So I came across  the 3d miniature creator Red Nebular, who make some brilliant retro style sci-fi miniatures. After making a test print of one of his Void Rangers and painting it during the weekend gone by, I took the plunge and joined his patreon. There are some stylish retro sci-fi models inspired by all the well known factions of the Grimdark. The Red Nebular miniatures are truly inspired by and not as close to other Grimdark miniatures. They also have a pulp retro sci-fi look. This inspired me to go back to my painting roots of the early 90s. A time when the grimness of the far future was bright and the colors popped. It was the time of the Grimbright.

The picture doesn’t really do the miniature justice, since it was painted by me and with it being a test model I had to put the supports myself. I over did it and there are some marks in the model based on my inexperience with 3d-printing.

Having researched the painting style of the early and mid 90s the recipe seem to be:

  1. Base color large areas
  2. Edge highlight large areas
  3. Paint details
  4. Base with sand
  5. Paint base Goblin Green
  6. Highlight base
  7. Call it done

I wasn’t any good at edge highlights in the 90s. Still hasn’t become proficient in it now. But this project will give me the oppertunity to practice.
