About the Project
With @oriskany s announcement that he's going to be publishing Darkstar (https://www.beastsofwar.com/project/1185947/) and after seeing @bloodstrike s project (https://www.beastsofwar.com/project/1305447/) I decided to star designing some ship's of my own. Basically I designed some ships for Darkstar a few weeks ago and I've decided to give them some names and a few fluffy extras. All of the ships are standard, the fluff is just for fun not for in game effects. With the fleet built and the basics of the game under my belt it was time to start a campaign.

Finally Painted my Fleet
Hopefully @oriskany and I can work something out where I can take some of his sketches and turn them into 3D Models for everyone out there to make their own fleets. No pressure Jim just an offer.
Aftermath
With the Prussian's gone the British are left to Salvage what they can from their Fleet. The Taskforce was Raised and has Dispatched Two Ships to Escort Battle Group Nassau back to Command for a Full Briefing.
The Surviving Ships Gathered on the Outskirts of the Anomaly and Watched the HMS Wills be Consumed.
As the Various Crews Formally Saluted the dying Ship the First Lieutenant of the Wills Approached Captain MacDonald.
He had Tears in his Eyes as he Spoke.
Commander Clark, Facing the Loss of his Third Ship, Disgrace and a Life of Failure Behind a Desk Elected to Remain at the Helm and was Incinerated along with the HMS Wills.
A Fiery Engagment
Battle Group Nassau has Finally Cornered the Prussians after they have Traversed an Anomolous Part of Space. With the British Trusting to their Skill and the Prussian's relying on their Guns the Stage is set for Battle Group Nassau's First Real Fight
The Fiery Astrological Bodies were treated as a Syglex Emitter with a strength of D6 that hits a random eligible facing.
Basically you can move through them with no penalty but they will damage you. This represents the flames boiling off a part of the ship that either got too close or was hit by a stray flare.
There was no penalty for being disabled in a hex that wasn’t entirely covered in an anomaly, the Ship’s crew can muster just enough thrust to get to the fringes of the danger zone.
Apologies for the lack of Pictures. Apparently as I was saving them a few replaced some earlier pics.
Battle Group Nassau lies in Ruins. Can the Crews pull themselves back into Shape? Will Captain MacDonald Survive this Blunder Physically and Politically?
The Prussian Fleet Revealed
The Prussian Fleet has Been Sighted. Captain MacDonald has been Presented this Report of their Strength
The 3D Ships Arrive
The Campaign is on Hold Until I do up some Profiles for the New Prussian Ships. We already Played a Game but it Felt Fitting to use the New Ships so it Will be a Week or Two Until I can get Together with Oriskany and Write up the Ships
The Mythical Von Zeiten Class Light Cruiser
Once Construction is Finished the Safety Wedge is Disconnected and Allowed to Float Away Before the Engines are Fired and the Ship Slides out of the Cradle. The Von Zieten is Ready for Duty.
Vorwarts Prussians
As Battlge Group Nassau Nears the Rendezvous with the Enemy Fleet who has been Sponsoring these Attacks they Attempt to Match Energy Signals with Known Enemy Variants
This is Part One of Two
A Way to Play Dark Star
I’ll put up the next battle report tomorrow but in the meantime I thought I should share this for anyone wanting to play some Dark Star but who doesn’t have the tools.
So far 25 people have downloaded the mod so hopefully there’s 25 people out there playing Dark Star.
Using the Steam “game” Tabletop Simulator I created a very quick and basic way to play Dark Star. If you’re interested in giving the awesome game a try you can get the mod here https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1636316528 .
The game has all the dice, tokens and boards you need to play and even has a copy of the Dark Star Rulebook so you don’t have to constantly switch between the game and the rulebook.
Battle Group Nassau
As Battle Group Nassau Recovers HMS Bounce Let's Take a Look at The Ships Themselves
Nassau was the Island on which Blackbeard and Co. Founded their Pirate Republic. I Think it's a Fitting Name for a Battle Group Tasked with (for now) Hunting Down "Pirates"
As the HMS Bounce Prepares to Leave they Transmit their Intercepted Messages to the HMS Burnaby who Manages to Decipher Something About a Rendezvous with a Heavy Cruiser. It's Time to Crash the Rendezvous and Find Out which Nation has been Sponsoring these "Pirate" Attacks
In Defence of HMS Bounce
While Searching for the Remaining Pirates Battle Group Nassau Receives an Emergency Distress Call
When Battle Group Nassau arrived at the last known Location of the HMS Bounce they found it almost totally disabled but no sign of any enemy ships. Then as they were making their approach seven “Baroness” class ships were detected making a beeline for them. The Defence of HMS Bounce was imperative but so was finding out what these “Pirates” are after.
The Third Battle of El Teb
"Action Stations. Action Stations. Clear for Action"
The HMS Burnaby starts the game at Velocity 0 in the centre of a 40 x 40 board. The “Pirates” will move onto the board from the “Southern” edge and does not know which edge the British Destroyers will move on from. The Royal Navy get to choose their table edge after the “Pirates” have moved.
The British Destroyers move on at Velocity 12 from the “Northern” edge, the Pirate Gunboats raced ahead at speed 30 anticipating the British would move on from the “Southern” board edge and take the “Pirates” in the rear. They were wrong.
The Burnaby stirs it’s engines to life and starts to turn back towards the Destroyers who came into the conflict at a sensible Velocity of 12.
All four of the “Pirate” Gunboats paid for their failure to predict the Royal Navy’s point of entry as all four were destroyed with ease by the Destroyers.
The Royal Navy took up defensive positions in-between the HMS Burnaby and the “Pirates” as the Burnaby crippled the engines of one “Pirate” Ship and left it floating helplessly in Space.
The Royal Navy quickly dealt with the remaining “Pirates” although the Burnaby had it’s engines partially damaged so they couldn’t pursue their defeated foe who managed to slink away with what remained of their fleet.
None of the British Fleet had suffered any permanent damage but as they were unable to pursue the enemy they sent a message back to Admiral Cuthbert.
“Greater enemy forces than expected. Unable to pursue. Requesting reinforcements”
“Acknowledged. Dispatching HMS Swedish Knight. You will form Battle Group Nassau and eliminate the enemy”
Captain Jacob MacDonald and his Heavy Cruiser the HMS Swedish Knight are en-route to what is now his new Battle Group ready to take on these foe and end these petty raids.
What force of “Pirates” could ever stand up to the might of a Heavy Cruiser not to mention the rest of Battle Group Nassau?
Prologue
HMS Burnaby Continues it's Tour of Duty Monitoring the Planet Known as "New Khartoum"
Established three hundred years ago “Khartoum” was settled by the HMS Gordon which gave the planet it’s unofficial nickname among the men of Task Force Trafalgar.
High in orbit above the planet the aging Commander Herbert Baker commands HMS Burnaby as it monitors the surrounding space for any hostile ships.
Baker has lost two ships during his career, both light cruisers, and has been more or less permanently relegated to duties like this one.
Sixteen days ago Commander Baker was attacked by three gunboats from an unidentified, non-governmental, faction. Baker easily defeated the three ships but in response to the attack and anticipating further attacks Collingwood Squadron Leader Admiral William Cuthbert has dispatched the twin Destroyers HMS Burke and HMS Wills, both of the Royal Australian Navy on loan to the Mother Country, to assess the situation and if necessary prevent the destruction of yet another one of Commander Baker’s ships.
Before the Twin Destroyers Arrived Commander Baker Detected Unrecognised Ships Approaching His Location at Great Speed
HMS Swedish Knight
Captained by the Honourable Captain Jacob MacDonald
The leader of the group and the largest ship, the HMS Swedish Knight.
The HMS Swedish Knight is a behemoth when compared to it’s subordinates but is equally as able to carry out the maneuvers required in the heat of combat. Angled sideways thrusters enable the ship to quickly roll over and present it’s more formidable armour to the fore while it’s experimental torpedo systems mounted at the front of the ship in hexagonal compartments are designed to be temporarily ejected and held in the cylindrical cut outs in the forward block where they are held until after the current battle.
The Torpedo block descends in line with the ship’s hull when the ship is in combat and when a torpedo station has fired all it’s tubes the entire station can be discarded in the recess and replaced by a fresh station.
This is a costly process to reverse both in time and manpower and so is reserved for only the most desperate circumstances.
HMS Swedish Knight is named after the British Admiral Sir Sidney Smith.
For more on Sir Sidney I can do no better than the mighty Lindybeige.
A British Naval Officer who’s most famous Naval Battle was fighting for the Swedes (which is where he gained his Swedish Knighthood, he would later get a proper British Knighthood) followed by his involvement in the Siege of Acre where he halted Napoleon’s advance, crushed the French armies spirit, negotiated a universally accepted peace treaty that all sides agreed with and that badly hurt Napoleon.
Except the British refused to acknowledge the treaty since he wasn’t an official diplomat and so they fought a battle, got a lot of people killed including Kleber (a very powerful opponent of Napoleon who was loved by the men) and then all sides just adopted his treaty word for word anyway.
HMS Pellew
Captained by the Honourable Captain Edward Hornblower
The Second of the two Light Cruisers. The HMS Pellew
The HMS Pellew is the more all round firepower Light Cruiser of the two and has older guns than it’s sister the HMS June. This being the older model the torpedo’s are stored in a singular triangular bay in front of the main gun turrets rather than elsewhere on the ship.
The HMS June had provisions for several smaller ships to be launched from it’s Port and Starboard hangers but the majority of the bays are currently used to store ammunition and cargo and the ships can’t immediately take off without difficulty.
The HMS Pellew is named after Viscount Edward Pellew who was an Admiral during the Napoleonic Wars.
HMS June
Captained by the Honourable Captain Earl Howe
One of the Light Cruisers the HMS June
The HMS June is the more Broadside oriented Light Cruiser of the two and has slightly more modern guns than it’s sister the HMS Pellew. This being the newer model the torpedo’s are stored in triangular bays above the main gun turrets rather than elsewhere on the ship and moving them enabled the HMS June to increase their cargo storage capacity and increase their ammunition reserves.
The HMS June also has provisions for several smaller ships to be launched from it’s Port and Starboard hangers.
The HMS June is named after the Glorious First of June, a Naval action during the Napoleonic Wars where Admiral Lord Howe defeated the French Fleet. The British used similar tactics that Nelson would later use at Trafalgar, punching through rather than running parellell with the enemy.
This is the only ship named after a Battle rather than a Person in the Fleet. It replaced the crippled HMS Lord Howe which fought which such valour in it’s last engagement that the HMS June was named in it’s honour.
HMS Burnaby
Captained by the Honourable Commander Herbert Baker
The HMS Burnaby was the first Royal Navy Ship in the sector and has been on station since the pre-colonial times.
The HMS Burnaby is outfitted with two enormous generators that give the ship a near endless supply of power to run it’s communications arrays and scanners.
The Bridge has two retractable observation decks that allow the ship’s crew to keep a watch in every direction while orbiting a planet or escorting a supply ship.
The HMS Burnaby continues in it’s observation role and mainly operates on the fringes of the system but with the sighting of the approaching American Fleet it has been recalled to the main squadron.
The HMS Burnaby is named after the Legendary Colonel Frederick Gustavus Burnaby, a British Officer in the Victorian Era Burnaby was THE Victorian adventurer. He flew hot air balloons, he traveled all over Russia, Persia and Afghanistan including while the British and Russian’s were at war, he accompanied Gordon to Khartoum (the first time) and managed to just sort of tag along with the Camel Corps as they attempted to relieve Gordon in Khartoum.
He was killed at the Battle of Abu Klea and is death ended the era of the romantic Victorian hero gallivanting around the world totally bulletproof. An apt name for such a maverick ship.
HMS Wills
Captained by the Honourable Commander William Clark
The second of the two Destroyers is the HMS Wills an older Commonwealth Class Destroyer.
The Wills is older than it’s sister ship. It was designed before the Royal Navy decided it’s destroyers needed more power and so it’s permanent external generators were installed after it was already in service. The only place left for the generators was at the front of the ship, the only issue with this placement is that it blocked the two forward guns from firing directly forwards meaning the HMS Wills relies more on broadsides than other ships.
The HMS Wills acts as a support vessel for the HMS Burke and the two operate in unison as forward scouts for the rest of their squadron.
The Rear gun turret is also limited to firing broadsides thanks to the addition of a large hanger for transporting colonists. At the time of the HMS Wills being upgraded there was a need for more space for the colonists heading to the system. Since the HMS Wills was in the dry-dock it was decided to house the colonists aboard it. Now the colonists have disembarked the former transport space is being used as a makeshift hospital and fighter repair station.
The HMS Wills is named after the famous Australian Explorer William John Wills who was the second in command of the famous Burke and Wills expedition who attempted to travel across Australia from South to North.
Both Burke and Wills died during the expedition although the expedition itself was a success.
HMS Burke
Captained by the Honourable Commander Robert Lewis
The first of the two Destroyers is the HMS Burke a Commonwealth Class Destroyer.
The Burke is more suited for deterance than it’s sister ship. It possesses a single large armoured gun housing rather than several smaller turrets meaning it can bring a large amount of guns to bear quickly against an enemy which is it’s main defence in chance engagements with other ships of similar size but gives the HMS Burke no real edge in larger engagements.
The Front of the ship has a large circular radar like apparatus that enables the Burke to transmit signals quickly to the other ships in the sector.
On the back of the HMS Burke are two additional, permanent exterior Generators that provide extra power and allow the HMS Burke to operate for longer without needing to return for resupply.
The HMS Burke is named after the famous Australian Explorer Robert O’Hara Burke who lead the famous Burke and Wills expedition who attempted to travel across Australia from South to North.
Both Burke and Wills died during the expedition although the expedition itself was a success.
Task Force Trafalgar
Defending Her Majesty's Colonies in the far reaches of Space are the men of Task Force Trafalgar
Task Force Trafalgar has two main groups.
The Frist known as Nelson’s Squadron is lead by the HMS Nelson.
The Second known as Collingwood’s Squadron is lead by the HMS Collingwood.
The Ship’s are named after Admiral Horatio Nelson and his second in Command at Trafalgar, Admiral Cuthbert Collingwood.
I’ve decided to focus on the lead elements of Collingwood’s Squadron. (Collingwood being my favourite of the two Admirals)
The element consists of Two Destroyers, a Reconnaissance Destroyer, Two Light Cruiser and a Heavy Cruiser.
