About the Project

I took the plunge late March and got myself a preassembled Prusa i3 mk3. As there was a backlog of orders I received my package mid May or so. Having no prior experience wit 3D-printing and the “electronics hobby” I hope for a easy to use printer which would not have me going into the nitty-gritty of the machine but making it possible for me to focus on the actual prints. On this the Prusa defenitely delivered, simple unpack and calibrating one axis and I was off printing. Much, much better than I had feared….

Printable Scenery - Port Tavern

A Port Tavern from Printable Scenery printed using 0.1mm resolution. Consists of four larger pieces and a few smaller ones, total printing time was about 300h or so. I intend to use it for Blood and Plunder, but I think it should work well for WW2 in Italy/North Africa too.

As can be seen I swapped filament during the printing of this and a bit of warning here. The orange is new “normal” PLA from Prusa (not Prusament) and it is of noticably lower quality compared to the same product bought about 9 months ago (before Prusament). It seems that Prusa is promoting their own product, so I would avoid buying the “normal” PLA from them. It does not have quality enough to motivate the hassle with importing in my mind. Personally, I will be getting Prusament PLA instead, but that comes at a premium.

Printed a Long boat from Printable Scenery, a quick little print. I used 0.1 mm resolution and standard PLA-filament from Prusa. It is currently WIP, I am going for a rough, aged wooden surface…. essentially I want to try to paint it without using any browns! 🙂

Printable Scenery - Wizard Tower from the

Completed painting the wizard tower from Printable Scenery. It is a big piece, more than 35cm top to bottom and printed, without a single problem, on a Prusa i3 mk3. It comes in four major parts and have open and closeable doors, each part took about 60h to print. I am happy with the result, this was the first time I really used oils for weathering a larger terrain piece and it worked as intended.

Printable Scenery - Wizard Tower from the

Just completed printing out the wizard tower (had to put Gandalf the White there :-)) from Printable Scenery. It was printed using 0.1mm layers in PLA. It is the tallest piece from their Kickstarter so far and it looks really good. The picture is the tower as it looks off the printer with some smaller cleaning with a craft knife.

Movement tray - Own design in TinkerCAD

TinkerCAD is a great, free, online CAD drawing program which also persons (like me) with a very limited CAD background can use. Here I designed a movement tray (120mm wide, the slots are 40.3mm by 20.3mm) for my light cavalry. Note that I added magnet holes which fit perfectly to the magnets. This is really a way to be creative and create custom and flexible trays.

It was printed using a brim of 5mm (as the shape is rather rectangular, just to be safe) and 0.2mm layers. I will continue the painting of this in the “Historical minis” project.

The leftmost piece is printed with 0.05mm, the other two using 0.1mm. As the piece is quite small it could be worth the time printing it with the highest resolution. The painting was done with as much airbrush as possible to get shading and such, ropes were washed using Army Painter Strong tone. The Tribal Tower was printed on my Prusa i3 mk3 using PLA with 0.1mm resolution. The tower printed rather well and took about 200h or so to complete. As can be seen in the first two pictures it is a big piece and in the last picture some defects have been removed (such as stringing and minor issues with the sharp horns). I experimented a bit with greenstuff as well. All in all the tower is now ready for the airbrush.

The painted and completed Port House. Each piece was painted individually (the interiors are also painted, but they are generally rather open and functional) using the airbrush a lot. Some of the wood was done using a 4mm brush (so large!), some washes has been there as well, but I think it worked less well. For highlights I tried drybrushing, but swapped to more edge highlighting in order to avoid emphasising the print lines.

The Vomiting TreeThe Vomiting Tree

Here is a Printable Scenery “Vomiting tree” printed without supports using 0.1mm resolution. If you look closely you can see the print lines, but really it is difficult to see on the actual tabletop so quite ok for being an organic model.

The Port House from Printable Scenery printed using 0.1mm layers and a 5mm brim, sliced using the Prusa 3DSlic3r software. The printing time was in the order of 150h. The brim was needed to help with shrinkage as the model is rather rectangular so additional adhesion was required to combat warpage.
