About the Project
My flatmates and I finally finished the Dungeon Saga boxed quests and the Return of Valandor expansion with the Vanilla characters. For Warloard of Galahir we decided to use the Adventure's Companion and create our own... well their own, i'm the Overlord. So I have a box of all the stuff from the kickstarter and two flatmates chomping at the bit to get gaming..... So I have some painting to do

Prep work before painting
So I haven’t even taken the minis out of their bags yet… how long ago was this Kickstarter?
Bit of a miscast on one of the Goblins. I think have an idea what can be done to fix this… and make it look a bit different from the other Goblins with the same pose.
Lots of bendy bits needing straightening. Time to get dipping in hot water (this can also be an easy way to add some variety to the positioning of models if possible. In this case that was not really an option (in the base set the Zombie Trolls can be changed a little by dipping them and moving their arms).
For the Goblin with the miscast spear I cut away the rest of the weapon and had a rummage in my bits box for a knife that would look ok…. think it looks alright, we’ll see when painted
Undercoat time
Now that the minis are clean and don’t have bendy swords it’s time to get on with undercoating.
As I am planning on speed painting these I am going for a white undercoat. The plan is to use Army Painter Quickshade and that gives the best result on lighter colours (I have found even a grey undercoat can cause problems).
So time to build a makeshift spraying booth…
Time to get spraying
Some light nostalgia while waiting for drying between coats…
My first ever White Dwarf!
If I remember correctly you sent off a self addressed envelope as directed on the back of the Heroquest quest book and received a how to paint guide and then the back of that told you to send a pound or something to an address and you got sent the current issue of White Dwarf (times before the internet!)
Sprayed and ready to begin! You may notice a piece from Zealot Miniature’s Twisting Catacombs Kickstarter in there as well
Lets get cracking! Trolls & Mawbeasts first
First things first I painted all the metal areas black (or at least I thought I did, I kept finding bits i’d missed later on)
Mawbeasts first.
I painted their manes a light brown mix (most of my paints are 20 years old from older GW ranges with some army painter stuff thrown in).
I did the lips black and the gums red
the skin was a light coat of the Army Painter soft tone wash applied as a glaze
and guess what… ready for Quickshade
Next the Trolls
Again the idea is to go for light colours so the Quickshade works best. But on the larger models i’m happy to do highlights afterwards, so a few darker colours are going to be fine.
To add a bit of variation, one of the Trolls has a Buckler made from a GW Ogre belly plate, and the end of the club has become a bit of base decoration.
My Quickshade had developed a thick skin and went on a bit too thick, just as well I was happy to highlight afterwards
Followed by some Matt Varnish the next morning, and then minor highlights and a black coat around the base
The Orcs
For the Orcs I did a coat of Goblin green over all the skin and Chainmail on all the metal. The rest of the model got a light wash of Army Painter Soft Tone ink.
The clothing and fur is a random jumble of White, Bestial Brown, Vermin Brown (pretty sure these colours are long unavailable), Ushabti Bone and a variety of mixes on the palette between all these colours. This keeps them all within a theme but not carbon copies of each other.
and Quickshade time. This time I thinned my Quickshade with a bit of White Spirits. I also found out that oven cleaner gel is the best way to clean this stuff (and gloss paint incidentally) off my brushes. My varnishing brush is like new again!
Brief interlude
My Flatmate’s wouldn’t wait any longer
We ran the first mission… twice, as I crippled one of their characters!
Mwah hahaha ha… ha!
They created:
- Batano the Salamander Wizard
- Sean Manchester the Halfling Demon Hunter
- Palladino the Naiad Ranger
- Baraduke the Gladewalker Paladin
I didn’t like playing with two unpainted models… so
The Gribblies so far:
Goblins & Orclings
Time to continue with the Goblins
I started with a light wash with Soft Tone ink (but not on the Orclings).
These smaller chaps could take a bit more colour and so I added red and blue to my palette.
…. and quickshade
For my basing i’m using a homemade resource…
At my desk at work there is a mechanical pencil sharpener. I collected a big bag of shavings and divided them into small piles which I dyed. One dark green for long grass (not used here), one red, one orange and one left as is.
Thrundak the Boss
Right with Orcs, Goblins, Mawbeasts and Trolls done it was time to finish it all up and get ready for a few games.
I wanted to stay with the same technique but give him just a little hint of something to make him stand out…
I thought I’d have my first attempt at tartan
I went for a sky blue cloak and drew lines of a darker blue with thin white lines as the secondary part to the pattern.
and then back to Quickshade. I feel this muddied it up quite a bit, but that’s fine by me for a purloined cloak.
and then the bases of the Heroes and terrain piece to keep with the theme
Next i’ll get a few in game shots…
and in a few month’s i’ll end up doing it all again with the Infernal Crypts minis
