About the Project

A buddy and I start with the ShadowSpear boxset and build that up to a fully painted 5k army each - or at least that is our plan!

Wow, so chuffed that my MoP grabbed me a Golden Button award this month. Really made my bank holiday weekend and inspired me to put up some pictures of a couple of more ShadowSpear models from the Chaos side. I really can’t compliment these new chaos scuplts enough. They have been great fun to paint, first up the second Obliterator and Greater Possessed to complete both those sets.

These chaps were painted using the same mechanism as my previous models, using PP Coal Black as the first outline colour, with GW Kabalite Green as the edge highlight colour.

Next up a couple of the CSMs from the 10 man squad that you get with the boxed set. I am considering adding the transfers that GW give you in the set to these. Usually I am not a fan of the GW Chaos transfers, but the gold Chaos emblems might look great. I am going to finish off the next 8 CSM models in the box and then that only leaves me with the Daemon engine – nearly there!

Back to the Chaos side of the box and I have been working on some of the other fantastic character models that come in the box, first up the Master of Possession, who is a great little psyker who really compliments the daemonkin part of the box and isn’t a slouch in combat either.

I’ve also finally gotten around to finishing the first of the new Obliterator sculpts that is in this box and oh my! There is just so much detail on these models, every time you pick them up you notice another really nice detail that the designers have integrated into the model, like the ammunition belts that have been absorbed into the daemon flesh. I also added a Blood Angels helmet to the base of the model, just to incite my opponent. I always think that these sorts of details add to the back story of the two forces and make for a more thematic narrative behind the games we play, so well worth the effort.

So for my side of shadowspear to 5k, I settled on blood angels mainly because of the amazing Duncan’s battle ready video for painting blood angels, though it was a tough call between blood angels, Salamanders and Space Wolves.

I started the force off as you would with an imperial Knight i got for Christmas. Next up i traded my chaos from shadowspear with a guy at my FLGS for his shadowspear vanguard marines side of the box.

I also acquired a librarian dreadnought, 10 tactical marines in mk4 armour, 10 man devastator squad with missiles and 10 sanguinary guard one of which will be an ancient. I also got 10 tartaros terminators which may go into my horus heresy iron warriors.

As this was shadowspear to 5k I started with the infiltrators and doing 5 of them. My recipe as previously mentioned was Duncan’s Mephiston red, Nuln oil x2, dry brush Mephiston red but then I dry-brushed again Astorath red. I am really happy with these so far and am looking forward to getting to the 5k mark, if i exclude the terminators then I’m currently sitting pretty on 2188. That’s not including duplicate heroes from shadowspear or the second unit of suppressors. Hopefully this log will help me reach the goal of 5k painted before December.

So I have been pretty busy these past few weeks working on the Chaos part of the Shadow Spear boxset. I have decided to paint them Black Legion, as per the box as I have a huge love of Abaddon and his background. I decided to put a bit of a Blue/Green highlight on my models though, which is a change from the default grey highlights.

First up are the Greater Possessed, for their daemoney bits I went with a Rakarth Flesh washed with Carroburg Crimson and was pretty happy with how the Red went with the Black/Green/Gold.

Next up is the Master of Possession with his great balls of fire.
