About the Project

So my first army when getting back into the hobby was a mantic Games Abyssal Dwarf army for kings of war first edition, I love this army and if someone told me I can only have one wargaming army, this would be it. It's recently gotten a whole new bunch of kits so here I'm going to log what I currently have, how i painted everything and how the army expands!

Also in the process of 3d printing some hobgoblins, in kings of war these will be used as slave orcs, but if I can mashup the files well enough I’ll be creating a whole army to use as ratkin (in kings of war theyre genetic mutants created by the abyssal dwarves as slaves, so they’ll fit profile wise and lore wise)

The project continues on!

So I’m currently in lockdown and looks like I will be for the rest of the year! What does that mean? More hobby time! To kick things off ive decided to update all the paint jobs of my currently painted abyssal dwarves with extra highlights.

I began with my greater obsidian golem and Bhurak my halfbreed champion. I gave the golem much needed touch ups where the paint was peelin, I also layered over all the metal again and I redid all of the crystals in black. I then gave the whole model a matte varnish before applying a gloss varnish by brush to all the crystals.

On the halfbreed champion I just layered up the red and the metal and added better snow to the base.

So 2021 my hobby resolution is! To finish off projects in progress, my abyssal dwarves are the top billing and I figured I could get an easy win (once again) replacing the shields on my immortal guards (though this time for the last time) and also painting up a helfane.

The shields were beyond easy, prime, basecoat gun metal, layer on weapon bronze, wash AP strong tone and done.

I then washed the helfane parts, assembled him and then filled the gaps with milliput ready for priming and painting to begin in the new week!

Wow thankyou!

Wow I did not expect to receive a golden button award! A huge thankyou to everyone who has been following and giving nominations for this project. It really is my favourite army so to have it receive the prestigious button feels great! I’ll have another update for you this week, it’ll only be small but I’m quite looking forward to getting my bazuzu the vile and arhak soulbinder (a now long oop mini) done!

Wow thankyou!

Immortal guard shields redux

So I didn’t get nearly as much hobby done today as I had thought with it being mothers day and all, but I did at least manage to finally redo the shields of my immortal guard, previously I had these little runes on the shields but after getting the new hard plastic kits I realised my immortal guard needed something a bit fancier to stand out, enter some old shield icons from many many years ago and an instamould production line over the past week I was ready to redo the shields!

Now attaching the shields was a bit of a pain since I had to use superglue, tweezers and could not remove the models individually as they were multibased, but I think the new skull motifs on their shields makes them look a bit more evil!

The slavers vanguard

So today was initially going to be a hobby write off as I was playing pathfinder on roll20 for most of the day, but! We had a lunch break and I decided I would do some quick assembly of my abyssal dwarves for vanguard! I had all the models that were released specifically for vanguard. So to start off with I assembled my 5 blacksouls and 5 decimators, removing the mould lines with my citadel mould line remover tool before assembling finally. I then moved onto the ratkin slaves who just required me to clip off the flash and then glue them with superglue, they were fairly easy to figure out and look pretty neat I think. It was then time to tackle the resins, now the first step was to clean off flash before assembling with superglue then I did arguably one of the most important things you need to do with ANY resin kit, which is to wash them in warm soapy water when the superglue is dry, this is to get rid of any excess mould release agent which can stuff up your priming adhering to the models. Here below you can see the whole warband.

Now the immortal guardians halberd was a bit bent out of shape, but as it was resin  there’s a real easy fix, get a cup of boiling water from your kettle, dunk the affected part in for about 10 seconds then remove and straighten and problem solved!

The slavers vanguard

Now I only partially assembled the hexcaster as gluing the flight stand on already would just mean I prime a part I want to be clear to create the floating rune effect…

I also went ahead and sleeved all the vanguard cards, here you can see the brand I use which perfectly fits them!

The black hearted army so far

So here below are all of my abyssal dwarves so far, as you can see ive got two greater obsidian golems (the bodies are from Rothand Studio, the heads from Mantic). An iron caster on greater winged halfbreed(mantic) an overmaster (mantic), a halfbreeds champion(mantic), 2 regular ironcasters(mantic), 3 slave drivers (bannermen from scibor converted with gw banners), 3 Angkor heavy mortars (mantic) 2 firebreaths (mantic) I’ve got 4 regiments of immortal guard (only one is pictured here) 2 regiments of halfbreeds (mantic with scibor shields and gw banners) 2 hordes of lesser obsidian golems (mantic) 2 troops of gargoyles (mantic) a horde of “grotesques” who are actually mantic bodies converted to be pushing old mashups of the classic tenderisers and whirlwind from gamesworkshop way back in the day!

So what’s being added to the army? Well I’m glad you asked! First off I want to finish off all my immortal guard including switching the designs on their shields up. Then my 3 G’rog light mortars and 3 katsuchan missile launchers that have been unloved for too many years! Then i want to get onto 2 hordes of slave orcs, 2 regiments of slave orc gore riders before finally turning my attention on the brand new kits mantic has produced, ill begin with everything in the vanguard boxes so I can run my beloved abyssal dwarves in that game too, then it’s full steam ahead on hard plastic blacksouls, decimators and then to top everything off the brand new Helfane kit! Stay tuned, I think I worked out I’ll have over 7000 points by the time this is all done!
