About the Project

Previously planned to paint my Mythic Battles Pantheon set in a style like 300/Sun City (comic) It contained mainly black and white minis with only 2 colours added to the mini. This worked fine to a point and looked great on the Spartans but I soon realised that it wouldn’t suit many of the minis and then we had the arrival of CONTRAST PAINTS (insert ray from the heavens sound) I am not into taking absolutely forever to get minis to a super high standard anymore and I am an evangelist for tabletop standard. It’s all you ever need and unless you’re going into a competition or have all the time on your hands then it’s effort down the drain. Also being a father of 2 my time is not my own and the kids deserve my time more than a 2nd or 3rd layer of highlights on a mini deserves my time. The minis you see will be mainly using contrast paints and washes to get them to a good standard to allow even more immersion into my favourite game of all time.

As I said I am trying to get these done with as best a time and results ratio I can. Tabletop standard all the way. I decided to batch paint a bunch of heroes the other night and although none got as far as I would like I was happy with a big chunk of progress and another 3 hour session should get them finished, maybe the bases done as well

Getting all the bases done together but this is the stages of Pan and all the others have gone through. I sand/stone mixes, tile grout and cork nuggets initially.

I then uses a variety of washes etc and then whilst still wet I add a brown scatter mix. Once dry I add static grass.

once this is all thoroughly dry by the morning I shall ad some highlights on rocks and maybe a tuft or grass or flowers here and there.

I wanted nice natural tones with Pan. Generally contrast paints when normal highlights. None of these gods so far have taken anymore than 4 hours painting time. Their bases will all be done once I have a few more done and I’ll base a bunch of them together to help with saving time and coherency across the range.

Ares was generally all contrast paints and I do intend to go back and work on the cloak a bit more but for now this is fine.

the gold was achieved with Nazdreg Yellow contrast and then a GW gold “Dry” paint which I have zero recollection of ever buying but over the yellow contrast I was so pleased with the gold look that this achieves for so little effort

As I have said in the description of this project the paint scheme mainly consists of contrast paints for things like the flesh tones and cloth

the armour and weapons I wanted to  achieve a bronze that was developing a patina of verdigris.

I made my only bronze paint via browns and some elements of copper and gold metallics to give it an element of sheen but not too much and then I used the GW technical Verdigris paints. I tried to use it sparingly not slap it all over the shield etc. Very pleased with how Zeus came out and this all took about 4 hours painting time
