About the Project

It's August 2020 and the end is in sight. Out of the 2200ish models I own I only currently have 63 left to paint, so why not share the final push with everyone and watch me accidentally buy and print faster than I paint instead of doing this

Tutorial Tile to teach a new bone recipe. Not bad. I might try it on a smaller pieceTutorial Tile to teach a new bone recipe. Not bad. I might try it on a smaller piece

My prize copy of Conquest 2 player starter set arrived on Friday and I should start work on it soon so prep has begun with a good wash and scrub.  I’m not sure what colour scheme I want to work with so please please share your schemes for Spires and 100 Kingdoms with me.  I also have no clue what build options to go with for the stuff from this box to provide a fair game without buying more stuff.  I’m yet to compare this stuff to the Path of Conquest videos or look at points costs, but I will before I assemble anything.  Humans first I suspect.

I also snapped up some new brushes as my old ones were failing. I also snapped up some new brushes as my old ones were failing.

I also snapped up some new brushes as my old ones were failing. As I said previously, I couldn’t get my usual ones so here’s a size comparison and a little feedback.  The black and white brushes have not even seen water yet.  The red and yellow have been used a handful of times at most so are as new.

Top to bottom:

W&N Series 7 00

W&N Series 7 1

Rosemary and Co Series 33 0

MIG MP104 1 (Red)

AMMO Synthetic Liner Brush 0/3 (Yellow)

Army painter Regiment Brush for reference as I assume everyone knows these brushes, or at least has access to them.

W&Ns are my standard.  The Rosemary & Co seems comparable in scale.  I’ve yet to test it out.  The red and yellow brushes I’ve had for a while but not used until recently.  They came in Asset Drop boxes.  When my brushes started failing I thought I’d test them.

The red brush looks great, but it loses its tip as soon as I start painting with it.  Its terrible for detail, but will hopefully be fine for open surface areas.  I hope I just got a bad brush, but I won’t be buying any more of these.

The yellow brush looks odd. It’s so long.  Its terrible for painting as it has no belly, but amazing for eyes and small dot details.  I’m loving it for that, but I do have to keep reminding myself to swap out to it .

The regiment brush is my go to mixing brush (Not used that one yet).  I always keep one on the go purely to destroy by mixing my paints with.  It tends to paint quite well to begin with, until I trash it.

I’ve got this song stuck in my head for now so I’m sharing it all with you, and asking the important question: If this was an option, why did we get the Spice Girls?

I’ve finished work on 6 of my Titan Forge Amazons.  It’s taken a while as I’ve been distratced by the D&D campaign I’m running, and my brushes are failing making everything harder and less fun.  There seems to be a shortage in the country right now.  Places are out of stock and prices are rising.  W&N S7 0’s are twice the price they usually are and twice the price of the 00 and the 1.

I’ve three dinos to paint for this warband and they’re done so I’ve started the prep work on the next project too.

I finished the solo I started while working on Cyber beauty and I’ve also put a lot of work in to my Amazons.  The feathers are the next big step (I hate painting feathers) and I’ll be taking inspiration from the Seraphon, as this faction is clearly inspired by them and lets me add more colour.  I’ve got 3 dinosaurs yet to start work on to go with these ladies.

I’ve had this months Asset Drop box turn up with two more tiles.  I think I’ll only try out their bone recipe this month and put the crystals in my bits box until a time comes when its useful or I want to try out the recipe.

As I near the end, I feel my focus fading.  I can see me soon spending more time playing solo tabletop games and actually playing computer games again, something I haven’t done since I got in to this hobby.  I did actually start Sword Coast legends at the weekend.  Its not the best, but its not terrible.  its not really D&D and it sufers from being a toolkit with a game built in it, rather than being built as a game straight up.  It more Neverwinter Nights 3 rather than a Baldurs Gate sequel.

Cyber Beauty by Klullva Minis, based on 2B from Neir Automata.  I ran in to serious problems when I came to glue the sub assemblies together.  Either I have a misprint, or the legs need to go on in the correct order or they don’t fit.  Look at the last pic below.  I ended up having to glue that leg on with that gap.  I then had to try and fill the gap with liquid putty (Too thick.  Ended up going where I didn’t want it rather than in the gap but I got some in) and then a few coats of PVA.  Whole filling the gap I got something white all over the other leg.  The glue holding the foot to the stone stained the stones white and needed to be repainted.  While I was filling the gap an arm broke off and she came off the stones.  A lovely model to look at, but a pain in the arse to assemble.

I've also made a little more progress on the BonesCon 2018 pirate and started on the bases for my Titan Forge Amazons.I've also made a little more progress on the BonesCon 2018 pirate and started on the bases for my Titan Forge Amazons.

I’ve only one KS left to turn up (Aeon Trespass: Odessey, 27ish minis) and it’s not due until end Q1 2021 (I’ll believe that when I see it) and I’m not expecting to gain any other models in the forseeable future so while I’m currently only one model ahead of where I was when I started this project, I feel I’m making good progress.

To keep the numbers always going down overall I need to get down to 35 models before AT:O arrives and I have around 3 months for that.  I have a solo just in need of a coat of varnish, two tutorial tiles almost finished, and I’ve made a good start on Cyber Beauty.

@Blinky465 asked me to document my attempt on black sheer stockings.

1: I painted the skin first.  Even where the stockings would go I shaded and highlighted fully.  Not sure this mattered in the end, but I did it.  I also did this on the end of a disposable plastic fork left over from a takeaway form The Before Times.

2: I made up a glaze from black paint.  I’ve been to sure of what I’m doing with glazes so I made a wash and used double the water and lahmium medium, s0 6 drops of each to one drop of paint.  I tested this on the fork and it did not look smooth so I added more water and kore water and more water until I ended up painting with coloured water.  I applied a coat or two of this on the fork and it was ok.  It took forever to dry between layers.  I then noticed I actually own a black ink (VGC 72.094  Dunno if these are true inks or not?) so I tried diluting that and tested it on the fork.    It dried quicker and stronger so I went with that instead.  Many coats later I ended up with what you see in the pics.  I tried to apply less layers where the flesh colour would show through more, but I don’t think I did a good job at that.  I need more practise.

3: With the stockings fully dry, I went in and painted the boots and the hem to help define the area and let me really see what I’m lookin at.  Its not bad.  Someone with more experience could get better results, but I think this method has its limits and there’s likely a better technique

I’ve been working on a Female Half-Orc barbarian, 3D print from Titan Forge for Orktober.  While painting her I also decided I would paint this months Tutorial tiles.  They currently have oil washes on them which will apparently want 24-48 hours to dry.  I also started work on the flesh on some other solos and finally started work on the last major project I pledged to get finished this year, even though she intimidates me.

I’ve been prepping for this week.  I plan in painting my Slaanesh half of Wrath and Rapture that I got in the Iron Arena at the 2018 BonesCon.  Over the past week I have built them, decorated the bases to match my Khorne half, primed them and left them a couple of days to dry.  Friday evening and saturday I was applying a wash, then putting them on one side for 6+ hours while I painted something else.  I picked up Vallejos “Non-Death Chaos” paint set for this project as I want to follow the guide to see what I can learn.  Its near the end of Saturday, I’m 3 washes in and I have 2 side solos finished.  I’ve also got the base and 3 shades down on the harp flesh.

Hecate, Goddess of Magic and Witchcraft, the Chillcon 2019 event exclusive mini.  She’s a bit of a dissapointment in quality.  2018s mini was a rather nice metal viking lady on a decorative base.  This lady is a bit of a rough sculpt.  Painted up OK in the end.

Cleopatra, Queen of Egypt by Belt Fed Gaming.  She came in the same goody bag.  She is a pretty basic sculpt.

I have my first roleplay session in over a decade tomorrow.  I’m running the game (Lost Mines of Phandelver) and I haven’t played D&D since 3.5 ed.  Back when I last ran a session video chat wasn’t a thing.  D&D was only done in person and now we are playing over roll20.  We don’t start until 7.30 pm but I imagine I won’t get as much painting done tomorrow as I’d like.  I expect I’ll be procrastinating all day. Not quite painting.  Not quite prepping for the session.  Moderately stressing but not really doing anything about it.

I’ve not got much painting done as I’ve offered to DM for my friends and I haven’t done any roleplay since 3.5 ed so thats a lot of reading and learning to be done.  We start sunday so fingers crossed its not a horiffic mess.

Since I found I can do my planning by watching youtube videos while I paint I’ve gotten 2 models finished and built a few more.  I’ve one more week at work, then I have a week all to myself.  I plan on painting all my Slaanesh then so I’m busy getting them built, based and primed before then.

Here we have Kerub the Armoured Griffon by Cadwallon miniatures.  She’s my second of their models and my second miscast.  The first had huge mold slip I had to fight against and lacked pegs due to where they had placed the vents.  This is easier to work with but far more pronounced.  You see that tail?  Its got a flat underside where it is supposed to rest on the base.  is it resting on the base?  Is it anywhere near the fudging base?  You could park 2 cars in that gap!

I didn’t enjoy this model much.  Limbs and wings were in the way at all times, but really wanted to be attached before painting.  I kept getting paint in the wrong places and nothing quite worked as it should, even if ive gotten it to work well in the past.  He looks OK now he’s done though, but not my finest.

I need a better method of painting white wings.  If anyone has any guides please share some links.  These are functional but I wish to do better next time.

I also painted Reapers Moor Troll, which I won from Monkeys With Fire earlier this year in the Before Times (Stay Inside!  Do not think about The Event!)

I have not glued him on to the display base as this means if I ever need a polearm wielding armoured gorilla for a game (Comes up more often than you’d think) I can still use him.

The spear head has some yellow on it.  I’ve had some yellows untested since november last year that came from Asset Drop with a Tutorial Tile for them so I thought I’d fish it back out of my bits box and test them out on that before using them here.  Glad I did.  2 out of the three were not great, but I did use the base paint (Instar Pure Ocide Yellow) and mix/layer it with some Scale Colours.

This is Warlord Kong by ScaleBro who I got as part of a Monster Box from Asset Drop and came with the display base and extras, which they had cusom made especially.  I did not use the supplied camp fire because I’m not brave enough to try OSL yet.

I finished my tank project and also the three Tutorial Tiles I had started.  A new Asset Drop Discovery box turned up with the standard 2 more tiles in it.  I usually just chuck them in my bits box as 40mm square bases are no use to me, and typically they’re a little flat and out of scale anyway.  I can’t even chop them off the bases and add them as base decorations as their bases are too thick to do much with safely.  However, both these tiles are to demonstrate paints and schemes I wanted to try out without risking a model I care about.

So thats 5 models done, but 2 more added to the queue.

ACTUAL ORIGINAL START OF THE PROJECT

TLDR: I’ve got 63 unpainted models left in the house and I’m going to try and paint them all.

Long version:

I started wargaming and painting back in 2012 and since then I’ve been fighting the constant battle to paint everything I own.  For a few years now I have been able to paint slightly more models in a year than I gain which has been great.  This lockdown has been a big help too, despite me still working full time.  I had Reichbusters (128 models) turn up a few months back and got it all painted within 3 weeks somehow.  That was expected to take me 4-6 months!  I’ve since been powering through my painting backlog.

I keep a detailed spreadsheet of everything I own which lets me know whats painted and unpainted.  Its telling me I have about 150 unpainted models, but when think about it I can’t think of that many so I studied my spreadsheets.  35ish have yet to turn up (KS’s that wont pay out for months), 55ish I have been planning on selling along for a while now (PM me if you want some Dreadball.  I’ve lots I know Im never going to get to play with).  Theres a few which should really just be thrown in the bits box (What use is a single Genestealer for example).

If I discount all this lot, assume the sold is sold, consider the bits box stuff as spare parts and forget about the stuff I don’t have in my possession yet then I only have 63 models left to paint  This explains why I can’t think of or find 150 unpainted models.

I love painting but any time I do anything other than paint I fear I’m allowing my backlog time to grow and take over.  I want to beat it down and keep it down so I can spend my free time playing solo games without feeling like I’m slacking.  I’m half way through Reichbusters but not touching it.  I’ve Escape Tales: Low Memory gathering dust and I’ve started work on Ranges of Shadow Deep minis.  There’s a whole world of games out there I plan and prepare to do but never actually do.  Time to remove excuses.

As I’m in the final push I thought I’d document my progress here and you can all watch me as I approach 100% complete.  Given running out of bare plastic is rumoured to be deadly and there’s already a global pandemic on the go and I’m spending my lunchtimes cutting down large branches while standing under them I don’t think now is the time to test the lethality of this so I’m going to aim to have about 20 projects left and call that a win (A project is defined as any model or group of models that would be painted together, ie a unit of identical models, or 3 similar solos would count as single projects)

I believe this chart is accurate, but I may yet find a model or two to add to itI believe this chart is accurate, but I may yet find a model or two to add to it

OTT, I’ve been holding off on painting the Slaaneshi force in case you do another paint along at home GW Hobby Weekend.  Is there any talk of doing one once Covid goes away or should I just paint it when I feel like it?  I’m about to buy a house so I’ll be broke for a long time after so won’t be keen to spend £60+ I don’t need to just to join in.  I enjoyed the 40K weekend but was busy most of the Star Wars one so didn’t really take part.

Also, please don’t take this to mean I don’t want to win any more minis.  More minis are always welcome and one of my favourite type of minis are free minis.
