About the Project

The Stone Templar came into being following an unknown battle between a Black Templar crusader force and a Necron host upon a world now quarantined by the Holy Inquisition. Since all records of the battle have been locked away all we know for sure is that roughly forty marines returned after a victory seen the Necrons lord on the planet defeated and the host disappearing into a tomb complex which remains undiscovered (despite at least three inquisitorial investigations) Upon their return, the High Marshall praised the survivors for thier fervor and determination, and were granted the honor of continuing their crusade upon the Necron threat in the sub-sector with total independence to persecute their holy work how they seen fit. The High Marshall sanctioned the formation of the Stone Templar, allowing them to choose their heraldry and iconography. They were given permission to retain the templar cross (now painted in a bone colour) while their armour was painted grey with bone edging. They were granted an initial boost of manpower and equipment to allow them to deploy two standard sized companies while the most veteran marine, a Lucardo Rhinehart, form the survivors became the first company captain and the defacto “Master” of the chapter. Thus the Stone Templar returned to the sub-sector to become the hunters of the deadly Necron, seeing it as their holy mission to cleanse the cluster of planets from the threat of these mysterious, unholy constructs. Over the course of six decades, the new Templars studied what they could find out about their foe and, in one case, worked alongside the Ordo Xenos during an investigation of the planet where thier chapters creation was forged, providing the agents with valuable information of the battle that took place there. This was to be the last time the Templars would set foot upon the planet as they were met with another foe, the Eldar, who tried to convince the inquisitorial party to abandon their investigation. After several attempts at diplomacy, the eldar forces, collectively known now as the Tiel-Lyn, declared they would shut down the Imperial snooping by force, and thus the Templar were to change forever. This Kill Team is based on the battle called "Tiel's Folly" This is where the Stone Templar ceased to exist before being re-founded upon the end of the Indomitus Crusade. This represents the final stand of the Stone Templar marines over 300 years before the return of Guilliman.

Building the models was a lot of fun. Deciding on poses and equipment was a refreshing break from my other armies. Knowing that these guys are the “last” of their kind, it would make sense to me that they would go into battle with the best equipment they had left. So I went all out on adding grenades, combat weapons, armour and so on.

Assembling the Troops!

Just having a holstered pistol and blade on some of the models gives them a sense of importance and presence. Both those parts were taken from Mk4 Heresy marines kit. Just because I thought they fitted nicely.

I particularly like the hooded heads for the scouts. It’s something I wish was on the standard kit, but it works well here.

Next step.. priming and beginning the painting!

The Stone Templar, as they will appear in Kill Team, are the regular Astartes. I am building this Kill Team to tell the story of their last stand, 300 years before Guilliman’s return with the Primaris.

As such, this gives me a chance to model some of the original members of the Templar with all their decoration and “crusader” attitude.

To do this I have gone with two Space Marine box sets. The Space Marine Scouts with Sniper rifles, and a box of Space Marine Sterngarde Veterans. I love both of these kits and have always wanted an excuse to roll them into the Templars. But since I am keeping the current army as a pure Primaris force I will look to Kill Team to give me the narrative angle I want to use these models.

Gathering the Parts

Conversions and List.

To give my Templars the look I want, I went to Spellcrow for some head swaps and leg swaps. Since the Black Templar upgrade sets are hard to come across and are looking a bit dated. Using the head swaps for the scouts and the legs for the marines, I will hopefully get some unique looking characters in combination with the two plastic kits.

Anyway, on to the 100pt list. I formed this as a Battle forged Kill Team:

Brother Sergeant Tylrios: Grav Pistol, Chainsword (Leader lv2) : 18

Brother Tarados: Heavy Bolter (Gunner, heavy lvl2) : 20

Brother Danalus: Melta Gun (Gunner, heavy lv1) : 16

Brother Renson: Boltgun (Veteran lv1): 12

Brother Ardeen: Boltgun (Veteran lv1): 12

Scout Brother Drendaris: Sniper Rifle (Sniper lv1): 11

Scout Brother Ludon: Sniper Rifle( Sniper lv1): 11

100pt.

I think this is the best way for my Kill Team to be formed, as even if I want to run them in a progressive campagin, I have the weapons, names and models already nailed down the way I want them. So the list was more of a guide.

On to Building!
