Oily Highs and Lows
so oils on and then I started doing work on the 9th toyed with oils it looked amazing but I wanted to try some acrylic inks, paints, glazes brushed and airbrushed on to see how they look.
They do not look as good as the oils, I wanted to paint in oils, why did I not paint in oils? Discuss.
So with that in mind, I have learned my lesson and the regular Shivers will be finished in oils as originally planned.
But the initial yellow/red ink and then green oil to blend the upper armour and brown on the lower legs looks well.
I’ll be finishing another green over the armour and then detail.
Painting Black with Blue and Red.
so I want to do a set of 9th Division everyone’s favourite and snappiest dressers of the world of progress.
Since the armour is mostly black I wanted to experiment more with oils and painting black with coloured undertones.
So I started with red base shade and then a zenith of cyan over the top giving me these poppy young fellows
I really like the look but it needs to get darker and the first step was a prussian blue/black oil mix over the top to tie them together and smooth out my piss poor airbrushing.
Rogues and Scoundrels
After discovering that my Knight Models are scaled extremely close to the Shivers I think you’ll find there will be no stopping me in using my Star Wars minis in Stargrave for crew or adversaries.
No you shut up! They’re my dollies and I’m going to use them… maybe not paint them time will tell.
I’ve got a Wookie, a bunch more saber wielding nutbags and a coughing Cyborg commander with his droid bodyguard, so this should be exciting… I even know where several of those are 😀
Shiver Patrol
So with Star Grave coming up I decided to take a look at two sets of Shivers by Nightfall Games for SLA Industries. I got a set of metals and resins because I wanted to see the difference when Daruma existed and were making them.
I had thought about using them for Enforcers in Deadzone, and in fact Dave also did Enforcer art work for Mantic and they’re so Shiver-like that I thought for a moment that he had drew the original concepts.
Aaaaaaaaaany way, long story short I cleaned up the 21 I had into 4 squads plus coffee drinking captain.
I want to go for quick but at the same time I also wanted to try out oil paints for more than pin washes and tints.
So I started with zenithal highlight and then yellow ink sprayed from above while I used crismon ink from below to give some contrast to the shaded areas, before mixing up a light olive green and blending that over the top.
while it was still slick I then mixed a umber and ochre to get the brown boots and calves as per the pictures.
These went together super fast for tests and I think the next 15 will be as fast as these initial tests before going back to work on the metallics.
