Battle of Pelennor Fields – To Mordor & Beyond!

About the Project
This project will, hopefully, document my progress in painting the miniatures from the Battle of Pelennor Fields boxed set. I picked up the boxed set on the opening night of the OTT visitors centre. I was just going to buy the rulebook, but I thought the boxed set was wonderful value, so jumped it.
I've been painting away in my man cave and in the members suite, starting with the 36 Morannon Orcs included in the box. I also have some other Mordor bits and bobs that have been in my lead / plastic pile for far too long. I will perhaps get around to painting the Rohirrim but it's not my first priority.
I've not painted any Lord of the Rings minis in many years, and I'm a mediocre painter. If I get a painted force to a reasonable tabletop standard I will be happy. And maybe Sam will give me a game at some point.

Weapon and hand swaps on the Morannon Orcs
I have swapped a few weapons, gave an orc with a mohawk a hair cut and made a little captain with a foot up on a rock.
Mûmakil or Oliphant?
This Oliphant came from eBay many years ago. It was half built, plus missing a tail and an ear, the poor thing. But for 30 odd quid, it was worth adopting and nursing back to health. Tonight, I added the front platform, top layer and the Mahout tonight.
I am not keen on painting the sculpted base but I don’t think I can remove the the beastie from it, without major effort. So I will see if I can devise a plan for disguising that.
I added some rope, reigns at the front and a rope up to the top platform.
Has anyone else here tackled building and painting this beastie?
Also, does anyone know the name of the platform / castle on Elephants backs? I can’t remember and my Google-fu is weak tonight.
Making good progress with the first Sprue
These models are fairly simple cuplts, so I am getting through them quite quickly. I hope to get the first group finished over the weekend. This is the progress to date.
The Black Gate Opens
Well the first steps have been taken. I’ve built a sprue of the Morannon Orcs and started painting them. I’ve also started on a second sprue, with a few conversions to give more unique models. Hand / weapon and head swaps. I’m not sure if I’ll get fed up of converting them all yet.
I have opted for the standard colour scheme apart from using a yellow / green paint for the flesh as that matches other Orcs and Goblins that I have. You will see one of these perched on a paint pot at the back.
Early days yet but I will try to post up some closer shots when I have more painted.
