About the Project

I have recently been somewhat inspired to return to Mordheim. To that end, I thought I'd build a project looking at prospective miniatures for some of the warbands in the game which work around similar themes and aesthetics.

For the Witch Hunters, it was going to be a little interesting as they had to have a specific vibe to them. I looked at just making them out of the Flagellants from Games Workshop (a good option) and then bringing in Witch Hunters from various ranges (like Avatars Of War)…but, then I found the Gripping Beast models.

I think this Grand Commander would make an excellent leader miniature and then the various Hexenjager that are available for Age Of Magic work very well alongside him since they match him in terms of proportions and style (to a degree).

They would work as your Witch Hunters plus your more bedraggled followers who wander along behind Witch Hunter warbands.

You might have to go looking elsewhere for war hounds and the like but in the main, this seems like a good idea to get you started.

You can see them in their webstore here https://www.grippingbeast.co.uk/product-filter/category-tree,saga-products-1/saga-age-of-magic,great+kingdoms

For Marienburger miniatures I thought I’d look at the collection from MOMminiaturas who has been doing some great miniatures for Oldhammer/Warhammer players over the past few years.

Marienburger Warband

As well as the Paymaster-esque miniature above which is very Marienburger there are plenty more miniatures within their Sons Of The Griffon range.

All of the miniatures above feel like they would be a great fit being that little bit more over-the-top compared to other miniatures out there in a similar vein.

This selection was also one that brought up two different ways of building a warband. Do you make the roster then choose miniatures to fit that OR do you buy a handful of miniatures and then make a warband from that?

I am becoming more interested in the second option nowadays. I like the idea of buying miniatures you like and then working from there rather than trying to match some “meta” or what might be “best”. I much prefer just picking the coolest individuals and trying to make it work for you – through the good and the ill.

I’ve been talking about Mordheim a lot lately with friends and online and so thought I’d look at some miniatures which would be good options for those diving into the game and in search of Oldhammer-esque miniatures without paying out the nose on eBay.

To that end, here is some of the miniatures I thought would work really well for Reiklanders in the game.

They have that martial look to them and come from an Ex-Games Workshop sculptor/creative so they have that look and feel to their design. There are a good amount of neat elite and regular characters amongst their collection, albeit without many ranged options just yet for their Marksmen.

The Breninmoor range from Black Scorpion looks like it’s going to be expanding over the next few months so it’s worth bookmarking their page to see what else comes out.

For black powder options, I am tempted by their Pirates for Cutlass as they’d probably match up well if required.
