About the Project

Taking part in the Space Hulk Tactics Hobby Challenge! My goal is to complete paint a squad of Blood Angel Terminators and a secondary goal of painting a squad of Deathwing Terminators. Using this project as motivation to get projects that have been sitting on my shelf done.

As you may have noticed, there was a huge gap of time between my posts.  This was due to unforeseen changes taking over a lot of my hobby time.  I have been able to get back to painting pretty consistently.

With the end of the contest I still want to continue this project.  This is because I haven’t ever completed a squad to this level of detail, let alone two!  I hope you follow my journey to completing these terminators.

Deathwing Red Details

The Deathwing have their guns and various decorations painted in a rich red color.  I achieved this effect with the following steps:

  1. Base the red details with Citadel Base Mephiston Red.
  2. Wash the recesses of the details with Citadel Wash Agrax Earthshade.
  3. Clean up excess wash with Citadel base Mephiston Red.
  4. Edge highlight the raised details with Citadel Layer Evil Sunz Scarlet.

Three of the Deathwing terminators have wings as details on their armor.  I carefully basecoated the feather like areas in Citadel Base Abaddon Black and accentuated each feather with Citadel Layer Eshin Grey.

For both the Blood Angels and Deathwing terminators I painted the purity seals the same.

  1. Base the wax in Citadel Base Screamer Pink and the paper in Citadel Base Zandri Dust.
  2. Wash the entire purity seal in Citadel Wash Agrax Earthshade.
  3. Highlight the wax with Citadel Layer Pink Horror and the paper with Citadel Layer Ushabti Bone. Be sure to accentuate the difference between the edges and raised areas for the best effect.

Painting Bleached Bone

To start repainting the Deathwing terminators, I used an Iwata Eclipse HP-CS airbrush at approximately 20 bars of air pressure to spray a slightly diluted layer of Citadel Zandri Dust.

The next steps are:

  1. In the recesses paint Citadel Shade Seraphim Sepia.
  2. Go back over the areas where the shade may have seeped outside of the recesses with Citadel Base Zandri Dust.
  3. Highlight the raised edges with a slightly chunky coat of Citadel Layer Ushabti Bone.
  4. If you prefer to go the extra mile finish up with a fine highlight of Citadel Layer Screaming Skull.

I started by painting the Blood Angels first and was starting to paint the black under armor and noticed how difficult it was not to accidentally get Citadel Base Abaddon Black on the completed armor.  So for the Deathwing terminators I painted the under armor prior to Step 2.

As I stated in my previous entry, I basecoated the terminators with Citadel Spray Primer Chaos Black.  Following that I painted three to four coats of Citadel Base Mephiston Red.

Here are the next steps:

  1. In the recesses paint Citadel Shade Agrax Earthshade.
  2. Go back over the areas where the shade may have seeped outside of the recesses with Citadel Base Mephiston Red.
  3. Highlight the raised edges with a slightly chunky coat of Citadel Layer Evil Sunz Scarlet.

If you are just going for a nice tabletop quality I would recommend stopping after the third step.  If you want to go further add an additional highlight of Citadel Layer Fire Dragon Bright.

Who remember’s the previous edition starter set for Warhammer 40,000: Dark Vengeance?  Great! Well turns out that I had taken a crack at painting the Deathwing terminators in that set and … well they don’t look quite like the models I am painting now.

My goal with the Deathwing is to re-paint completely starting with the bone color and working my way up.  I will be covering exactly how I approach painting these lovely miniatures as soon as…

I complete these Blood Angel terminators.  These terminators are from the Deathstorm kit that Gamesworkshop released as part of the Shield of Baal campaign.  The farthest I got in painting them was basecoating them black and painting a three to four coats of Citadel Base Mephiston Red.

I hope you enjoy this journey as I take you through how I paint each of these units of terminators in a Space Hulk inspired painting spree.
