About the Project

I got this through the door a few weeks ago and I figured I should paint it. The first few posts are what I've done over the past couple of weeks before starting this project log. Thus far this set has been an absolute joy to paint. The bases will be finished when I finish painting them all, I think I'm going to do them all in one go.

Figuring out how to play this thing

I played through the tutorials then tried my hand at a hunt.  The rules seem a bit confusing at first but after a few turns they become second nature. Its not as complicated as it first seems.

As to how my hunt went,  it was going great until night fell, because f*** me it gets brutal when it gets dark.  Only the witch hunter made it out. So it was a victory albeit a pyrrhic one.

Now on to my next challenge; convincing the wife how to play.

Magnets magnets magnets

I decided my Cursed City miniatures need a decent storage case and by decent storage case I mean a really useful box. I followed a tutorial on Duncan Rhodes’s YouTube channel.  I’d link to the specific video, but the link function is throwing a massive wobbly when I try and add one on my phone, so I’ll give a run down.

You’ll need a really useful box. Mine is a 4 litre. You’ll also need some steel rubber sheeting, a craft knife, cutting mat, steel ruler and some cheap superglue.

The steel rubber comes in A4, which is a little too small. So you’ll need to cut a second sheet to fit. To do this lay the sheet you want to cut on the bottom flush with one short edges of the box. Next get another sheet and lay it flush with the other end. Use this top sheet as a guide and make two notches on the bottom sheet. Remove the bottom sheet and set it down on your cutting mat, get your steel ruler and put it flush with your notches. Now score along it with your knife until you cut through. Next apply superglue to your box and stick your sheets down.  Leave your box to dry for at least 24 hours with the lid off. This is to stop the inside of the box “frosting”.  Also don’t put your minis into the box while it’s curing otherwise they’ll go frosty.

Next came magnetising the minis. It was a simple as fixing them to the underside of the bases with superglue.  The bigger bases were too deep for my magnets, so I bulked them out with some greenstuff.

Sealing the bases

I had to annex the dining table for this next stage.  I made a mix of water, pva glue and isopropanol and applied it to the bases. I also noticed there were some bases where I could still see the slotta groove, so I covered that with a bit of the basing material while everything was still wet.

My chosen basing material My chosen basing material

I picked up a bag of arid earth basing mix from Geek Gaming Scenics. I think it blends in pretty well with my easter egg box flagstones.  One of the ingredients is tile grout, which helps cement the bigger stones in place. Downside is its dusty as ****.  So I’m going to have to brush it off the rims before I seal them.

The big bad himself.  This guy is so imposing he’d give Buffy a run for her money. He was a lot of fun to paint. I tried to keep similar themes that I’ve been running with, like the green. Like Darrock he turned out the way I wanted him to.

This guy is the reason I bought this box. I love the warhammer fantasy witch hunter aesthetic, I even cosplayed as one many moons ago. I really took my time with Darrock, and he came out exactly the way I wanted him to.

I did these mostly in contrast.  I don’t use it much other than for staining metals, so I just wanted to play with it. I think they’ve turned out alright. Due to their colours they have been named Snot and Turd.

I painted Torgillius last week and forgot to add him, oops. I went with purple of him, he’s the Chamberlain after all, he has access to the expensive fabric. He’s also necromancer and purple just suits.

Vampires! Vampires standing on masonry. Vampires! Vampires standing on masonry.

I had a lot of fun painting these.  I don’t think I moved from my seat the entire time I was painting them.  They are actually a bit more purple in real life. To achieve my vampire skin tone is quite easy.  First base coat the flesh with Rakarth Flesh, then apply a wash of druchii violet. Once that’s dry then drybrush the skin with Rakarth flesh, then without washing your brush drybrush a very light layer of palid Wych flesh.

Now with these three done, that means I’ve only got two left to paint. Then it’s on to the basing.

Dagnai is my least favourite sculpt in the set. He was also my least favourite to paint. He’s just too busy.  All that aside I think he came out alright.

Gorslav is my favourite bad guy in the box. He just looks horrific.  I went with green again, which seems to be a theme now.

Zombie Cats

Some undead cats. I figured black cats would be fitting to the setting.  The glowy eyes were achieved by painting a little wraithbone onto the eyeball and then going over it with a bit of Nihilahk oxoide.

Creepy wizard time. I think Octren needs to find a better way of carrying his book, his current method seems inefficient.  I decided purple was the way to go for his robes.

Some more objectives. This time crows with keys. Come to think of it a lot of Ulfemkarn’s wildlife is carrying a key. What does it open? Who knows? But it certainly seems suspicious.

It would seem I’m going green for the bad guys. The Nightguard were a lot of fun to paint. The did take a while mind you. I continued with the dirty, rusty theme the rest of the bad guys have. They’re zombies the don’t care about keeping their gear clean and oiled.  I’m pretty sure these guys are into ZZ Top, look at their beards.

Captain Emelda Braskov.  Quite fun to paint.  I decided she should be a bit cleaner than the others because of her paladin aesthetic.  Going with the paladin theme I had to paint her silver and blue.
