About the Project
Working towards some games of Frostgrave, I have been charged with building and painting a warband. The Wizard in question is a Chronomancer and is supported by a band of Thieves, Thugs, Archers and a Ranger.

The Chronomancer Warband
Here is how the Chronomancer Warband breaks down…
- Wizard
- Apprentice
- 3x Thugs
- 2x Thieves
- 2x Archers
- Ranger
The focus behind the Chronomancer is that they are a caster of magic spells based around time manipulation with spells like…
Fleet Feet, Petrify, Decay, Elemental Ball (Elementalist), Drain Life (Necromancer), Combat Awareness (Soothsayer), Leap (Summoner) and Mud (Witch).
To this end, I considered that a Chronomancer might team up with a bunch of dextrous individuals to go and steal the treasures of Felstad rather than simply battling for them.
So, the warband is one of tricksy thieves, backstabbers and more. This is why I’ve got so many archers in the group alongside the Thieves, Thugs and Ranger. It seemed to fit the idea of time-manipulation treasure hunters.
Making The Warband
North Star Military Figures have a massive array of different plastic sets to use when building a Frostgrave warband now so I went with options from the Male & Female Soldiers plastic kits plus the Male & Female Wizards sets.
My idea is that I would build a warband which uses the more typical Frostgrave adventurers whilst Gerry and Warren are focusing on more thematic warbands based around Cultists and Barbarians.
This is the array of different miniatures I’ve made using the plastic kits that were on offer…
The Chronomancer (left) is holding an hourglass which I thought was quite fitting, made using the bitz from the sprue and then I have her more wild and dangerous Apprentice waving around a sword and carrying all the bags of ingredients. I couldn’t miss out on adding a magical cat into the mix too!
Here are the rest of the miniatures from the warband starting with Archers…
…followed by the Thugs.
…and the Thieves
This is capped off by the Ranger who is going to be making a lot of the strikes against some of the more dangerous elements of the other warbands.
This brings together the ten elements of this warband which I will be painting up soon.
I have been thinking about colour schemes and I think that I’m going to go with blue or purple for the Chronomancer and her Apprentice and then just going motley with the others!
I am tempted to work purple into their outfits at some point though to show their allegiance to the Chronomancer. Maybe a sash or something here and there to represent their links to this spellcaster.
Basecoated Warband - Making Things Blue!
So – with the warband all decided upon I thought I should get stuck into doing some painting ahead of some things we’ve got planned for the future.
Here is how they all looked once they had their basecoat down. There is a lot of blue and many shades of brown that’s for sure!
I quite like how all of the main block colours came out. It is a little samey but I was painting these quite quickly and I think I managed to get a lot of core colours down without it looking too “one-note”.
Finished Warband With Appropriate Wintery Basing!
Here is the final collection of images showing off the finished warband. I applied a wash to all of the miniatures here and then did a bit of highlighting. The Wizard & Apprentice got the most work in terms of highlighting and shading.
The rest of the miniatures in the warband were painted with basecoat as shown below and then given a little bit of extra detail work around their faces just to make them stand out.
The Thugs were presented as looking a bit slapdash. I liked the lady who was carting around that big bag of loot and the woman who is clearly drinking her way through some forgotten alcohol they have found in the ruins.
You’ve also got the cunning looking Thieves who are stepping up to the plate. I did both a male and female option for this warband.
We also have some nice miniatures painted up for the two Archers in the warband and the Ranger who is going to be upstaging them at every turn I reckon!
In terms of basing, I worked in a big bunch of snow since this is Frostgrave and then did a little bit of grass over the top to make it look like it’s not all just massive snowdrifts everywhere!
I would normally have added some tufts and such into the mix here too but I think it looks nice as a plain set of bases.
There is still a LOT of miniatures left within the different plastic kits that I got from North Star and I am very eager to try and tinker with them some more to make additional characters for Frostgrave warbands AND maybe something for Rangers Of Shadow Deep too.
