Trewets and Caileendeas’s Thousand Sons Journey

About the Project
My better half @caileendeas saw the starter army box for The Thousand Sons when we were over to BOW/OTT some time ago. This is the journey we are both making with this Chaos chapter( I know a fair amount of the fluff and she really likes the paint scheme/colours.) So the target is to build and paint the starter box to field a reasonable army for a future game. Then adding more squads as and when they are acquired.

More reinforcements
Father Christmas’s flea bay found some terminators for the army!
Basing whatever!
The base of a figure can make or break the look of a figure.
Did one rubic with a plain black base but this did not seem to compliment the paint job.
Gathered together some other figures we have already based and a trial on a spare base with some blue stones and red tuft ( Helena had a brain wave the other day)
Now we just have to decide which one or mix of them to use…….women are renowned for changing their minds and let it not be said that Helena is any different. LOL ?
MORE!!
The E-Bay gods we’re good to Helena last week.
1 Helbrute to add to the army list.
He /she was a bit camera shy and has jumped straight into a meths bath with the rhinos before you get to see the shocking paint job.LOL.
photos will follow once it is presentable.
Army List tinkering
So yesterday (Saturday) took a leisurely drive to Bromley to have a quick look around the new Troll Trader shop. It is more a retail outlet for the games that TT combat produce and some hobby supplies than a second hand army shop like their online presence. So be warned. That said the staff were SUPER friendly, very approachable and very knowledgeable in most aspects of the hobby, including genres outside the TT combat umbrella.
Picked up a couple of Kromlech “Gatling “ style guns as swaps/proxy reaper cannons for the SONS. See pics below.
So the army list so far
Ahriman on disc
1 Tzeentch Demon Prince
1 exhalted sorcerer
3 squads of eight rubic marines, one warp flame thrower and one reaper cannon and one aspiring sorcerer
1 squad of nine warp flame throwers and one reaper cannon and aspiring sorcerer
1 squad of Tzaangors and one bray.
1 Helbrute
1 chaos spawn (being used for this army and death guard)
3 Tzaangor shamans
2 dedicated rhino transports
Better photos
To get better photos of the army Helena got a light box, with colour backgrounds.
Above are test photos to see how the lighting changes
There are a few surprises on how the camera sees the figure in different coloured light that the background reflects.
The marines get a ride
A ride for the marines to carry the rubric marines into battle, OH make that 2
Helena is not happy how the Rhino’s paint job has turned out so will be stripping them and starting again.
In the past Helena and I have tried,
Isopropanyl , Detol , white spirit ,Nitromors to strip paint from miniatures
some of the above chemicals are so harsh and the smells as bad and they cannot be used with resign or plastic miniatures.
We have found the best stipper of acrylic paint is Methylated Spirit. It is cheaper than the other products, has a somewhat present smell, does not get used up by the stripping process and does not harm any resign or plastic. Some scrubbing with a toothbrush to agitate the paint from the miniature is necessary!
One draw back is that it does evaporate if the container is left open.
The Warp answers the all powerful Ahriman
The arch sorcerer calls forth aid from the Warp, the screamers sally out.
So the army grows
Another marine squad added to the army with head swaps.
3 Tzaangors shamans on discs are added to the army!
Another addition to the army after a late night talk about what could support the army best and a surprise present is a demon prince.
A few kit bashed exalted sorcerers with trial paint schemes and decals.
More Gravitas
The Tzaangors are very light weight miniatures Helena wanted more Gravitas to the models so we glued two pence pieces to the bases.
Reinforcements already!
Helena(Caileendeas) already had a unit of 30k marines for another army build but after discussing the fluff that the Thousand Sons are warriors of the long war she wanted to add them into the list.
The heads were swapped out for Thousand Son heads purchased on flea bay.
A quick conversion to give a reaper cannon to the unit and the first idea for a colour scheme…..not finalised.
Figures built and primed....and base colour
So spent a long weekend building and priming the starter set….I have lost and or deleted the build photos…..then Caileendeas put a base colour on to try and see what colours she wanted the army.
The miniatures were primed with army painter silver primer and the base colour is Talassar blue contrast, this gives a metallic look to the power armour. The Tzaangors were given one coat of aethermatic blue, this gave a greener colour to differentiate them from the rubric marines.
Starting point
So a quick look at the starter box art and contents.
