In No Particular Order: Kitbashing, painting and mini projects
The History Thing
I want to take a moment to talk about my relationship with history as it came up a few times during my Bolt Action project. For the record I like history and find all of it interesting, however I have no great compunctions to deep dive into the minutiae of every era, however should I stumble across little nuggets and factoids during the course of a project , then great. Historical gaming I was always a little wary of because of the gatekeepers and button counters in the community. Similar reasons also keep me enthusiastically disinterested in GW games, along with the behaviours of the company and it’s prices.
I seem to be unconsciously following a course of replicating the toy soldiers I had as a kid. Airfix, Matchbox and Italieri were the most common brands . Mostly Napoleonic, WW2, American Civil War era . I always wanted science fiction figures at that age, but there was little to none in 1/72 scale. I guess I have made up for those now! I used to have a load of Zulu Wars and Napoleonics, managed to resist temptation in those eras until Silver Bayonet happened.
I notice you’ve got a bunch of the Perry’s Retreat from Moscow models within your Silver bayonet host. I heartily approve, as I grabbed a bunch of these for SB as well and they look great.
Yes, they were a characterful set, I found it tricky finding personality models for Napoleonics, so these stood out to me. I wish Northstar sold their miniatures individually so I could cherry pick from the faction boxes.
I noticed your avatar as one of the set when I joined OTT a few months back. 🙂
obviously, there is a cost increase but have you seen Brigade’s Sharpe characters?

You’ll have to look through but Duco is there for the French, Munroe, Hogan, Sharpe and his Chosen Men and some civilians as well.
I like Brigade, but the shipping generally deters me, there’s some great WW2 miniatures on there too
There was a brief window this month when Northstar allowed for single finger purchases from the unit sets in the pre-order period of the new expansion. Sadly I think that ended yesterday…
Yeah, the dual pistol wielding Carabiner acts as my French unit captain. It’s a sculpt that immediately grabbed my attention, and pretty much inspired my whole Retreat form Moscow themed Silver Bayonet/historical skirmish game project.
Oh, bollocks.Missed the Northstar thing altogether.
On the plus side, I did discover the Trent range which you can buy through the Skytrex website. There are some fantastic minis there.
I have a special affinity for Skytrex as their bricks and mortar store was in my home town, that’s where I discovered Laserburn and a bunch of other independently published games, Heroes being a particular favourite, a gritty dark ages RPG.
