After School 40k – Tyranids

About the Project
My son has just started his new senior school and every day tells me something he loves about, well this week topped it when he came home and said "Dad next week they are starting a 40k after-school club" but then he says "but we don't play 40k and we don't have an army" So I can't let that stand, so this will be a quick project to get a 40k army up and running, my son wants Tyranids so let's do this. Time is short so I am going to keep it tabletop, I am starting with the start collecting box and we will go from there. If you have any tips on building a list/army or what should come next after the start collecting box please do leave a comment.

Another tabletop monster
Rescued this guy from eBay, bunch of broken parts which I tried to fix. Mixed results but again fine for tabletop and my Son is very happy with his force so far
One sitting
Time for this big boy to join the force, happy that I managed to get him done in one sitting tonight. Simple but will look good with the rest on the table.
Focus becomes Kill Team
So my sons after school club is in full swing and the focus has switch from 40k to kill team.
No compaints from me as there is a lot less to paint.
So all I needed to do is add some Genestealers and some Termagants and the kill team is complete.
James is a happy chap, I will finish the rest in time for when we ready to up to full 40K
Couple of hours later
One weekender show and a bit of fallout let’s play you can get a lot done.
A week in and phase two begins
So we got the start force down on the table now it is time to build it out. Still going for speed so I want to get these done in the next couple of days.
Start collecting done, good place to start
ok, so from starting a couple of days ago the starter force is ready for the table. James can take these into school for some entry-level games I am sure we will add to the force.
Progress
So today I added the highlights to the purple flesh, bone areas like teeth and claws, and the odd details here and there like tongues etc.
for what has been a weekend project so far they are looking ok and I think I will have it finished tomorrow as all I need to do is the shell highlights and basing.
i think my son will be happy with them.
shopping
Ok so I need to think about what comes next, no real idea about 40 or Tyranids but I think potentially I can’t go wrong with these… and of course the book.
eye ache!
So last night I sat down to get as much done as I could in one night, and this is the result.
I now need to go round again with washes, highlights and the finishing touches but for a project that only started a day ago and this is what I would say is about 6-7 hours in I can see it taking shape.
I painted for about 5 hours solid last night and I only stopped as my right eye really started to ache, I can still feel it this morning
Paints used
Just a quick one, these are the paints used on the tester model. I thinned some of them down for the airbrush as the purple layer paints are very thick out of the pot.
For the basing, I kept it very simple with a texture paint and dry brush to hopefully get the alien (mars) surface. I then picked up this Alien grass tufts which I think contrast ok. Again it needs to be quick.
Tester Model
Ok so I have the old start collecting box, I see they now do a new version with different models so I think I will probably also pick that up.
I grabbed a couple of colours and within about an hour or so had done this guy (minus the base). I think it works but let me know.
Mostly airbrushed for speed, I will get the colours and post them.
