Imperial Zoo: Manticore

One thing I love about 4th and 5th edition Warhammer is the Monster lists. Every army can pretty much take ANY monster. I also love the fact that The Empire can take dwarfs and ogres but I will wax lyrical about that another time.

In the Imperial Zoo, The Emperor Karl Franz has a menagerie of exotic creatures kept for science, warfare and personal mounts. This fella is turned loose on the enemies of the Empire and hopefully engages the enemy rather than turn its attention to its captures!

The model is from the old dungeon crawler “Dark World” and fits with the 90’s GW vibe.

Below is a stage by stage. I’ll do the base after I have varnished.

Marcus the champion/hero of the crossbowmen has been completed. I tried my hand at darker skin tones, as these fellows are essentially from Italy. Not sold on my recipe but i’ll keep trying!!

The inspirationThe inspiration

I’ve decided to go with a Marksmen of Miragliano scheme and maybe if/when I get the original models they can join to make a larger unit.

The Battle Masters are certainly a challenge…..mould-lines all around the model and even on ALL the faces. The detail is erm…….as you would expect from the famously awesome 90’s. (but I do actually love it).

I’ve started using oil washes on my miniatures and I’m sold. The contrast it creates is great, it does not show amazingly on the crossbow man but I retrospectively oiled my Stormcaste conversion Bobby (Ooh err) and I think its an improvement on the original. Oh and I also did a bit on a Bretonnian knight, while I waited for the oils to dry.

Tilean Crossbows

4th edition was my introduction into the hobby of wargaming and Warhammer, this is my absolute nostalgia fueled, self indulgent, Spring Clean Challenge. I’m older, with an income and can now afford the models a young me could only dream of 27 years ago. Welcome to the dream!

I have plenty of eBay back-log to work through; paint, strip etc….

Strip?.......Strip?.......

Firstly I have some Battle Masters crossbows to work on. They look Tilean, so I will work out a suitable scheme. If anyone can identify the champion for the unit, you win nerd points!
