About the Project
This is my slow Carcharodon project log that will feed into a larger Badab war themed project. And yes, I know Primaris marines didn’t happen in the lore til long after the Badab War. NOTE: I just published this publicly, but it is also on hold as I did this work a while couple of weeks and my current focus is my Night Lords blog.

Entry 8: Vanguard Test Models
Some WIP Vanguard marines from Shadowspear. I’m only doing half the squad and figuring out the most efficient way to do the rest after the first test model
That way I can do a better stage by stage guide
Enjoy looking and thanks for stopping by.
Entry 7: Completed test model
My light box is on the way out
My first finished test Space Shark and am really happy with it
Entry 6: Highlighting and the Librarian
I completed this guy a while back and never got around to updating this post.
I kind of threw in the towel and scrapped the white. As you can see it is a light greyish colour now and I’m much happier with it even though it does not look as great as it should if I just did this in the first place
Lessons have been learned and the robe now ties nicely into the power armour of the standard marines in the army.
Entry 5: Mistakes. I hate painting White
I broached on a mistake I mentioned I did in a previous post.
Picture 1:
The robes were basecoated with a bluey grey (GW’s The Fang base paint). From there I layered up (badly) with Administratum Grey (OOP but an equivalent to Ulthuan Grey or maybe Celestra Grey) and tried to work up by adding ceramite white. It was horrible.
***
In the end I used a mix of dawnstone and lahmia medium in two thin wash coats to take the edge off the white and provide crude shading and blending. I think it is the best I could do as salvage work without starting again from scratch.
I will update the highlights and layering tutorial on a future post, as it is a separate subject.
Entry 4: Layering (brought to you by Dark Photos)
Yeah… these photos aren’t good but I don’t have a time machine, so…
I did ‘The Fang’ (GW) on the robes. In hindsight, this was a mistake. Just follow the power armour guide for the Carcharodons power armour to give it a whale/shark skin style look to tie them into the army. This was a mistake.
Entry 3: Librarian Basecoats
After batch painting a bunch of grey marines I was kind of bored and wanted to paint the Librarian. Since Space Marine Librarians traditionally wear blue power armour it seemed like the right time; he was a breath of fresh air to do, and broke up how monotonous the drybrushing got toward the end, but moreso how disheartening following the guide was and ultimately leaving me with a ‘Sprue Grey’ model.
For the skin I followed the Raven Guard Skin Guide on Entry 1
For the power armour you can use either of these:

NOTE: I deviated, and used Mordian Blue (out of production paint I have plenty of pots of) instead of Kantor blue (which I did not own at the time of doing this).
Here are the basecoats:
Entry 2: Test Model
I had a spare model lying around which I tested out before the work on Entry 1. following the guide from Entry 1, I got up to the stage where Dawnstone was applied. At this point the model looked like bare plastic sprue and I was super disheartened. I could not even take a photo of it and post it up. Beside a plastic grey model without primer it looks almost identical.
After taking a break for a day or two and talking to a friend about it, as well as showing them the model, I continued on.
When applying the wash, I did not paint it into the recesses, but just applied it all over the model. As you can see from the first two pictures I was a little heavy with it, but in comparrison to what came before it really breathed life into the model. Not to mention the fact that it look like it had been through a few battles and dirty (how a Carcharodon should be).
Entry 1: Basecoating Primaris Vanguard from Shadowspear
The Primaris Vanguard are beaituful models, though notably the Eliminators (Snipers) fit together awkwardly at the shoulders with gaps. Be vigilant, dry fit them, and be prepared to do a bit of work to get them smooth with either hobby tools or green stuff / liquid green stuff.
NOTE: I almost immediately deviated by not using Mechanicus Standard Grey to spray undercoat the model. I had Chaos Black on hand, did not want to spend the money on a primer for 19 or so models, and already had plenty of Mechanicus standard grey on hand. Doing a drybrush with a dark colour over a black primer also kind of does like a bulit-in shade, too.
The photographs are a little dark, but I started with a heavy drybrush of Mechanicus Standard Grey for my Carcharodons Space Marines. It was quick and fun. I am using this painting guide:

Full disclosure: I have deviated from this a little later on adding brighter colours to break up the monotony on purity seals and grenades. In addition I am unsure as to how I will presently do the cloaks.
The skin was done with the Warhammer TV Raven Guard skin guide, reflecting the Chapter’s background*:

*The same guide used on the skin of my Night Lords.
