About the Project
Enough messing around - let's get this done.
Related Genre: General
This Project is Active
Because I haven't updated since the last time I updated...
Pics of stuff follow. Have also been working on Covenanters, dabbling in Landsknechts, 1745 rebellion Jacobites, Persians, plus some WW2. Why would we stick to a genre/period/region/setting? I’m struggling just to stick to a consistent scale as it is….
Oldhammering Away....
My next 500 points of DElves for the 6th ed Oldhammer challenge. Yet more Core (tried to be responsible and do the boring bits first), so a second block of spearelves, second block of Corsairs and added a second Reaper bolt thrower for good measure. Also added in a champion for my dark riders courtesy of a luck EBay find. I have now hit the magic 2,000 point threshold. Next month will be a couple more bolt throwers and a pair of chariots so I’ll have options.
Also finished off a block of 20 Skaven I’d kicked off earlier, did up a second and added some weapon teams and characters, so I’ll have another ‘slow burn’ project I can switch to when I feel like flicking Contrast paints at something.
More ACW...
A more sedate level of addition for my ACW this time around – 2 groups of Union sharpshooters and 2 units of Confederate dismounted cavalry for Sharp Practice. All Perry Miniatures metal with the exception of the one with the rail-post fence which is a Warlord metal to bring me up to a full unit.
Archaon's Horde
Challenge for October and November on the Wargamers Anonymous server was to do a ‘brigade’. So I opted for a Norse and Chaos Undivided army, originally both planned for Warhammer Armies Project, combined and rolled out as a Storm of Chaos 6th ed army. Just need to paint the big guy, add some hellcannons then go stomp on Middenheim….
A magic banner short of 5,000 points, can’t remember how many minis, somewhere around 320ish?…
Dark Elves Oldhammer Challenge Month #2 and #3
Belated update.
For Month #2 added 8 Cold One Riders with full command, a Cold One Chariot and a dark Elf Sorceress.
Month 3 was a second block of 10 Repeater Crossbows, 16 Corsairs with Command, a Reaper Bolt thrower and a BSB from Raging Heroes. Videos & shots of the army as presently stands follow.
A Tale of Four... Grognards?...
I jumped in (read: Invited myself/gatecrashed) an Oldhammer 6th edition 500 points a month ‘slow grow’ army challenge kicked off by Phil at Wargamers Anonymous and Russ at GFN Gaming (respective Youtube channels). Anyone who is old enough to remember the White Dwarf ‘A Tale of Four Gamers’ article series already knows the drill. Idea is a ‘slow grow’ army build league but rather than doing GBP/Euro/Dollars per month worth of toys the threshold has been set at 500 points of 6th ed a month. Given the price of Oldhammer minis on Ebay for the last year or so, this was done for the greater good.
I plinked for Dark Elves as a) nobody else was doing them; b) I didn’t have an army painted up for them yet and c) I have a cunning plan about merging them with my Slaanesh Daemonettes for the Cult of Slaanesh list for the Storm of Chaos campaign. And d) seething rage filled goths I guess…
So month 1 was a Noble in (very) light armour, 15 Spearelves with command (I painted up 20 because I wanted to build ‘complete’ units that were also 7th, 8th ed and WAP friendly…) 10 repeater crossbow elves, 5 Dark Riders with a musician (which took an hour to build/kitbash from numerous components but there you go…) and 5 shades with light armour (Oathmark light elf heads and torsos with dark elf weapon arms). So with that lot painted I had a whole point to spare. Would have invested it in Dogecoin but feel that might have been June’s meme so have probably missed the boat… Anyhow… Being a dirty cheating Dark Elf player, next month is only 10 minis for my 500 points (8 cold one riders, a sorceress and a chariot) so going to lean into the Nordvember monthly theme and see if I can work on Archanon’s Horde of vanilla flavored chaos for even more 6th ed Storm of Chaos goodness. Because reasons?…
More ACW...
Confederates this time. All Perry minis. 3 mounted commanders, 2 blocks of cavalry, a 2 gun battery with crew and another 2 units of infantry. So all up now I have about three times what I need for a game of Sharp Practice, with more on the way. I don’t know how this happened or how to make this project stop – please send help… Or coffee, sending coffee so I can paint more ACW minis would be good too… 😉
Going Dark...
Quick fire project for the last couple of weeks to get the core of a Dark Age Saxon army ready to tabletop. Still need more regular Ceorl and Thegn infantry before it’s tabletop ready, but a start has been made at least.
Minis all Gripping Beast and Warlord. Banners are Little Big Men Studios.
First project using more scenic multibases, and yeah, I’m now sold on the idea of doing this where possible.

High Elves - Chrace
Visited another province on the ‘get all the High Elves painted’ tour, Chrace this time. 2 units of White lions, a block of spearmen, 2 blocks of archers and 4 (heavily kitbashed and greenstuffed) murder-floof chariots. To lead, the standard hero/BSB/caster combo – Korhil, a standard bearer and High Elf mage. Not sure if I’ll add more to this one – pretty happy to draw a line under it rather than to keep making incremental additions. I know the command groups in the archers are not a good use of points game-wise, but I like the way they look so there they are.
Also finally got the movement trays on my undead decorated…
Next province will be Avelorn I think, but have a lot of historicals to clear from the workbench first…
ACW Progress
Not sure why but this bit took a while to work through. 3 mounted commanders, artillery battery commander, 2 guns and 10 crew, 2 blocks of 8 cav, 3 units of infantry and a commander on foot have been added in. Done now, despite the grind required to complete. Going to mix things up a bit and work on something else before topping up the Confederate side of the project to an equivalent mass. Just need to figure out exactly what to work on next…
Tzeentch Adds Part 1
Adding a few Tzeentch characters for my beastmen army, and painting up a Tzeentch chaos warrior – can’t remember why but there you go… Also finished and based a couple of units of horrors I had kicking about. A few more bits to tidy up in the Tzeentch space, then just need to fix the bases on my other Tzeentch warriors and can draw a line under this chaos god at least…
Undead
Started a Kings of War undead project a while back – decided to teach myself how to paint black, white and NMM’s on a horde army. Don’t do this… Having put it past for a few years I decided to get stuck in and get the core of a force painted up. Again, just aiming for tabletop standard, with whistles and bells to be added later. minis are a mix of Mantic, GW, Reaper and Warlord. have a few bits and pieces from other manufacturers to add in to make the minis look a bit more diverse – I like the idea that the army is formed from elements of multiple other armies so the diversity of weapons and armour is something I personally like the look of. Of course your mileage may vary…
Elves
Elves, everybody loves elves. Except for those that don’t of course… I’ve been hoarding elves for more years than I care to admit and am now reasonably confident that there is no need to add them all to my existing elf army. so the solution I have come to is to do an elf army for each of the High Elf provinces in the old world until such time as I:
- Run out of minis;
- Run out of provinces; or
- Run out of motivation.
Having an unreasonable amount of swordmasters, Saphery was the obvious starting point. Still need to add a loremaster and a Teclis (he comes free with every second-hand high elf army you pick up on ebay – true story) but the core of the force is done. Whistles and bells can be added later.
I’m also toying with the idea of an Autumn-themed forest elf army, because more projects…
Next stop on our tour around the provinces – Chrace.
Too Many Projects - Not Enough Bench Space
Slowly coming out of a phase of not being in the right frame of mind to get any painting done. So now let’s turn the volume up to 11 on the ‘get stuff painted-o-meter’ and see how far we get…
