I always prefer to get most of the base textured before painting so it all ties together with the miniature. For the lowest layer of ground and to make a good start I used Thick Mud from Vallejo. This tub happed to be Russian Mud but really the colour wouldn’t matter as it would be painted over.

I recently picked up a tub from North Star of Krautcover basing material, specifically a tub of Tales From a Forest Moon. A mix of small stones, wood chips and a few bits of green. I thought this would be great to put on after the mini is painted as a final texture for a forest floor. Unfortunately I found a lot of the pieces are a little too large. I can either try to cut the pieces smaller or using tweezers individually select and place suitable pieces down. Someone in the Discord suggested using a blender to give the material a wiz but I’d have to remove any stones first as it may spell the blender’s doom.

Anyway, once the mud was dry (ie overnight) it was time to get Halford’s finest out and give all the models a spray.

I then touched up any areas the spray missed (and bits I might have touched) using brush on primer. I mixed up light grey and black to match the tone of the spray primer.

Overall I quite like the rough effect of the mud texture now that it has paint on. Some parts have shrunk but any holes showing through can be hidden later by the above mentioned basing material.
Next will be to give a some of the models a light drybrush, particularly the treemen to bring that great texture out.
