The Great Grey Massacre.
The Beginning of the End?
These Glade Guard Archers are the second of two big projects I started back in 2013. The first was 99 High Elf Spearman (sadly at 58 painted so far and holding) and the second was 55 Glade Guard Archers. No fancy techniques on these as many were painted 10 years ago. My first and last dalliance with spray varnish meant that 20 had to be stripped and repainted. Which delayed things considerably, then the fact that my old flat was so damp ridden spray priming models was a long and ultimately fruitless process meant I had to switch to brush priming. I used Cocktail sticks to make the banner pole and the musician was a repair to a broken bow. I did in 2017 get the remaining 40 a third painted but they sat untouched for years after that when my initial plan to use Colour Shift paints to denote the unit leaders didn’t work. On a bit of a role in terms of completing new and outstanding projects I returned to them and in batches of 5-10 models I smashed them out in between other projects as a pallet cleanser. Eventually I subtly denoted the unit leaders with silver bows as an ode to the Numenorean Steel Bowman of Tolkien’s World.
It is a simple paint scheme however they were my first foray back into painting and to be honest I am very much minded to keep basic troops quick and simple to paint whilst spending a little more time on character models.

The usual satin varnish and Goblin Green base. The movement trays are the own GW ones with flock and rubberised steel sheet stuck on. NB I use magnetic strip to magnetise my bases which slightly widens the units footprint. This mean you need to raise the height of the trays base to properly fit all the models on it. The banners are templates from the old GW books enlarged coloured in with pencil crayon and then scanned and reprinted to the required size.
