About the Project

So, this project might not be as long as my other ones, as I think the characterful element is somewhat limited, but here goes.... As I have mentioned in my Primarchs project, my favourite Primarch and probably favourite character in the GrimDark universe is Konrad Curze. So it seemed only fair that after months and months of reading all of the materials - books / short stories - featuring Curze I get around to giving him a legion. Not that he would approve of that of course! So without further a do "Ave Dominus Nox" I give you my Night Lords.

Now, as you can see from the pose and the detailing, I think this has really just been a rescan and a resize of the FW model – sorry Games Workshop I didn’t know when I bought it! – however one area where it is totally different is the unhelmeted head.

Which is a bit cartoony. However, I like it. So I put in a lot of work on the face.

  • Rakarth Flesh
  • Reikland Flesh Shade
  • Rakarth Flesh
  • Berserker Bloodshade around the mouth
  • Druchi Violet around the eyes

He also comes with his helmet, so I can magnetise these and swap them out depending upon my mood.

The rest of the model, basically follows same process as the Curze bust.

Well, with Big Konrad finally finished, the next logical thing to do is to paint the other Night Lord Bust I own….Sevatar.

Here you can see him freshly base coated.

I have also magnetised the head and the helmet so I can swap them out depending upon my mood.

So, what with the duplicate posting of this, I also lost the text.

Anyway. Just for completeness here is how I painted the rest of Konrad.

The lightning Claws.

Wow, this was a major investment in time – I watched many a Youtube video on how to do a lovely shimmer effect.

  • So, we base coated the claws with Stegadon Scale Green.
  • I then glazed 3 3rds of his claws with Sotek Green.
  • I then glazed it again, with shorter pass of Thunderhawk blue.
  • Then we moved to a shorter glaze of Fenrisan Grey.
  • Then we had a tiny glaze of Ulthuan Glaze
  • Then we added an edge highlight of White Scar.

We then varnished the claws with a gloss varnish to add a shine to them.

Right, getting into this now.

Undercoated the rest of him now – he has some huge shoulder pauldrons!

Anyway, dry brushed the Gehenna’s gold with Liberator gold, then ran some Agrax Earthshade around the rivets in the armour, then highlighted those with Storm host silver.

The armour with he lightened up in a few places with Caledor Sky and Teclis Blue.

I have then added a bit of white scar to the teclis blue just to try and give it a subtle spot highlight where the light would hit it.

The other side of his armour is still largely just Kantor blue, I may add a glaze of Caledor Sky to it to brighten it up slightly, but I want that side of him to remain in shadow.

That’s serving two purposes, its emphasising the light source coming from above him and to his right, and its also emphasising the darkness within Curze and the darkness of his legion.

Added the cape on him as well.

Just some Khorne red on the cape and some kislev flesh on the skin bits.

Then added him to his plinth, it looks a bit weird as having him directly sat on the plinth would have had him jutting off at a weird angle!

But I like it.

Looking great from a distance! Up close still a bit stratchy!

I think I am going to have to pin his armours and pauldrons on as his arm with the lightning claws is massive and double the weight with the pauldron.

Right, so after my time away at the Full Beard Cup in Nottingham, I have now began work on painting the first of my Night Lord Busts.

So, this is the work in progress on Big Konrad.

I am using the standard formula that I used on my Konrad Curze Primarch model.

Undercoat of Chaos Black spray.

For the armour.

Kantor Blue. The trim is painted in Gehenna’s Gold (which rival’s Auric Armour Gold as the worst paint). Then I have blocked out the rib cage part and the various vents and exhausts of his power armour in leadbelcher.

The face.

Undercoat of Rakarth Flesh. Then I have ran magos purple mixed with with some contrast medium around his mouth, eyes, nose, and the various cuts and lines in his face.

I then highlighted the skin with Palid Wych Flesh.

The highlights were far to bright at this point, so I mixed up some Rakarth Flesh with some contrast medium and washed that all over his face.

From there we painted his eyes white. Ran some Nuln Oil gloss over them, then painted in his eyes pretty much just black. I wanted to leave a little bit of white around them, but that hasn’t worked.

I than ran some Drakehof Nightshade thinned down with water over the lower half of his face, and around the hair line.

For a final bit of colour, I ran some berserker blood shade around his lips, around his eyes, and on the tip of his nose – because for some reason the cover art of his Primarch book seems to have a bit of a red nose – which I just thought looked adorable!

Now, from a distance his face looks awesome, but up close the highlights are still to bright after all that correcting, so I am going to have to do something about that!

I think I am going to get some Rakarth Flesh and stipple it around the highlights to try and blend it in a bit more.

Right, I haven’t done anything Night Lordy for awhile, however plans continue in the background.

  • I have bought some Atramentar specific paludrons for my Cataphractii terminators
  • But even more wacky than that, I have been working with a fella on ETSY to 3D print some Night Lord busts!

I also have my eye on some black wooden Plinths for these 2 to sit on.

I am looking forward to painting a huge great Konrad Curze face!

UPDATE

I am informed that Sev and Konrad are in the post….

UPDATE

Both have now arrived. I had to do a bit of work straightening Curze’s lightning claws, but apart from that both look awesome.

I have also ordered a pair of plinths from Green Stuff World. Once they arrive we can get these two undercoated and begin work!

Also (not related to these busts) but I saw Valrak on the Youtube rumouring away about Night Lord upgrade kits coming soon…my word between the Horus Heresey Miniatures I still need to build from the Age of Darkness box set, MKIII armours I want to buy and one can only assume a new MKIV armour at some point, I maybe painting Midnight Blue for years to come!

All quiet on this for awhile now, but some updates.

  • I have ordered the HH upgrade Kits for my MKVI Night Lords
  • I have also found my 10 Forgeworld Terror Squad heads
  • I also have an HH Night Lord Praetor
  • Artel W Miniatures have announced they are relaunching the Dread Squad range – minus (one would assume) the deliberate ADB characters – so I will be ordering some of those.

Once I finish the outstanding Blood Bowl Star Players, and build up to tackling Ka Bandha, I will get the MKVI’s from the HH boxset on the go.

Finally...

Night Lord MK VI upgrades

Well it’s nice to get something at least.

Here’s hoping we get another HQ model.

I still hope to see Gendor Skraivok  the Painted Count in the coming months.

Sad (but I suppose not unexpected) news

Recent update by Artel W Miniatures has confirmed something I suspected had to happen.

GW Have come For You.

They are ceasing production of their Dread Squad range.

Let’s be honest the first mini they did The Dread Lord was clearly always going to infringe on GW IP.

They only went and made this worse by producing 100% accurate versions of ADB’s Night Lords.

So it was only a matter of time before these got noticed!

I am glad I have picked up the minis while I could and am sorry to see an end to these. We might not get their Cyrion and we definitely aren’t getting a Xarl!

I will just have to stick to some of my First Claw minis and wait and see if Uzas turns up.

RIP Dread Lord’s we barely knew you. But we did know who you were….

No sooner has Uzas gone up for sale than they drop a WIP render of Cyrion.

Artel’s first 3d render of Uzas.

No skin cape – which I can live with.

And maybe switch out the helmet for a GW MKIII.

But he looks awesome just like the rest of them!

Uzas V.2

The big lad is now up for sale at Artel W.

And what makes it more exciting is he does come with his skin cape!

I still think I might swap out his head(s) for a GW Mark 3 helmet, but the one he comes with is doable.

Also I might take my original Uzas and remove the axe arm and give him a gun arm instead and reuse his MKIII helmet for this guy, and give my original Uzas one of the bare heads with this kit!

The possibilities are finite!

Finally got around to starting work on the last two First Claw members from Artel.

Classic Night Lords scheme at this point.

Messed about with the ammo feeder on his heavy bolter. It’s leadbelcher then washed with canotepk gloss, then dry brush with Iron Hands Steel.

Makes it look grimy and well used.

Only issue here and I didn’t pick it up when I was dry fitting and as I painted his heavy bolter as a sub assembly its only really become apparent now. Is that there is a noticeable mis-alignment of his left hand and his arm. I am going to have to try and hide that with a little bit of green stuff.

Not sure what I could have done to correct as the triangle pegs on Artel’s stuff normally prevents any such issues. Their resin is far to brittle to try and bend as well.

Ho – hum not sure it really detracts from the overall quality of the mini however.

Finally got around to building and painting this fella.

Either I glued the legs on wrong or the rock his left foot is on, but the rock I couldn’t quite get to glue flat to the base. So I have basically jammed a load of small rocks around it to hide it.

Classic Night Lords paint scheme at this point, but with Variel he is still wearing the markings of the Astral Claws / Black Corsairs.

So we got to use Blood Angels contrast on his pauldrons and his chest insignia. Also used Black Templar contrast on these details.

As Variel isn’t a son of Nostramo he has regular skin so a bit of Gulliman flesh here. Possibly the nicest that flesh has turned out when I have used contrast paints.

Still got a few details to finish but he is looking good so far.

Another 3D render up at Artel W miniatures.

Variel the Flayer former Apothecary with the Red Corsairs who is convinced to join First Claw by Talos.

Wonderful.

Variel The Flayer

I think we just have the 3D render for Cyrion and Uzas to go and the concept art for Xarl.

I would love for Artel to keep churning out Night Lord themed sculpts.

They have done a Lion El’Jonson and a Perturabo could Konard Curze be on its way?

Variel The Flayer

Now up for order at Artel W.

So yeah this guy has arrived, as you can see I have done a lot of work on him…

Just got to wait for this lad to arrive now!

Been awhile, currently painting other stuff for no reason, but this fella turned up and I have built him a little (left the heavy bolter and backpack off to make it easier).

Currently he is undercoated..

I didn’t even know a miniature for this guy existed.

But a monthly check of Ebay threw this up, and I was able to snag him.

Kreig first popped up in the still canon-ish Black Library Novel “Lord of the Night”, and was kicking around during the Horus Hersey.

He has popped up a few times since in various novels the last one being the Primarch book about Konard Curze.

But this mini takes him back the HH before he ascended to Daemon Prince status.

If I were ever to play Warhammer 40K I think he would stand in very well for a Night Lords Master of Executions.

Krieg Acerbus

Currently he is just in Midnight Clad, before I have the boring task of painting in all the Gehenna’s Gold trim.

This guy has a ton of detail little lightning bolts here and there and an obsession with winged skulls (More than a normal Night Lord anyway!).

So painting in all of that detail is not going to be fun.

You had a choice of two heads with this a long haired head (which didn’t really match the description of Kreig) this weird bat skulled helm.

Hopefully get this guy finished over the next week or so.

Then it’s a wait for the rest of Artel’s First claw or the Contekar Terminators from Forge World!

Almost finished.

Just need to complete his axe and run some Liberator Gold highlights over the knee pads.

Quite happy with the way this turned out the white on the bat skull helmet has come out so clean.

So, I have managed to get this guy painted up in double quick time.

Classic Night Lords scheme at this point

Armour

Kantor Blue, Drakenhof Night shade, highlighted with Alatioc Blue.

Pauldron Trim

Gehannas Gold, Agrax Earthshade, Liberator Gold Highlight.

Skin

Rakarth Flesh, Reikland Flesh shade, then Rakarth Flesh highlight

Used some contrast Aethmatic Blue on his sword to give it a power glow, seems to have worked out ok.

Also added his optional helmeted head to the base – because Talos wouldn’t be Talos without his skull helm!

No news on when the other First Claw squad members are going to go on sale yet.

But they will look fantastic next to this guy.
