About the Project

I have mentioned before on my Chaos All Stars 2018 project my love of Blood Bowl. When I got back into collecting and painting miniatures after a long hiatus, it was one of the first things I decided to start collecting. Initially it was just to fulfil a childhood dream of having the Chaos All Stars, but I am not going to lie, it's gotten a bit out of hand. At current count I have about 11 completed teams, and that's before anything new gets released for Blood Bowl Season 2. This project isn't really going to be a huge painting tutorial, but more just focusing on the different teams I have collected, and where I have picked up some star players etc.

I have to admit from the moment I saw this on Warhammer Community I loved this miniature.

Ben (not OTT’s Ben but another Ben – what is it about the world of hobby that draws Ben’s inexplicably to it?) on the Bonehead Podcast believes this mini was sculpted by the guy who use to be Winzor Chog. For those that don’t know Winzor Chog was a 3rd party company producing Blood Bowl minis. Sadly I never got to buy any before the owner went to work for GW.

Anyway, regardless of all of that, this is super fun.

I don’t normally go on about how I painted stuff on this project, I leave that to my Golden Button* winning Primarch Project, but I thought it was worth mentioning how i cocked this up.

I followed Forgeworld’s recipe for the flesh.

Screamer Pink, Drakenhof Nightshade, Pink Horror.

However my Pink Horror highlights on the left arm were so bad it almost caused me to reach for the nail polish remover and start again. In stead what I did was wash the arm in Carroborg Crimson, and then volpus pink contrast. I think it saved it.

*shameless self promotion that may go on for a long time now

Currently away with work but I am informed that my Norse Team has arrived.

Will upload pics and where I got them all from next week!

Now I just need to watch some videos on ice and snow basing…

So, what we have done so far is under coat these fella’s in Corax White.

Gulliman flesh on most of them – highlighted with Kislev Flesh.

A couple I did with Darkoath Flesh (Darkwolf and Conan). Then highlighted those two up with Cadian Flesh tone and then Kislev Flesh.

A bit of blue on them and that’s as far as we got!

Norse

So the Ulfwerners are a mix of Willy Miniatures and Meiko

Norse

The linemen are from Goblin Guild and mainly purchased due to Conan and Darkwolf!

Norse

The Thrower and Runner / Catchers are from Meiko

Norse

The Blitzers / Berserkers are also from Meiko.

Next up probably get another thrower, there is one from Goblin Guild who looks ok, and a Snow Troll. That we will definitely be getting from Greebo Games.

They do an enormous weird looking one called Juma!

I know BB has many many forums where people discuss its merits / tactics / teams and miniatures.

But I wanted to start one here on OTT.

So for anyone interested in discussing all things Blood Bowl, why not join in here:

All kinds of everything remind me of Blood Bowl!

Thanks!

Went into a contrast paint frenzy on this.

Dakoath Flesh in patches and Gulliman Flesh for the skin.

Then Magos purple on the lower parts of its body.

Volpus Pink on the tentacles.

Then we have painted the boils with Yriel Yellow and wash them over with Plague Bearer Flesh.

I think it looks suitable rancid at this point!

More work on this, to be honest its pretty much done at this stage – bar the number.

I like it. A liberal application of Nurgle’s Rot on the base to have some stuff leaking out of the tail – weird!

When thinking about my Blood Bowl collection, I have tried to imagine each team as a living breathing entity, some will be hugely successful and can afford the best kit, stadium and players. Others not so much.

So for the relaunched Middenheim Marauders I imagine them being a more modest club.

With that in mind they have hired Helmut Wulf!

Managed to recall his name!

this is where we are with him so far, a liberal use of contrast paints have really speeded up my Blood Bowl painting game!

Painted him up just like the rest of my Champions of Death team.

Work so far on Skrull – Just got the elf arm he is carrying to finish really.

I really enjoyed painting him, contrast really sorted out the bone, as opposed to using Ushbati -Agrax-Ushbait-Screaming Skull.

Might still add some Dark Reaper highlights to the armour.

But I am happy.

These are from Hungry Troll, as mentioned before the Chaos Dwarves are a bit small compared to GW’s current Dwarf team.

You had the choice of a few different heads so I opted for all the tall hat heads!

They look ok overall, I quite like the weird little Hobgoblin sculpts. The one with big red hair being my favourite!

When I started this project I said it wasn’t going to be a painting tutorial but more a guide to where to get miniatures to “spice” up your teams.

Well since then my collection of Blood Bowl related nonsense has grown (alarmingly so!) – just today I took delivery of a Lizardman pitch…

At the same time I bought that pitch, ordered a Chaos Dwarf team from Hungry Troll miniatures.

Nice casts, figures are a tad small when compared to GW Dwarf’s but they will do.

I have also order – Frank N Stein, Helmut Wulf, a Rotspawn, and the undead dwarf thrower (his name escapes me right now).

I have also bought a Cathay Themed Imperial Nobility team and have my eyes on another team which would work as Brettonian’s – RN Estudos.

So, with all of these, what next? Well… I drew up a league table.

Two conferences – Eight divisions – 5 teams in each.

Auld World Football Conference

Northern Division

  • The Gouged Eye – Orcs
  • The Chaos All Stars – Chaos Pact
  • Elfheim Eagles – Elven Union
  • Skavenblight Scramblers – Skaven
  • Skulls of Katam – Chaos Chosen

Western Division

  • Ironcrag Decimators – Black Orcs
  • Dwarf Giants – Dwarf
  • Sylvannian Ravens – Vampire
  • Bright Crusaders – Human
  • Greenfield Grasshuggers

Eastern Division

  • Darkside Cowboys – Dark Elves
  • The Champions of Death – Shambling Undead
  • Reikland Reavers – Human
  • Nurgle’s Rotters – Nurgle
  • Middenheim Marauders – OWA

Central Division

  • Athelorn Avengers – Wood Elves
  • Oldheim Ogres – Ogres
  • Orcland Raiders – Orcs
  • Lowdown Rats – Goblins
  • Snottingham Snot Sniffles – Snotlings

New World Football Conference

Northern Division

  • Khemri Tomb Kings – Khemri
  • Underworld Creepers – Underworld Denziens
  • Ostermark Dukes – Imperial Nobility
  • Banewood Werewolves – Necromantic
  • Lustria Croakers – Lizardmen

Eastern Division

  • Averheim Lions – OWA
  • Artic Cragspiders – Norse
  • Zhar-Zaggrund Ziggurats – Chaos Dwarf
  • The Mongrel Horde – Chaos Pact
  • Jlaxonkill Jaguars – Amazon

Western Division

  • The Crimson Cadavers – Necromantic
  • Galadreith Gladiators – Elven Union
  • Shang-Yang Dragons – Cathay / Imperial Nobility
  • Craggen Counts – Vampire
  • Grasgar Truebloods – Brettonian / Imperial Noblity

Central Division

  • Vynheim Valkyries – Norse
  • Gisoreux Lionhearts – Brettonian / Imperial Noblity
  • ?
  • ?
  • ?

So… just three more teams to decide upon.

As for the ones I need to buy its around 12 out of the 40 I need. Not bad!?! or mad!?! you decide!

Loved painting this miniature.

Was a joy and it turned out so well – sometimes simple is best.

Undercoat of corax white.

Washed the whole mini in Agrax Earthshade.

Dry brush of corax white – using a big old paint brush I had left over from when I used to paint on canvas!

Then some highlights with White Scar.

Done.

The Forgeworld mini is clad in full Champions of Death painted armour, but I wanted my Gretchen to just be a ghost – I also treated the ball on her base as a ghost as she has the “no hands skill” so cannot pick up a ball in game.

Plus by doing her ghost white it meant she can easily play on any BB team that allows and she won’t stand out.

Picked up this fella on Ebay for about 15 quid then discovered I could have got him and the Black Gobbo for a similar price of Forgeworld ….

Just going to paint him up like a Dwarf Giant.

I have also finished Gretchen Watcher – need to take a pic – she was a joy to paint.

Then I need to base my Elven Union team – my snotling team have stalled above and beyond using Plague Bearer flesh on them!

Right I have bought an Elven Union Team and a Snotling Team.

The Elves are coming along nicely, but I cheated on the Snotlings and used Plaguebearer flesh contrast!

Pics to follow!

Was having a spy on ebay and came across Grombindal The White Dwarf in Blood Bowl.

Thinking this was a mini that was unavailable I banged in a bid.

A few hours later I have secured him for £16.

Bargain methinks.

However looking on Forgeworld on an unrelated matter – Night Lords Contemptakor Terminators – I realised you can buy both the White Dwarf and the Black Gobbo for 21 pounds.

ARSE.

Lesson here is Ebay isn’t always the bargain you think its going to be!

I said this project wasn’t going to be much of an attempt at a painting tutorial, but I couldn’t help myself talking a bit about the paint job on this model.

Step 1.

Lots of Brown!!!

Actually, there are lots of colours full stop.

We had Dryad Bark, then layers of baneblade brown and gorthor brown.

The face has a few glazes of Rakarth Flesh just to bring out the detail there.

Birds nest and eggs in his crown. Guliman Flesh and Kislev flesh.

Leaves are jokero orange, reikland flesh shade, and ork flesh contrast with some warpstone glow.

Skeletons dotted about ushabit bone, agrax earthshade, screaming skull.

Mushrooms, mephiston red, agrax earthshade, then layers of wild rider red. I dotted it with white scar.

The Forgeworld picture of this doesn’t do it justice its a wonderful model in person and was a joy to paint.

Right since I last updated this (Jan 2021).

We have finished:

  • Deeproot Strongbranch
  • My Black Orc Team
  • My Imperial Nobility Team
  • My Halfling Team
  • My Dark Elf Team
  • Gretchen Watcher
  • My Chaos Chosen Team
  • My Lizardman Team
  • My underworld Denizens Team
  • A Troll for my Underworld Denizens
  • An enormous proxy mini for Glart Smashrip which I am going to use as just a fat Skaven for my Underworld Denizens

I will get some pics uploaded either Tomorrow or Friday 9th April.

I have also ordered a Snotling Team and a High Elf Team.

If I hadn’t of bought Warhammer Quest Cursed City I would have picked up a Norse Team as well!

So far I have 24 Teams!

I just need to put the bloody transfers on a lot of them!

However in order to replicate the old style Blood Bowl conferences I would still need to buy / build / paint 8 more teams!

In addition to all of that I also have about 19 pitches and about 12 of the custom dice sets.

I could literally set up my own league and run multiple games at once (Covid Permitting)

So, I am not just obsessed with buying and painting all of the teams, I also picked up the star players when time & budget permits!

Got this fella today and spent a bit of time cleaning him and sticking it all together.

As is sometimes the case with ForgeWorld stuff a liberal smearing of green stuff and plastic putty is required to fill in the gaps.

I am pleased with him, and somewhat surprised at how massive it is.

Got a halfling team as well, so I will probably paint him to match those.
