About the Project

As the title states, it's random stuff, but with very good reason. First, to encourage me to get stuff at the very least built, and ultimately painted. Second, to improve my painting which isn't terrible I can admit despite being my own worst critic, but I'll never improve if I don't actually paint anything. Third, to reduce the pile of shame (almost impossible I know, but no harm in trying). Four, and why the 'random', because I get so bored batch painting. Additionally this has come off the back of a pledge thread in a local gaming group's Facebook page that I decided to take part in due mostly to the lockdown. I'm not the fastest painter so don't expect masses of minis, more like singles every now and then with the odd unit thrown in.

Didn’t get much done this month, but I did manage to finish a 10 man unit of Guards in a Cadian 717th scheme.

Given it’s May the 4th it’s compulsory to work on something Star Wars, so I decided to re-base 3 units of Stormtroopers I painted quite a while ago.

I originally went for a far too brown rocky affair that I was never truly happy with.I originally went for a far too brown rocky affair that I was never truly happy with.

I’ve never been one for elaborate basing schemes, and today was no different ?, so I went for a simple patchy grass look using Woodland Scenics’ fine turfs. Whilst it may be a little dull to some, I’m quite happy, and it was quick.

To differentiate units on the table when they get a little close to each other I decided to add dots to the rear/side of the bases using a toothpick with the very end of the point flattened off with a knife and some Scalecolor Heavy Metal.

Another unit of Snowtroopers finished this week, so that’s the pledge finished for my local club’s April pledge challenge. Now to decide what to do for May.

The first unit of Snowtroopers done, one more to go.

Didn’t want to go too bright, so the armour has no pure white.

Primer

  • Black below, grey main primer and white zenith

Armour

  • Army Painter Dark tone wash
  • Vallejo Dark Sea Grey layer 1
  • Vallejo Dark Sea Grey and Sky Grey 1-2 mix layer 2
  • Sky Grey layer 3
  • Sky Grey and Daler Rowney White Ink 1-1 mix layer 4

Cloth inc. boots

  • Vallejo Stone Grey basecoat
  • Army Painter Soft Tone wash
  • Stone Grey layer 1
  • Stone Grey and Sky Grey 2-1 mix layer 2
  • Stone Grey and Sky Grey 1-2 mix layer 3

Weapons

  • Scalecolor Heavy Metal basecoat
  • Citadel Contrast Black Templar layer
  • Scalecolor Thrash Metal layer 2 on flamer muzzle only.

Based with various mixes of Army Painter Brown Battleground, Battleground Rocks and Snow. Was a little unsure of the snow as it looked too powdery, but adding some watery PVA at the end seemed to help.

Shiny!

Rastus the Charmed from the Nightvault box finished a couple of days ago. Decided to go for more of a Turquoise instead of blue and a darker gold courtesy of Scalecolor Black Gold. If this one taught me anything is that Army Painter blue wash doesn’t work well on large areas like the cloth, or not for me at least and that white artists ink works much better than white paint.

Now to crack on with 14 Snowtroopers.

Got a Nighthaunt from the Nightvault box test painted last weekend. I decided to stick to the vanilla paint scheme (or close enough) as I quite liked it, and after wasting time trying to decide on an alternative!

This did give me a chance to eventually try the GW method of adding rust, have to say I’m quite happy with it.

Next up, a Sigmarine.

First proper paint job in a while is Zero Year Batman from Gotham City Chronicles. Being made from PVC it was horrendous to prep, so any recommendations with dealing with this material would be very welcome.

I wanted to stay true to the art in the game, but decided to darken the gloves as I didn’t want them to stand out.

Next will be a Nighthaunt from the Nightvault box.

Our gaming group’s pledge challenge went live two weeks ago, the first one to be concluded at the end of April. As I am a slow painter and still had to work from home I decided not to pledge anything too challenging.

First pledge

So we have, at least build Saint Celestine and Belisarius Cawl, paint 14 Snow Troopers, Zero Year Batman from Gotham City Chronicles and test paint 1 Sigmarine and 1 Nighthaunt with hopefully spare time to add more.

Within the first couple of days I did get Cawl, Celestine and her helpy helpers built. They were such a pain in the arse I decided painting can wait till a week after never……. unless I grow a spine first!

Up next Zero Year Batman.
