First Framw
Gamma Wolves is one of those games et up for how you want to play. Ash has created something that has made me want to paint some stuff.
So what to go with?
Well i’ve chosen to use Gundam kits as the game is based on base sizes. So im using 4 frames, 3 Mediums that i’m using Gundams for and 1 light frame which i will be using a Warlord Konflict mini, havn’t decided which yet.
So first up is the Lady D. One of the things that Ash spoke about is that it is more like a jetfighter game than anything else, so obviously nose cone art on it.
Also rather than the pristine, the game is based in a post apocalyptic world ive decided to make it look dinged up.
Anyway enjoy.
Next up will be the frames:
Witchcraft
Puck
And one that is as of now unnamed.
Witchcraft
Medium frame 2, hopefully finished tomorrow. Its another 1/144 scale Gunpla kit.
If you care it is the Jegan ECOAS Type kit. It comes with a ridiculous bazooka, but i have decided this will be my fast moving recon frame built on jet mobility rather than a standard walker. So gun and energy close combat weapon, which i will keep stowed on the hip,
As its a recon unit i’ve done the base coats with a lot more grey and blacks to give it not only a stealthy vibe, but to distinguish it from the other units. In a game where you are at most going to have 6 units on the table i think it is worth putting an individual personality into the units. Especially when you think about the tropes of the genre and things like ww2 aircraft.
Anyway here is the WIP basecoats so far.
As a side note, rather than buying 100mm bases i have decided to use plastic cartons and cutting them to size and save the environment a bit.
Witchcraft part 2
So finished.
Things i did with Witchcraft was to avoid the over the top graffiti that Lady D has. This was to give the pilot of the frame a little different personality. So rather than having 13th Jack rabbits, it has JR13. Smaller, more contained, more purposeful. As if the pilot is more ordered.
There is also slightly less dinks in the armour.
I’ve kept the theme of nose cone art going on through this frame. Witchcraft, so a witch….i mean its not subtle. One thing i’m very aware of is that with the pinup art i need to add some male pin up art as there is no way in the far post apoc future the pilots are all male.
So am aiming for 6 frames at the end of this. 3 medium frames, 2 light frames and 1 heavy.
The next medium will be Marylin Monroe, the first light will be Puck, so i think a male Satyr on it. Then i just have to figure out the themes for the other two.
Anyway, enjoy.
Vague planning post along with a ramble around price and gaslands.
So planning.
A campaign game of Gamma Wolves has 6 frames. So far i have 2 done…..
So planning.
Medium Frames:
Witchcraft – below
Lady D – below
A support frame with rockets. I think i am going to theme on marylin Monroe
Light Frames:
Im going to use warlord games Konflict 47 mechs for thease
Puck – using the British Hornet kit. I think it looks like old tech power armour so it will look right. Planning the paint job for this is think the front carapace has lots of room for art so i reckon a satyr is right for this.
Oni – using either the Jackal or the Kodiak. Probably the Kodiak as its the same body as the Hornet, so has a bit more continuity. Giving the light frames that mass produced power armour vibe.
Heavy frames:
Bombshell
For this im using the Gundam Guison Rebake kit. It has extra arms that pop out of the jump packs, which if you don’t put the hands on look like laser cannons. With them coming out of the jump pack it will give the appearance of huge fuel cells that are powering the lasers. Also they bulk out the model making it look heavier.
One thing i have discover is i love the scale of the models. There is something really nice about being able to make and paint something that size that only cost 15 quid. So with the Warlord games figures the total cost will be around £100 for an army. If i was just building to play one off games i could happily just use the 3 frames i have, total cost of £45 plus the book.
Also much like Gaslands, i’m not limited to the almost traditional being locked into a single manufacturer for the game system. Its really liberating. I think this project has also changed my attitude towards models for games. Making me far more manufacturer agnostic.
Gaslands was special because it was adapt your own toy cars, this has a very similar vibe. with the FB group full of different interpretations of what a frame looks like. My favourite being a very studio Ghibli monster like thing made of scrap and nanites.
Anyway those are my plans and late night thoughts around the subject.
Medium frame 'Munroe'
So next medium frame done.
The idea behind this one is the pilot is Marylin ‘Munroe’ Parker. So the pinup art is some red lips and a beauty spot.
Rather than mid fight i have posed it with all the swagger, giving the unit some personality. A pilot that dosn’t care and is all attitude.
I suddenly realised i havn’t said what paint i’m using.
Model colour Reflective green
Model colour Dark Sea green for the dark greys
Model colour German field grey
Give is all a brown wash and then highlight with the same colours, but with added white to lift the colours.
So next? Well a small frame. I picked up another gundam kit that has a small version and an up armoured version. The Vee two i belive. Well after a tiny bit of fiddling and not using the up armour, it is about half the size of the bigger gundams.
So that plan? it went out the window. now i will have one Konflikt light and one gundam light.
As to my heavy? suggestions below please!
Light frame oni
So plans go wrong. I was aiming for Konflikt 47 for my lights, however i picked up a Core Gundam on a whim….
So Core Gundam kits have a little Gundam that has arm and leg parts that turn it into a large one. Still at 1/144 scale it means it fits perfectly on a 50mm base, which makes it perfect for a light frame.
The other thing is that the ability to pose makes the whole figure pop once you get it on the base, with loads of bits left over for conversions.
One of the things that is leaping out at the moment is that i want to paint something not green….so i will be making a pair for this for teaching games. However i still have a second light and my heavy frame to complete. Well they are complete, but i’ll put them up one at a time.
Jack Rabbit
So every Anime show needs a cute character. This is my second light frame. Originally it was going to be called Puck. However with the legs and back plate it reminded me of something that didn’t walk but bounded.
So story time. In my head its the first frame the Jack Rabbits owned, it got nicknamed Rabbit. Then their name came after it. They keep it around. Even though its less technically advanced and relying on heavy plates for protection, its a reliable frame and a mascot.
The front plate screamed for a face and ears, so it got it. Rather than putting all the guns in i kept the outside recess’ as ‘eyes’.
All in all it has the vibe of the cute mascot in an Anime show, but with the weathering and colouring of something like Ghost in the Shell SAC or Iron Blooded Orphans.
Enjoy.
The last one! Bomb Shell
So i needed a heavy frame, So here is BombShell!
I chose the kit because between the bell bottoms and the huge extra arms it has a huge presence!
Also with the extra arms you can pose them so it looks like they are following the main frames own arms for extra cool factor!
Fluff wise its a pair of lasers with close combat weapons. The idea being they are effectively industrial laser cutters that have been up gunned for combat.
So this is almost the end of the project! I have just the group photo to do.
And done!
So i have finished the project. Woot woot indeed.
So what have i learned?
I like the scale of Gundam kits and that they are a joy to assemble.
Going forwards i think if i was to redo this project i think i would have added more scenic bases.
You can convert them, but you need some spare kits.
The sheer ability to pose the kits is amazing and really allows you to go to town.
I am less likly to care about official figures for games from now on!
I really enjoyed it as a project. Now i need to get back to my battle tech and my Grendles brood.
