A different project
Seeing it gaining some tracking at the local club, I decided to jump into A Song of Ice and Fire Miniatures game. Nice change of pace for myself, as I don’t actively play any other rank-and-file fantasy games and I quite liked the straightforward mechanics but the learn-as-you go complexity the game offers.
First stop was the choice of faction. The game is offering me change of pace, then why not go with the painting too and for something that’s furthest away from what I’ve recently done otherwise. The bright red and gold of Lannisters was exactly that, and after the few demo games and let’s plays online, I quite like how the folks of Casterly Rock are on the table top.
The project itself was a little unusual for me. I typically jump between projects, paint what what ever I feel like and build up armies slow, this time I wanted to get everything ready as quickly as possible and so that I wouldn’t necessarily be returning to this project once the army is battle ready.
Writing this, I’ve in fact painted everything. Now it’s all just to take photos and upload them here.
Lannister Guardsmen
Guardsmen, the core fighting unit of the Lannister army. There’s two units in the starter set, and I started painting from these. The colour and technique choices here defined the whole project, for the rest of the army I stuck to the same pallette.
Primer and pre-shading:
I started off from black primer, airbrushed on. Considering the red and gold paint scheme, I did the pre-shade zenith with Vallejo Model Air Aged White. It’s an off white, creamy colour.
Red:
– Citadel Contrast Blood Angels Red
First time trying out the Contrast paints, I went with the Contrast Blood Angels Red. It’s absolutely fantastic paint, works well over the pre-shaded figures as I’m sure it does also for flat primer. I highlighted and shaded it a bit on characters and some individual models where I felt like it, but mostly the reds are just pre-shade and Contrast.
Gold:
my trusty trio of
– Vallejo Model Colour Ochre Brown
– Vallejo Model Colour Yellow Ochre
– Scale75 Tenere Yellow (or VMC Ice Yellow, which I ran out and replaced with S75)
Black:
– Contrast Black Templar
Armour:
– Black and Citadel Nuln Oil Shading
– Vallejo Model Colour Offwhite and Army Painter White for highlights.
Skin:
Either
– Army Painter Barbarian Flesh
– Citadel Contrast Guilliman Flesh
– Highlights: AP Barbarian flesh with VMC Deck Tan.
Leathers:
– Army Painter Leather Brown
– Citadel Agrax Earthshade wash
– AP Leather Brown mixed with VMC Deck Tan for the models I bothered to highlight.
Poor Fellows
I had this project marked as ‘completed’. But what army is completed when there are reinforcements available?
Here’s the Poor Fellows, I’ll post couple other units as separate post.
Warrior’s Sons
Another faith based unit as reinforcements to my army, the Warrior’s Sons. Loved painting the armour on these guys.
I wanted to get them on the table quick, so I kept the capes simple. It’s simply a Contrast Yellow on top of pre-shade.
