Choosing & Painting a Space Marine Chapter

About the Project
1995, just moved to a tiny village in the middle of Devon about 2000 miles from home. That's my first involvement with Games Workshop courtesy of the other kids at school and the surrounding villages. Fast forward to present day (with a 10 year break in the middle) and I have painted my first space marine! ? Never liked the stumpy look of the miniatures until the primaris and issue 1 of Conquest (never bought another mind) It was the perfect opportunity to paint some and see if I like it. I paint better if I like the fluff and trying to find a chapter I like is hard. So I thought I would paint a few different ones and see what clicked. Still had to be a fluff I liked and a somewhat canon chapter, preferably a successor chapter. I have come across several at the moment but any advice or recommendations appreciated.

Shiney
Right, only a small update as I have not found the time or indeed the mojo to paint. I have finished almost all the main body and tried to work on making the highlights small areas. The smaller the area the more shiny! Haven’t had to try that since my 3D rendering days many moons ago(much easier just moving a slider for specular reflections than layering or wet blending) ? I have found I favour layering but maybe I just need to practice with wet blending. Anyhow, here he is so far, is he dark blue enough for Crimson fists? . Have fun!
To sneak or not to sneak?
Raptors are a sensible marine, camouflage, hit and run and long range shooting. They fit the logic part of my brain but there’s just something a little too bland for me with the colour. If I choose to paint some more marines I need to like the background. This leads me to another shortlisted chapter – crimson fists.
I have some WIP of my test, I’m already liking painting blue more. ? Spending time trying to get some darker, shinier blue armour. I’m finding it helpful to add a little wash into my shade/highlight colours (blue or black army painter washes ) seems to help me smooth the transition without having to add too much water. Almost done half so that’s half to go.
First up
Raptors are up first, sensible marines for the win?
My first ever space marine is a veteran Raptor sergeant, I chose white kneepad to mark veteran and black helmet for sergeant. The base is to be determined still 🙂 I was going for GW style tabletop – turns out I can’t do that and have to go beyond 🙂
