From this angle you can see the five o'clock shadow I was able to paint on his face. A first which I achieve with extremely watered down Eshin Grey. From this angle you can see the five o'clock shadow I was able to paint on his face. A first which I achieve with extremely watered down Eshin Grey.

Ludus Magnus: Septimus and Otho Mentulus

As these two gladiators are both from Ludus Magnus I chose to paint them with a purple spot color.  Purple is the color most often associated with the Praetorian Guard of Rome, which is the elite of the elite infantry.

This is probably the most technically challenging miniature I have painted.  Prior to this project I had never painted sheer (see-through/semi-transparent) cloth before.  Additionally this project challenged me to paint smooth female skin not just on faces. I had painted skin previously with lots of Reikland flesh but this required careful blending of various skintone colors to gradually get the correct color.
