my Forge Fathers, but will change the orange basing.
A note on the Vallejo Model Air Medium Olive (71.092). It is not the same colour/shade as the Model Color Medium Olive (70.850) which is lighter. Model Color Reflective Green (70.890) is a match to Model Air Medium Olive, both having a RAL number of 6003.
