A Song of Ice and Fire – CMON miniatures game – Lannisters

About the Project
Dusted off my ASOIAF Kickstarter pledge after encouraging some friends to pick up the new Free Folk / Targaryen start sets. Using that as motivation to try and paint some of the mountain of plastic that was shipped. First time I've tackled something this big in terms of number of minis so using the project system to keep me going (hopefully). I'm going to attempt to paint to a decent tabletop starter, concentrating a bit more on the named characters.

This Project is Completed
Guardsmen (2nd unit)
More of the same – rushed these and it shows – but glad they are done as that’s the last bulk unit the army.
Grand Maester Pycelle
This was an easy enough mini to paint – I made the most of the zenithal highlights and Contrast paint combo. That did the robe and once I’d done the skin it was just a case of picking out details.
The robe didn’t come out the colour I intended but the contrast did it’s job well enough – I would have preferred a browner look but that’s my fault through paint choice.
Paints used :
Skin – Bugman’s Glow // Cadian Fleshtone // Reikland Fleshshade
Beard – Ulthuan Grey // Nuln Oil (carefully)
Robe – Contrast Aggaros Dunes
Gold trim – Retributor Armour // Reikland Fleshshade
Wine bottle – Waywatcher Green glaze
Cup – Leadbelcher // Nuln Oil
Sandals – Rhinox Hide
Assault Veteran & Guard Captain (alt sculpts)
Rinse and repeat really.
For the Assault Veteran is using the same Vallejo Mecha Color Metallic Red (69.066) + Contrast Blood Angels Red mix that I used on the crossbow men previous for the red plate armour. This gives it a slight metallic sheen and distinguishes it from the cloth.
I think his cloak came out really well – just Contrast Red over zenithal but shows the cloak flow really nicely. It’s not quite so noticeable on the Guard Captain but its there as well.
As usual now I look at the photos I can see all my mistakes but thats greatly enlarged and at tabletop level/distance I think they’ll look good enough.
…and that’s it! All the Lannister’s from the core box and KS exclusives done.. phew.. I’ll summarize my thoughts in another post later this week…
Final Thoughts
Finally thoughts then.
Firstly I’ve got a new found respect for anyone that’s completed a large army! This was by no means large but there were times when I’d had enough and didn’t pick a brush up for weeks. The project system helped get me back into it, both the guilt of having no new entries and the feedback from fellow CoGs. Thanks to everyone that commented and voted.
I’m pleased I’ve finished, the collection looks great as an army. I’m glad I didn’t make the scheme too complex as if I had I might not have finished. Looking at the army as a whole you miss (forgive) some of the mistakes you see what looking at a more individual mini level. Its just gutting that I can’t actually get these on the table for a game due to lockdown.
I’ve painted all the Lannister’s I own from my Kickstarter pledge and the exclusives CMON threw in. If I ever get round to painting the Stark half of my collection I’ll do a new project. I’m calling this project done as a result…
