About the Project

I got Batman: Gotham City Chronicles as part of the Season 2 kickstarter and have decided it is now time to get paint of those figures.

This Project is Completed

So I’ve decided to start with Batman (well a Batman) and some of his closest allies.  In this case we are going to get paint on Red Robin, Batgirl (Barbara Gordon), Nightwing and Batwoman.  A bit of research first into what colours to use:

Having spent time researching I decided that I was going to make one variation from the research previously and that was to paint the inside of Batgirls cloak purple rather than yellow.  I made a decission to try and return to standard paints and minimise my use of contrast paints for the main characters (we’ll see how that goes).  Having watch a few tutorials on “Watch it Paint it” I decided to paint the blacks from AP’s Necromancer Cloak, followed by AP’s Dark Tone and then highlight with Necromancer Clock, AP’s Uniform Gray.  For Batman’s outfit I started with Uniform Grey, then a Strong Tone, followed by highlights from Uniform Grey and Vallejo’s Sky Grey.  I think the blacks have come out okay.

I am particularly happy with Red Robin’s wings.  These started with a base of AP’s Chaotic Red, a Wash of AP’s Red Tone, then drybrushing Vampire Red, Dragon Red (both AP) and then a touch of Orange and Yellow to finish highlighting.

I haven’t put detail on the bases and just left them Uniform Grey with a Blue rim as Hero’s are blue in the game.

Next onto the painting table are the 8 standard GCPD miniatures.  I’m going with a dark blue for most of this one and going with contrast and these are generic characters.

Time to paint up some Robins, whilst only two of these characters are dressed in the colours of Robin they have all been Robin once in the comic books.  So I present Tim Drake (Robin – with inside on his cape), Damien Wayne (Robin), Stephanie Brown (Spoiler in this case) and Jason Todd (Red Hood).  I went a bit further with highlighting on these guys, and really happy with how the purple came out on Stephanie Brown.

I cracked on with some more of the heros this week.  I’m pretty happy with them, although the highlight on Catwoman maybe a little on the light side.

Still we have Katana (I still need to improve on painting white), Catwoman, Green Arrow and Orphan (Cassandra Cain).

My boys suddenly decided that they wanted to do some painting with me and they wanted to paint the T-Rex from the Batman set.  Well between them they did such a good job I got them to paint the drones as well.

For T-Rex he was primed in AP Army Green, then a Wash with Green Tone and then with Strong Tone.  We then dry brushed back up from Army Green.  The nails and teeth are GW Wraith Bone with Skeleton Bone Contrast over the top.  The eyes are red (the boys choice).

For the Drone they were primed GW Black, then dry brushed Vellejo Chainmail, then Steel, with the eyes all painted in red.

Whilst they did that I focussed on some more heros and we have Azreal, Duke, Catwoman, Black Canary and Batman (Zero Year).

So I finished up the Prison Guards with a quick paint scheme.  Leviadon Blue Contrast for the most part.  Decided to try a drybrush over the top, think I got it right with P3 Menoth White Highlight.

Also finished up Oracle, Alfred Pennyworth, Batwing and Julia Pennyworth, most of these are part of the Wayne Manor set.

I painted up the SWAT guys along with Jim Gordon, Harvey Bullock and Renee Montoya and Bruce Waynes himself (not as Batman).

I experimented a little with the medium for the contrast and mixed some into Leviadon Blue for the SWAT team and into Black Templar for Bruce Wayne and he suit.  Really happy with how it came out for Bruce.  Went back in with some Black Templar straight out of the pot to darken the shadows further.  The SWAT Team look okay.

Time to paint some Bats, in this case the Batswarms (4), Batman of Moscow, Batman Year 100 and Blue Bird.

The bat swarms were painted with Black Templar (slightly thinned), with Leviadon Blue at the bottom.  There were finished with a dry brush of Vallejo Sky Grey.

The Batman figures blacks were painted in the same ways as the Bats, I’ve got comfortable with this, shadows were picked out with a second coat of Black Templar as well.

It’s been a productive week, but why is it only when I take the photographs I notice the dots.  They look good enough for the game to me.

The last of the GCPD SWAT Team miniatures, with the Heavy SWAT with Shield and the SWAT with Briefcase.  Main colour is Contrast Leviadon Blue slightly watered down, with a dry brush of Vallejo Sky Grey over the top.

The end of the Gotham Hero figures is getting closer, thanks to a productive half term for me.  More pictures to come.

I really think I’ve started to get a hanlde on painting black now.  Working with a grey undercoated, then thinned Black Templar, then hitting the shadows with unthinned black templar.  I finished these guys off with a drybrush of Sky Grey.

The Yellow bat symbol on the bots giving a brief flash of colour, nothing like it for the Armoured Batsuit.

Chief Man-of-bats the sking looks much darker on the photograph.  Used thinned Skeleton Horde on the feathers and the Blood Angels Red on the End.  Next to him we have Knight, used Vallejo Metalic Black for the armour plates on him with a dry brush of Chainmail.  The Dark Knight in the middle (I think the dots are coming from my Anti-shine (can’s nearly empty).  Night runner.  The Dark Ranger in the white outfit, which is actually Menoth White Highlight with Apothecary White painted over the top – came out quite well.  Finally El Gaucho.

So having finished the first box I thought I’d complete the overflow box which is mostly the Suicide Squad Figures.  So tonight I present to you Bronze Tiger, Rick Flagg, Amanda Waller, Black Manta and Joker’s Daughter, with Hugo Strange as an interloper in the background.

I’m particularly pleased with the fur on Bronze Tiger, used a Wraithbone Primer, Iyanden Yellow and then Black Templer stripes.  Overall I really like Joker’s Daughter as a model and had to dig out some old paints to get the skirts, top and leggings.

Riddle me this, riddle me that, who's afraid of the big, black bat?
