About the Project

The Kharadron Overlords seemed like an odd faction when they appeared in AoS to me. They looked too Sci-fi, for my taste, in a fantasy setting. They did look very cool though, but the price point was too high to consider it as a faction for me to make an army from, so I lost interest. I recently skipped through the OTT shadespire range and decided just painting a few of these cool models would be a short fun project and i would actually be able to play with them afterwards.

The iffy start.

I ran out of my Army Painter black primer with the first pass of the can. It felt like there was enough in the can for just 5 models but there was some clogging and I didn’t want a mess trying to get a few more passes of paint.

The official GW video on how to paint this Nightvault expansion suggested a Leadbelcher primer. I don’t have that, but I had some pound shop black primer and a cheap silver spray paint I only expected to use on terrain. The black primer didn’t come out particularly well in comparison to my better sprays and the zenith I attempted with the silver came out quite heavy sadly.

Khazgan Drakkskewer

I enjoyed painting Khazgan Drakkskewer. I had to dry brush some of the iffy priming with Leadbelcher belcher to give me a stronger starting point.

I enjoyed experimenting with Shyish Purple on the overalls and trying to find a theme. The golds are a mix of Retributor Gold and Army Painter Weapon Bronze. I hit several areas, gold and metal with a bright Citadel silver.

Using the Turquoise Contrast paint on the gems on the base came out well. I will use the same blue on some pipes, because I imagine that not everything will be linked by metal pipes and its a nice cold contrast against the warm gold.

I like the bases for all of these minis. I have seen examples where people had lava dribbling out of these vents, but to me they look more like the super deep water white vents on documentaries I have seen. The floating Khazgan with his skypike looked like an early deep sea diver to my wife and I have to agree. So I went with the white patterned vents in the end.

The base was just stones on this guy so I dirtied up one low area with Mournfang Brown and dry brushed the majority of it back to Grey Seer like all the other bases.

The pose is great on this guy and the scheme from the other minis translated well on the Enrik i think.

It wasn’t until I had gotten quite deep into the paint job that I realised that the face breathing apparatus on the right of his face wasn’t just extended, but was in fact a pipe. I find it funny when things like that crop up. ?

This was a nice set of miniatures to paint and will be nice to play with at some point.

Not sure I would want to paint an army of Kharadron Overlords for AoS, but glad I leant that now with only a small outlay.

I’ve had fun with this project and feel I have had my money’s worth already.

The Shyish Purple is a great Contrast Paint and I look forward to finding other projects where this colour will be of use.

Thanks for the likes. ?
