Malifaux Title Masters
A different kind of spy
The next title box is Lucius and Nexus. Nexus is actually fairly new, so I am doing their crews bases for the first time. Lucius is a proper fancy lad, so his bases are done up in marble flooring, fancy carpet, and other stuff you might find in a manor.
Note that this version of Nexus is 3 kids… don’t ask questions.
To start out, I cut out some round inserts for the marble floors, and then got myself a used dryer sheet. I used the airbrush to shoot some white and black through the sheet, to create a nice marble pattern onto the disc. For some reason these ones came out a bit duller than the last time I did these, but its close enough.
For the carpet, I got some of this fancy decorative paper from a craft store. I put some black paper underneath it to add a border, and then colored in the white bits with red paint to give it a more regal look. It makes a somewhat convincing carpet to lay over the marble floors.
Nexus is actually a parasitic hive mind entity that infests different beings and is used as a spy ring. The parasites look like bugs, so I wanted to do a creepy bug infested base scheme. I got some of these 3d printed bits from epic basing. They look like termite mounds, little egg clutches and creepy veiney floor coverings.
I did the bases by sticking some of these bits down randomly, mixing in some clay to give the bases some height and texture. After priming them, I painted them all with a beige, and then used colored washes to give it some more interest. Looking at pictures of bug hives, they tend to have lots of different colors to them, and I wanted it to look gross. I did the eggs in a pale pink to make them stand out.
The last step was to hit them with Green Stuff worlds spider web serum through the airbrush. I wasn’t super happy with the effect because it wasnt as stringy as I wanted, it just covered the 3d printed bits in a hazy coating, but it looks convincing enough to sell the idea I think.
The paint jobs on the models were pretty straight forward. Lucius is just all ninja spy man looking. Cavatica has a buggy face that was fun to paint.
The nexus kids were interesting because they combine normal looking human bits, with creepy tentacles and bug legs. I found the easiest way to do this was to use some washes to blur the transition between each type of flesh, and then use a dry brush to make the bug limbs stand out a bit more.
Some finished shots here of the manor bases with some decorations on them. I added some spider webs to the vase on Cavaticas base to make it work for both schemes.
There’s also a big family picture of the entire Nexus keyword since I was working on them at the same time.
No Nexus video yet since she has very little actual lore at this point, but Lucius is one of the most popular characters in the fiction, so buckle up for quite a long ride.
