Putting it together
I had to design the gallows to fit right. In reality they hook a carpenter 6 hours to build and the noise kept the prisoners awake. One warder was arrested for climbing over the gallows while drunk after trying to return to work after a pub session. 
In 1844 12 people died in the crush to see a hanging. During the wait for the hanging people's hats were stolen and tossed across the crowd. Some people were even forced into the air and thrown about like involuntary crows surfing. More police would attend later hangings 
Between 10 men were hanged on the steps the last one in 1864 and the biggest gap between them was 16 years as the victorians only really hanged murderers
As folk began to speak against the practice a sheet was put up so when the condemned dropped they vanished from view which made it a bit pointless. They also placed hessian savks against the railings so the body didn't bang against the bars
