About the Project

My Brother bought me a copy of the latest Blood Bowl for Christmas! ( DAMN IT! AS IF I DON'T HAVE ENOUGH TO PAINT...) I've decided to paint the teams as those shown on the box art.The Reikland Reavers and the Gouged Eye. Let the story begin!

The Black Orc Blocker. GRIMJAW GITSLASH!!!!

Grimjaw was base coloured as was mentioned a few posts back.

I’ve started with the armour. I’m hoping that i can recreat what i managed with Oaf the Thrower. Here is where i’ve got to….

Sideways again.....note that the duster on his right hand is still just base coloured...If i'm honest the photograph doesn't show that the contrast is actually a bit stronger. Sideways again.....note that the duster on his right hand is still just base coloured...If i'm honest the photograph doesn't show that the contrast is actually a bit stronger.

The only way i can explain this step is calling it ‘Lazy blending’….

  • I took Citadel’s ‘Scab Red'(Now ‘Khorne Red’) and attempted to blend lazily up to ‘Blood Red'( Now ‘Evil Sunz Scarlet’) at the areas i imagined to be most hit by light on the larger panels of Armour.

I haven’t worried too much about what it looks like as it will later be washed back down.An air brush would make short work of this….and it would look way better straight off the bat. As long as there was  a dark bit on one side of a panel and a light bit on the other with no obvious split line between the two it was done. If it’s all edges…I just built a few layers with a blood red highlight.

  • The less obvious panel/plates ( on the skull cap for example) have been chunkily layered using a few tones from the lazy blending streaks on my wet pallet….

Like i said it will practically disappear at the next phase, but it adds a bit of depth later on…

  • Any raised areas are also lightly highlighted with watered down ‘Blood Red’.
  • I have also added a wash of ‘Seraphim Sepia’ to his trousers.

As shown in the first photo:

The tongue was then painted layering the ‘Scab Red’ and then the ‘blood red’. A thin highlight of ‘Vallejo Model colour-Magenta-70.945’ was then added to the tip of the tongue. A wash of Citadel-‘BAAL RED’ ( Now ‘Crimson Carruborg’) was then dabbed on the tongue and moved around the mouth a bit.

I then blacked the teeth out with Vallejo Model Colour- Black-70.950. Along with a few other features like the steel rings between armour plates and his one good eye.

The Pitch!(Bases)

Before i get on with the steps on the Black orc, i should note that having done the messiest part of the paint job on the Reavers , I’ve based them.

I wanted the effect of a grass pitch, so i used a static grass applicator to create the below……

Really .....really f***ing irritating...the photos import in what ever orientation they feel like....Really .....really f***ing irritating...the photos import in what ever orientation they feel like....

It’s the first time I’ve used this thing, so i got a few 9V shocks and there is now static grass all over the place. I’m pretty chuffed with the result though.

I should also mention the base on Oaf’s feet….

.....face palm...........face palm......

I want the bases to reflect the home pitches… So naturally the the Greenskins are in the Badlands south of the the Empire.

  • Oaf’s Base was first covered in Citadel’s texture paint ‘AGRELLAN BADLAND’.
  • Once dry this was washed using Devlan Mud.( Now ‘Aggrax earth shade’).
  • To finish the dried mud it was lightly dry brushed with Vallejo Model Colour-Khaki -70.988
  • The pitch lines were done by dry brushing( Not too dry) with Vallejo Model Colour-White-70.951

The static grass tuft was from the Army Painter ‘Wasteland Tufts’ blister.

Tufts might become less of a requirement to buy with the applicator on the scene now, but i had these from before i bought it. Buuut….i don’t know whether i’ll ever be bothered to experiment with different flocks and static grasses to create specific styles…we’ll see.

Got bored....moved over to the Reikland Reavers....

So having base painted the Gouged Eye ‘BOYZ’….I felt like i needed a little break.

So i moved on to the Human team.

I still haven’t reached the point at which i decided to put this all into an OTT project yet…hence the complete lack of intermediate photos….

Anyway, here are the teams base painted. The Reikland Gents have even been given the first set of washes.

Both teams lined up in the dugout....only pretty boy 'OAF' looking fully kitted out in the background there. Both teams lined up in the dugout....only pretty boy 'OAF' looking fully kitted out in the background there.
Lets use the Blitzer as the close up example for now.Lets use the Blitzer as the close up example for now.
The Reavers aren't quite so appreciative of 'Booty' jokes as the Green skins, but here's a rear view. The Reavers aren't quite so appreciative of 'Booty' jokes as the Green skins, but here's a rear view.

Here’s the paint list:

Just like the Boyz’ of da’ Eye, these lad’s were primed with chaos black.(i like the matt finish of citadel’s cans over other primers, but i also sometimes use army painter)

I then base painted everything using:

  • Armour-Vallejo Model Colour-Prussian Blue-70.965
  • Cloth-Vallejo Model Colour-Stone Grey-70.884
  • Skin-Vallejo Model Colour-Saddle Brown-70.940
  • Boots/Gloves/front of Knee pads-Vallejo Model Colour-Leather Brown-70.871
  • Straps+Balls(…’ehem’)-Vallejo Model Colour-Hull Red-70.985
  • Brass/Goldy bits– Vallejo Model Colour-Old Gold-70.878
  • Steel – Vallejo Model Colour- Gunmetal Grey 70.863
  • White bits and throwers rag/cloth-Vallejo Model Colour-Light Sea Grey 70.973
  • Socks-Vallejo Model Colour-English Uniform-70.921

Once Base painted, i then gave them a wash using the following:

  • Armour-Citadel-Asurmen Blue ( Now ‘Drakenhof Nightshade’)
  • Skin-Citadel-Reikland Fleshshade
  • Boots/Gloves/front of Knee pads/ Gold Bits/ Steel Bits- Badab Black( Now ‘Nuln oil’)
  • Clothes-Citadel-Seraphim Sepia
  • Socks/leather straps-Citadel- Devlan Mud-(Now ‘Agrax Earth shade’)

Note: Havn’t washed the balls…..’ehem’….but i did pick out the seams with some Devlan Mud. Just dabbed them and allowed the wash to do it’s capillary action thing. Dragged it lightly where necessary.

I reckon…with a bit of basing these guys would be ‘tabletop ready’.

Note on compatibility charts.

I’m sure there’s a tonne of these links somewhere here on BOW, but here are a couple links to the resources i prefer.

The latter is especially good. It’s gives you a score system that gives you a rough idea of how close the paints are. Generally, i’ll have nose around DakkaDakka first though.

So here we go.

Having started with Citadel’s Chaos Black spray primer, i  base painted the entire miniature using:

  • Armour plates – Citadel Mechrite Red *
  • Skin – Vallejo Model Colour-Flat Green 70.968
  • Steel Trim etc- Vallejo Model Colour- Gunmetal Grey 70.863
  • Trousers- Vallejo Model Colour-Stone Grey 70.884
  • Socks- Vallejo Model Colour-Light Sea Grey 70.973
  • Leather-Vallejo Model Colour-Hull Red

I think the tongues and mouths will also need some attention before the teeth too. So I’ve initially gone in with a bit of Vallejo magenta, but this will probably change, i haven’t decided yet.

I then went on to apply this to the rest of the team.

‘*’ Can’t get ‘mechrite red’ any more . Mephiston Red is GW’s current version.

I’ve decided that i cant paint the teams in any other livery than the Gouged Eye and the Reikland Reavers.  Unimaginative i know, but having looked at some painted examples on google they look the nuts.

There is a guide in the back of the Blood Bowl rule book for both team. This gave me a starter for ten on the base colours, but i mostly prefer vallejo paints and i wanted to improve on the somewhat simplified schemes from the book.

The main boxed set contains two teams of twelve. Each team consists of two sets of six models. I started base colouring the orcs…and quickly decided that i’ll probably only bother with one set of six from either team….

Once i base coloured the entire six orc side ( paints to be announced) i got carried away and decided to paint the thrower as a test miniature….i didn’t record the process but i’ll attempt to summarise as i go along with the rest of the team…..Here is #1 from the Gouged eye….OAF KNEEBREAKA!!!!

OAF KNEEBREAKA.OAF KNEEBREAKA.

I’m moving on to the Black Orc Blocker. But this time i’ll record how i got there…
