Ultimate Heroquest Painted Core Set

About the Project
A friend of mine gave a bunch of old games and miniatures away to the guys in my club. One of the games he had for grabs was an incomplete copy of HeroQuest. The items missing were very easy to replace, a few of the cards from the core game, about 7 miniatures and a few tokens and dice. I decided that I would replace the missing bits, paint the models and then play with this really old bit of nostalgia. I soon started to wonder about replacing the cardboard sections of the scenery pieces with scratch-builds. This is something I am still considering but more importantly I also decided to replace the old plastic moulded bases with clear acrylic like I have done with Blackstone Fortress.

Time to make a start!
So after getting all the replacement parts for the game I started to remove the bases from the models. Gees these models are made with tough plastic. Clippers to remove most of the plastic around the feet was sufficient followed by filing and trimming with a modelling knife.
Now you may be thinking, ‘why not just saw them away with a really fine saw blade’? Well, I did consider this but as you will see from the pictures, the miniatures do not have a lot of their feet showing above the base. I wanted the feet to be in keeping with the chunky and more exaggerated look of the late 80’s early 90’s Citadel minis.
So I shaped the spare plastic below the feet into shoes. I’ll do this for all the minis as I think it’ll make a huge difference to the final look.
.....this is taking a longer time than I expected.
When I first took this little project on I though it would be a quick one. Smash it out in a few weeks then onto the next. My intention has been to paint the models to as high a standard as I am able, replace missing or broken parts along the way and then sell it to someone who might appreciate the set more than I do (I am very much a Sci-Fi guy 😀 ). But I quickly found myself wavering as other projects took over, Marvel Crisis Protocal Starter took up pretty much all of August and other minor projects interjected to put me back.
But I have renewed my efforts and hope to have the whole project finished by the end of September.
I have removed the bases from about half the monsters and cleaned up the mould lines too. They are a little hard work as I’ve been using clippers and a modelling knife to remove the original base and let me tell you, that GREEN plastic is so much tougher than the Grey and Bone colours.
But they’re coming along well and I’ve even managed to get a few more colours down and paint the Barbarian almost to finished.
Finally finished the Heroes.....ish
I have finally finished the Heroes from the core set. They have turned out rather well. I wanted to make sure that they looked like the heroes as they appear on the box art so they aren’t as colourful as many of those painted by others. But I am really pleased with how they turned out.
Acrylic bases are becoming a favourite of mine too. I’ve started rebasing my Star Wars Legion collection and the Blackstone Fortress miniatures I have too. But I think they’ve done the Heroquest minis a lot of justice.
Understated and probably slightly muted, but I wanted the bad guys to look like the box art too. I may put an eight pointed star in red on his tunic but I am undecided at the moment.
Finished!
So I have finally finished the Heroquest box. And I am super chuffed. There are a good mix of techniques used here. The Orcs, Goblins, Fimir and Undead were all painted with Contrast paints and then highlighted up afterwards. I love Contrast paint as I feel it helps you know where the highlights go afterwards.
The other minis were a classic base colour, wash and highlight. I like to use multiple techniques when painting and always love trying out tips and hints I find from other painters such as the mighty Duncan Rhodes and Sorastro.
I feel the main feature is the Acrylic Bases. And oh my science do they look good.
Anyway, they are finished and I am definitely pleased with them.
