Spring Clean Challenge: Heroquest

About the Project
Dusting down my set of Heroquest. I started this project properly about 10 years ago. It’s been a slow burner and so there’s some variation in painting ability as I’ve progressed over the years but I haven’t touched it in about 2 years. Hoping to get this all completed including furniture and I’m not taking my time over it, just trying to get it completed!

Spring Clean Challenge: Heroquest
The heroes. Some work to pick up here. The Elf’s sword needs a restart (never finished it in the first place). The wizard needs to be perhaps redone. I struggled with this mini and I can’t remember why! The barbarian’s sword was my first attempt at non-metallic metal. His head is chipped on top so I’ll need to revisit that again.
Here’s the
The Gargoyle. I went for a stone look here rather than the original artwork. A bit of touching up required where the paint has chipped off over the years. I may need to lighten the cracking effect I painted too. I’ll need to finish off the sword and the whip.
The Orks. I’m not going to do much here other than finish off the bases. I went for a colour scheme that matches them to the corridor sections of the board. As stand alone pieces , the bases look a weird colour but standing on a corridor square they don’t look too bad.
Furniture. I always try and match things in and I was really pleased in my paint colour matching the print colour. Think I used the old citadel Snakebite Leather with a brown/red shade for the wood. Don’t think I need to spend time doing much to these, perhaps I’ll go back and do some subtle highlighting on the wood grain.
Chaos Sorcerer and Warriors. Some work to do here. I went for a Skeletor scheme for the sorcerer and you can see that miniature is far from finished. I need to go back in on the face and also do some highlighting on the clothing. I’m not going to bother doing anything with the Chaos Warriors. One of the Chaos Warriors was painted according to the original art from the game (I think this was one of the first miniatures from this game to get painted so we’re talking over 10 years ago. I spray varnished it but it fogged up. I did take a cotton bud dipped in olive oil to try and get the varnish off but had little to no success here. Again, like all these miniatures, I need to go and finish off the bases.
Undead! Not much to about these guys. Love the classic feel of sculps. Need to go in and finish the bases. The greenish mummy’s face used the Rotting Flesh colour from the Creature set from Citadel miniatures – remember that? Incidentally, a lot of these miniatures were painted using the old citadel box sets – I think it helps in that retro early 90’s feel and most of the spring clean I’ll be doing I’ll use the old paints to keep the feel.
